OEL is very over rated on HF Boards.

So your saying that playing on a bad team will make him have a horrible season? Color me surprise. This guy has the potential to be a top 8 defenseman in the league. He is also better than any defenseman the leafs have..

He may not be elite but he's good enough to score short-handed on a goalie from his def blueline. His team has the second worst goal differential in the whole league, which affects his +/- numbers.

Well, I'm sure he can thank Mr. Smith for his +/- this year. I've seen the kid enough to know he's a #1D and he's going to get better every season now. He's not elite yet IMO (like saying he's a top 10 D in the league), but he is only 23 and very likely will get there. That's as good as being elite already as far as trades go because he's also locked up long term.

Every thread like this just shows the player in question is actually underrated on here. Funny how that works out.

...OEL is easily in the Top 20 for Dmen in the entire League, has been for some time, and is 23...the only Dman mentioned in this thread that's being ridiculously overrated by the select few usual suspects is Cody Franson, who apparently is now a Top Pairing Dman, yet Leaf fans can't wait to trade him before the deadline...

Before this season, they wanted to throw him away for ANYTHING.

Never thought I'd see the day people would compare Cody ****in' Franson with OEL. Still not sure if it's because one is extremely overrated or the other underrated.

Is he still leading the entire league in game winning goals this year?

Trade his overrated ass before he completely screws up the tank.

He's tied with Ovechkin and Beleskey for first. The only defenseman in the top 20 in GWG.

The OP is extremely obsessed with Franson for some reason. Trust me, he has been good this year, but many of our fan base want him gone. You can't rely on him to be a first pairing defenseman and expect to win. He would be a very good #4 or #5 on a contending team.

My god this board has gone nuts over OEL.

Half desperately trying to get him and another angrier half saying he's overrated.

Jeez.

Why I am not surprised at this thread? OEL is overrated, Why was Richards waved and Brown was not blah blah blah. I advise you to watch players play and you will know.

OEL's having a weak year and wasn't at his best last year, but he's still an excellent talent who has already performed at an extremely high level in his young career. If he just got back to what he's already shown he returns to that elite tier as one of the league's top 15 Dman.

I think you cannot judge a player in a vacuum. Is OEL elite? Not yet, but he is very good. He is still very obviously developing and refining his play. Once he matures he may very well be considered elite. Very few D-men can actually come into the league and dominate at an early age - Doughty being somewhat of an outlier.

OEL will in all probability not hit his prime for a few years. He is signed to a very, very good contract for what he is, a solid mid level #1D. A GM (and possibly fans) will look at current play, age, potential and cap hit as a package. Imagine having a #1D for a further four years after this season at a 5.5 million cap hit. Meaning among other things that the GM can go out and load up on more players for a run at the cup. OEL also fills a need on a majority of teams which makes him more valuable depending on team need and cap space.

So, no I'd say he's pretty much valued the way he should be - but I will very much argue that he is better than Cody Franson, and I bet so would a majority of Leaf fans.

:help: He was on Sweden's Olympic team.

Well... sort of. On paper he was, but he was clearly not MÃ¥rt's favorite.
But what do you expect with the selection he made. He left out both Hedman & Brodin and instead put in stars like Odoya, Ericsson & Tallinder. Amazing we still made it to the final. (And without Zetterberg aswell)

That's cool that you use points and plus minus to make your judgement. No wonder Leafs fans hype Franson up.....OEL is a stud and I'd kill for him on my team. Just watch, you'll see in the next couple years.

And let's not forget about the immortal Mark Fraser...

He was tied for 3rd in NHL dmen at +18 in 2012-13 while playing for the Leafs.

Ryan just made OEL look silly. It's not like Ryan was doing anything special, just skated and protected the puck.

If Ekman-Larsson played in the East he would consistently be in the same conversation as players like Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Subban, etc.
