Thing with re-signing Ryu is he is a starter. He takes a long time to get warmed up so the bullpen is probably out of the question for him if Manoah regains form.

That's why I'd like to get Lugo if it's under 3 years. More versatile than Ryu as he can shift to the pen if necessary. However, you'd like for him to be in the rotation full-time to maximize the value

Sounds like there is a ton of interest from the crappy teams in the Central, so I doubt we'll be able to get him. He is guaranteed to stay in their rotation and can probably get more than 2 years

With the Padres looking to apparently offload money... what about Machado? (I've yet to look at his contract as I post this)

I guess Ohtani doesn’t need a NTC or NMC, as that contract is pretty much non tradable, lol.

I was expecting the deferral to be spread out longer

That seems incredibly dumb to me. He's losing so much money by deferring and not earning interest on that up front money. He comes out way ahead on 500 million over 10 years that's just a straight 50 million per year. But then he still needed 700 million to sign so it's not like "it's not about the money"

It's actually genius on his part. He makes $50 million+ a year from endorsements. So why not defer that money until your career is over and your endorsements disappear.

Because you could just take that 50 million and invest it and in 10 years with even a conservative growth that 50 million is now 70 million. And that's just one years salary.

Watch, by the end of it, those 680mil will become shares of the Dodgers and Ohtani will be a minor owner. At this rate, it might be 8-15% of ownership depending on how much Dodgers can increase their value in 10 yrs as they are about 4.8billion now.

He makes 50m annually from off-field endorsement. He's on a whole another planet compare to any hockey player when it comes to money printing ability. He is Gretzky in Japan, even your 90 years old grandma knows him

some people put their team and their team success ahead of their own personal richness.

i get that the concept is foreign around here.
Your lack of understanding on most subjects is impressive. Perhaps learn about what you are posting before posting.

Reading complete articles and understanfing what you are reading is an important skillet.

He could borrow against those future earnings and get a tax discount on the interest.

A $250 million dollar deal for Bellinger would make a little more sense if we could reduce his CBT hit to like $17.5m with deferred payments.

You know it is also literally not possible to do the same thing in hockey lol
i'm not speaking of the ability to defer. I'm speaking on the ability to manage on $2M/year.

trust me kb, with how predictable your likes are on various subjects, i'm more than familiar with your understanfing skillet.

he makes more than our big 4 combined salary in endorsements every year.

Also what are we doing comparing baseball contracts to hockey contracts??? JFC

Mlb needs a cap in the worst way. That ohtani deffered money is a joke. Players will never agree though. Paying a guy 2mil a year and then paying the rest long after he retire is circumventing the tax system whether the league says its legal or not.
They need a stricter luxury tax and a floor as well. Can't have teams with a payroll so low.

Ohtani is not "managing" 2 million a year lol he makes like 50 million a year outside of baseball. He could volunteer his time to baseball and still be generationally wealthy.
yes, many athletes make money outside of their sport.

that isn't unique.

taking a $2m annual salary is. (and why it's such a big story)
