Crazy that late 30/early 40 types in Scherzer and Verlander are garnering some of the largest annual salaries in league history, while most others that age are riding off into the sunset or hanging on by a thread. Even more impressive that they're doing so as pitchers who have a lot of mileage on their arms.

Cleveland and St. Louis both make sense of the names listed. St. Louis needs their Yadi replacement and Cleveland needs something that will replace probably the worst hitter in baseball in Austin Hedges.

Another name out there that might complicate things for the Jays is Wilson Contreras. Nobody can seem to figure out what the Cubs are doing though, themselves included.

Edit: Holy shit i didn't realize Mike Zunino was that bad last season too. Woof.
Would bet on Cleveland to get Murphy - they talked much of the summer, per media reports out of Cleveland, and were close at the TDL.

Hope this gets things moving.

If the Jays really were in on Verlander, it certainly would’ve impacted the rest of their plans. Maybe we see some moves from them this week.

Rodon apparently looking for 6 years at around 30 mill. If health wasn't an issue I'd do it, but it is so it gives me pause. I really think another top starter is more valuable than anything else we can acquire. A Gausman, Rodon, Manoah, Tiedemann, Berrios rotation would be perfectly balanced (as all things should be).

Im still of the thought that if we upgrade out outfield defense and add another arm (preferably a lefty) to the pen our run prevention should go down enough that we can get by with a non elite SP arm (provided Berrios becomes a mid rotation guy again)

I can get behind Reynolds because yknow live fast die young, that sorta thing, but I doubt the Jays will doll out what the Pirates will end up getting for him.

He is hands down the worst defensive CF in the game and I don't imagine that's a route Atkins will want to go. Spending your prospect bullets on pitching and hoping for the best with Nimmo's injury history seems more their speed.

For what it’s worth, most predictions were bullish – though that optimism matters little until deals are completed. In the meantime, we can still attempt to make sense of near-misses, potential fits and ongoing discussions. On that front, the Toronto Blue Jays’ search for pitching bears watching as the meetings progress.

Before Kyle Gibson agreed to terms with the Baltimore Orioles on a one-year deal, the Blue Jays were involved until the end, according to one source. That's the second time the Blue Jays have pushed to land Gibson, as they also pursued him following the 2019 season only to see him sign in Texas.

This past season, the 35-year-old posted a 5.05 ERA with 144 strikeouts in 167.2 innings with the Philadelphia Phillies – serviceable yet far from overpowering. Of course, shopping for Gibson wouldn’t have cut the Blue Jays off from bigger possibilities, like some high-impact trade candidates or Justin Verlander, who reportedly agreed to terms with the Mets on a two-year, $86 million deal Monday (the Blue Jays have had interest in Verlander in each of the last two winters, but were generally viewed as a longshot to sign the three-time Cy Young winner this time).

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays don’t appear to be a leading suitor for Chris Bassitt at this stage. The right-hander’s likely the top pitcher available beyond Verlander and Carlos Rodon, but he’s seemingly positioned to land a four-year deal at a substantial AAV.

Plus, Bassitt declined a qualifying offer, complicating matters for interested teams. The Blue Jays, for instance, would have to surrender their second-highest 2023 draft pick and have their international signing bonus pool reduced by $500,000 – a significant penalty, though one that can be accounted for.

At the right price, any team would have interest in Bassitt, who posted a 3.42 ERA over the course of 30 starts for the New York Mets last year, and all it takes is one text message for things to change. So far, though, that particular fit doesn’t look to be emerging with the Blue Jays.

One way or another, the Blue Jays intend to add at least one pitcher to the rotation this winter. With Ross Stripling now a free agent, there’s a clear opening behind Kevin Gausman, Alek Manoah and Jose Berrios.

As expected, the Blue Jays have interest in retaining Stripling, but he’ll have plenty of options after posting a 3.01 ERA in 134.1 innings this past season. By way of context, Zach Eflin’s three-year, $40-million deal with the Tampa Bay Rays looks like a reasonable comp for Stripling considering Eflin posted a 4.04 ERA in 75.2 innings with comparable strikeout and walk numbers.

Rodon rightfully trying to cash in after his amazing year in San Francisco. He was relatively healthy last year as well. Bassitt apparently also wants at least 4 years too.

Pitching market didn't have a ton of higher end options to open with and now two of them are spoken for. Not sure i feel comfortable with either. Rodon has made 30+ starts once in his career and hasn't been able to clear 180 IP. Bassitt has a stupidly high groundball rate in an age where the shift is now banned. I can see Bassitt easily getting what he wants but i'm not sure Rodon gets 6. maybe 4 at a higher AAV, but not 6.

Better play might be to settle on a lower tier guy like Jameson Taillon if you really want to make a move at pitching. Or hope Berrios bounces back and direct resources at fixing the hole created in the outfield in the Teoscar trade

Jebuz! 44 mil for a guy who will only impact your season once a week. And he's 40? I mean, I get that you have to pay for starting pitching, but I'm sorry...that's bananas.

That deal is horrendous.

Turner's entire game is based on speed. He's going to be 30 and you just signed him for 11 years. He also can't play defense particularly well as of now, let alone later into the contract. Unreal. It makes sense still since Phillies believes the time is now, but a contract can still be bad even if it makes sense.

People are saying Judge is nuts for asking 8-10 years? If this is any indication, he's very easily going to get it.
