I’m sure the Dodgers, their fans and Ohtani don’t give two shits, but judging by the online discourse, he’s gone from universally liked to hated in the span of 3 days.
Fans typically respect when players sign contracts that help the team they’ve spent years with (the reaction wouldn’t be bad if he did this with the LAA), but despise when players jump ship to a new big market franchise while trying to engineer an even bigger financial advantage for said team.
See Kevin Durant pre and post OKC.
The “good for the game” think pieces yesterday didn’t help his case (though those were not his doing).
Like I said, he won’t care, but the majority of NA baseball fans will now be rooting for him to fail.
Also, what’s not yet been reported are the tax implications of this deal. I’m not an accountant, but I’d imagine that Ohtani will change his “residence” to somewhere that’s not California as soon as he retires, and that’s when he’ll start to benefit from the arrangement. So I suspect he’s not leaving all that much money on the table here.
I also bet that the many owners who are the recipients of those luxury tax funds will not be too pleased, so buckle up for the next CBA negotiation.
