Hasn't pretty much every Guardians pitcher had their arm explode at least once?

So then they're not all going to explode again! It's like... It's slim odds that you ever get struck by lightning and even longer odds that it happens twice, so if you do get struck then obviously you are far less likely to get hit a second time!

It's math! :sarcasm:

We finally get to unleash Nate Pearson. He's literally injured his entire body by now so he's invincible

If he's healthy, this is a big signing.

Building a pen backwards:
Romano
Green
Bass
Swanson
Cimber
Garcia
Mayza/Fry
Pop
Richards
White/Kikuchi

Obviously, we can't keep em all.

Interesting signing with all the righties we have in the pen but i he will likely be put on the 60 day DL to start the season so no impact on the roster.

Green deal is 1 + 3 year club option, where Green has a 1 year player option if the club option is declined per Rosenthal

Another lefty bat!! nice

That's a pretty team friendly structure. I like the signing. Potentially fills the need for a deadline arm without trading assets. Here's hoping between green, romano, bass and Swanson we end up with at least 2 that have big years - that goes a long way to being contenders vs pretenders come October.

And then the Jays get another 2 year option if Green declines his. It's like Russian nesting options.

Jays strategy for pen construction:

Sign 1 guy, maybe injured in the offseason: Yates
Trade for 2 guys at the deadline: Cimber, Richards
Sign 1 guy in the offseason: Garcia
Trade for 2 guys at the deadline: Bass, Pop
Sign 1 guy, maybe injured in the offseason: Green

They also traded for Swanson this offseason. Maybe only 1 pen arm this deadline then

I don't really see how the Jays take that 3rd option. Seems pointless. If they don't want 27/3 why would they want 21/2?

I don't know... if there's still a bit of uncertainty about the elbow next offseason, maybe they would prefer to keep it at a shorter commitment?

I just don't really see how a player is attractive at 2 x 10.5 but too scary to have the 3rd year at 6. If it were something like 3 x 9, or then 2 x 9 I get it. If he were older I could see it I guess. But he'll be 32 when the options are decided on. If you're confident enough in his health to pay 2 years at 10.5 I think a 34 aged year at 6 tacked on the end should make it more attractive.

I highlighted Green back in November. Obviously there’s risk he doesn’t get back to what he was pre-TJS, but it’s also one of the less severe arm injuries to suffer. That fb/sl combo will setup the backend of the bullpen and potentially be that elite level pen acquisition down the 2023 stretch.

I don't really disagree. I guess it could come down to a game of chicken if Green hasn't fully established himself by the end of the year... Jays want him back but think the 3 years is too much, so they decline in hopes that Green picks up his player option. Green thinks he can do better, so he declines, too. Jays still want him back, so they pick up the last option.

I love creative contract/options structure like this, even if there's a pretty narrow band of outcomes that would bring it down to the last option. Chances are he's either good enough that the Jays pick up the first option or bad enough that he wants to pick up his end of it.

I think this is probably the most depth we have had in the pen that I can remember going into a season. There is a real possibility of one of the younger org guys popping in camp as well that could really take the pen up another level.
