So many f***ing snowflakes in here. If there's anything worse than people complaining, it's the holier than thou idiots constantly complaining about complaining. Stop post-policing people because you can't handle negative emotions. Go light a lavender candle and see a serenity guru.

It’s not just marketability but also an economic impact for the city. From tourism to job market (Japanese journalists) the City of Los Angeles managed to retain a boom. It might also push approval for the gondola access to Dodger stadium.

In the aftermath, a middle-of-the-order bat to better support Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Bo Bichette remains a primary need, with holes in the infield, covered ideally by a third baseman, and the outfield to plug.

Short-term options like Rhys Hoskins and J.D. Martinez make sense as primary DHs, they could re-engage more aggressively on Matt Chapman to cover third, they’re involved on Isiah Kiner-Falefa, while their every-time-available interest in Joc Pederson and Michael Brantley, to some degree, remains.

They could also get creative, pursuing the highly coveted right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto to add more impact to an already full rotation while using a surplus starter, Alek Manoah perhaps, to acquire offence via trade.

Many options will be shorter-term adds that won’t necessarily extend the current competitive window, which is under threat from the pending free agencies of Guerrero and Bichette, among others, at the end of the 2025 season.

It’s also unclear how losing out on Ohtani and perhaps shifting to less marquee options will impact sales of the club’s new premium seating, a focal point of the current phase of a $300-plus-million Rogers Centre renovation.

Yes but

He's bringing all this prosperity, but can Shohei tell me why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

Didn't think so. Bust tbh.

"He values his privacy!"

The attempt at signing Ohtani is the acquisition. Watch how often management and their media shills mention it until April.

They were in on Bauer and Realmuto before signing Springer.

They were in on Seager and Freeman despite already signing Gausman.

They were in on Bogaerts and Verlander last year then got Bassitt, traded for Varsho, then signed Kiermaier, and Belt.

Is there any other player in this free agency class that they should sign to a big contract? Not sure Bellinger or Chapman are necessary when there are more marquee names to pitch to next offseason.

I legit think the Jay's mightve dodged a bullet here. He's 30 years old already and coming off Tommy John surgery and won't be pitching this year. How confident are you that you'd get even 3 or 4 years of him being an elite pitcher and hitter?

Ohtani had incredible hitting numbers last year but that was by far his best season and his numbers have fluctuated quite a bit throughout his career. It's possible that there could be seasons where the Dodgers are paying him 70 mil just to hit and put up an OPS of 870.

He's 29 and won't be 30 until next summer.

Ya. LA really f***ed up signing him.

Glad the Jays dodged him

The contract numbers they were throwing around never made sense from a baseball perspective.

Can’t imagine the Dodgers care about overpaying since they pencilled in this offseason since he signed with the Angels. They wanted him and were prepared to do whatever it takes to get him. They have Freeman/Betts/Ohtani for 4 more years, the latter two for an eternity. Now they just need to buy a rotation.

FFS $700 million is a huge steer clear. Imagine if he can't pitch again after his Tommy John surgery? That would be........hilarious!

It would mean the Dodgers will be paying $70 million/season to replace J D Martinez, who missed 49 games and still posted 33 HR and 103 RBI, along with a near .900 OPS.

All for $10 million/season.

If he's still pitching full-time by the end of the deal I'll be shocked.

He will start pitching in 2025. He will focus on batting next season until his elbow heals completely.

I'm not disappointed that the Jays didn't sign Ohtani.

I'd rather they spread the money throughout the lineup.

I'm also doubtful that a 29 y.o. player coming off a second Tommy John surgery is going to be as good as new.

There's a lot of risk in that contract, and I'm glad its on the Dodgers not the Jays.

Los Angeles is the best place for Japanese players who wants to play in the majors.
Remember Hideo Nomo ? Hiroki Kuroda ? Yu Darvish ?
LA has a huge Japanese community. His translator is also from the area.

I do think because of his marketability, the threshold of what is a "good deal" is for Ohtani is much, much different than your average big ticket signing like an Aaron Judge for example.

That number they gave him is ludicrous but there's a pretty good chance the Dodgers still profit off of it which i would say makes it a great deal since it's bringing them a better chance to win on and off the field.
I agree. And I think that Ohtani is one of those true Generational players where even if he retires, he will still be extremely marketable like Beckham in football, Serena in Tennis, Jordan in Basketball and McGregor in MMA.
