We won't get him but I'm happy to raise the bid against the Dodgers.
I totally get the concept, but if the Jays (or whoever) raises the bid, it doesn't matter. The Dodgers are a bottomless pit and have shown tens, if not hundreds, of millions of extra dollars mean nothing.

If they get Yamamoto it's going to be all the more hilarious when Mookie and Freddie go 1/30 in the postseason as they lose in the NLDS again.

Shohei about to learn the meaning of "same shit, different day"

Well at least he’ll get a taste of postseason baseball.

To be willing to defer 680 million dollars… What playing for the Angels does to a guy.

FYI to everyone. I expect this deferred money is all about about taxes too.

For athletes yearly salary paid equally over the 10 years you pay taxes in every city you play in, not your home state (although 50% of the games will be).... So would be California tax for $35m and $35m spread out.

If you get the lump sum per year like he will in 2034 - 44 you pay tax where ever you are living at the time of payment. So you can manipulate that to pay less taxes.

It's the exact same thing that the Leafs do with the heavy salary bonus structured deals. Matthews can be in Arizona and pay Arizona taxes because they pay him it all on July 1. Not all NHL teams can afford to do that.

That Dragons Den Private Jet Guy talked about it on Overdrive today.

It's honestly pretty admirable (or as admirable as receiving a bank vault full of money slowly rather than right now can be) he was willing to do that.

sets his family tree up for numerous generations and given the alleged $40 million he made off of endorsements last year between being a face for New Balance and stuff back home i presume, he's probably sitting pretty anyways.

If you were to take endorsements into account for salary, Ohtani is probably still among the league's highest earning players even with the paltry 2 million dollar salary charge.

I'm sure his agent and professional advisors structured this in the most tax advantageous way as possible in the circumstances, just as every player does. The difference is that this guy had all of the leverage in the world to dictate his payment terms, so I'm sure they have structured this in a way that sees him and his estate take home the most after-tax dollars possible.

My point is that people are reading in too much about the "took less money now so Dodgers can compete" angle.... No, he, and 1000 of athletes before and after do the exact same for tax reasons. Just no one cares about their contracts like we do with his.

I think JD has one more good year in him. He can still punish fastballs and the Jays should have guys on for him.

I would overpay for one year to get him.
You realize he hit .152 last year, right? He looks cooked.

The last couple years have been bad for his clubhouse reputation too. It’s really unlikely he gets another shot, especially with us.

Absolutely right. I don't think this has anything to do with helping the Dodgers compete. It was no doubt all about maximizing the take-home dollars under the contract, and good for him for doing so.

Even if that Ohtani contract is "unethical," that is also just the nature of the never ending game of cat and mouse played between the the various league offices in sports and the teams looking for even the smallest loophole they can find to give themselves a leg up.

Look at the NHL; When the cap was first introduced, it took a while for GMs to find a way around it. That way eventually appeared in the form of making hilariously long contracts to keep the yearly cap hit down. The league didn't like that so they changed the way contracts could be written (term limits, penalties on 35+ contracts, etc)

When that went away, the next loophole appeared in the form of LTIR. Guy gets hurt? Aw shucks he's out for the year guess we'll use his cap allocation to go replace him...oh hey look he's back in time for game 1 of the playoffs!

Shit even football with its non-guaranteed deals have weird shenanigans with cap circumvention given you can convert raw cap hit to signing bonuses.

so he is only getting paid $2M/year?

I keep reading on here how our kids NEED $10M+ a year.

NEED IT.

I guess I'm just confused.
lol no he's getting $2m for 10 years and then 68m a year for 10 years after that but nice try

this move actually allows him to make more money as he no longer has to worry about tax in California and can avoid taxation on $680 million

You are leaving out the part where he has 680 million coming though. Like that is a pretty large part to the story....which again is not allowed in hockey lol he didn't just sign for 2 million over 10 years and that's it.
that $680m is also tax deferred meaning he won't be paying California taxes on it
