Hope the A's set record lows in attendance for the remainder of their time in Oakland.

Oakland fans have had a rough decade. Two teams bolted to Vegas while a third, their absolute best fresh off a dynasty, jumped across the bay to San Francisco.

They will, and MLB will have to decide if that’s what’s best

I can only hope that Oakland puts the screws to situation. Make the A's stay put as long as possible to as little revenue as possible, jack up municipal costs to them if possible, and/or coerce a fat payday from the team and/or league to allow them to leave earlier than mandatory.

Who cares if the divorce is ugly? Not like the MLB is going to sniff around Oakland ever again. Get your last bag while you can.

self inflicted

I can respect the stance of not catering to billionaires about stadiums but this is the consequence of it

Not self-inflicted at all. Raiders and Warriors fans always showed up and their teams still moved. A's spent the better part of a decade all but saying that Oakland sucked and were open about their efforts to move, even if originally planning to move nearby before the Giants twirled their cartoonishly evil mustaches and blocked that. Couple that with the city itself being in deep financial despair and flat out not being able to afford a major concession to a baseball team, and I don't see how you could blame Oakland fans.

Oh, A's fans weren't showing up when the team was cheap, the stadium was a dump, and their owners were actively and openly courting relocation options? ... yeah, why would fans show up?

fisher sabotaged the team these last few years and allowed the coliseum to fall further into disrepair in an attempt to justify the move. all while MLB just sat back and enjoyed the show because they wanted the A's out of oakland. f***ing insane and never seen anything like it in pro sports

and it's absolutely mindblowing how the "well if only A's fans showed up then this wouldn't have happened" narrative still continues. why would fans show up to watch a team in a shithole stadium that you know will get blown up after a few years because the owner is a cheap piece of shit who doesn't care about winning?

or if Oakland didnt jerk around 3 different owners over 30 years with regards to a new stadium then they wouldn't have lost them

the city of oakland hasn't been perfect throughout all this, but to blame this all on them? that's bold. i get you're from vegas and obviously want the team there, but how exactly have they "jerked around" 3 different owners in 30 years? hell, the A's didn't even "commit" to oakland until fairly recently and that was after their searches for a new stadium in places like fremont and san jose came up short. the howard terminal project could have easily happened, but MLB was never going to allow the A's to stay in oakland. so how is that on the city?

the A's and MLB were the ones jerking around the city of oakland here actually

F*** John Fisher. F*** Manfred. F*** the other owners. Particularly F*** the Giants. And F*** Vegas.

The idea that this is the fans' fault is ridiculous, but I'll have more to say on that once I've come down from the anger and sadness even though this isn't a surprise. Despite those feelings, it's not over until they actually leave.

As a potential Free Agent Fan, I'm considering Minnesota, Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh. All are aggrieved small market brethren with fleeting moments of success along the way that my team has no real rivalry with in my lifetime. Any recommendations/signing bonuses are appreciated.

A lot of this is similar to the Rams in St. Louis (not here to argue that rams were originally from LA blah blah blah).

Absolutely feel for Oakland fans

Yep...Don't know a ton about what led to this, and I know very little about the city of Oakland. What I DO know is that losing a team is awful.

Sorry, fans.

What a dark week for baseball. The same week Peter Seidler dies, John Fisher rears his vileness. Seidler was a breath of fresh air as an owner in contrast to the cheap for profit bottom line ones, in which Fisher was arguably the worst. Castellini, Nutting, and Sternberg are also in this group. In fact, I would rate Fisher as the worst.

Oakland simply isn't viable or sustainable for a mega business like a pro sports team. It's in the pudding. They are the only city to lose a sports team in every major pro sport. This was a foregone conclusion, i'm surprised it took this long.

The city and surrounding areas have been on a decline for years and it's rapidly getting worse. A lot of average people wouldn't feel safe walking around most areas during the day.

And there's too much competition with San Fransisco market. I can't think of one notable business entity headquaratered in Oakland

It sucks for local diehards but I can't get behind the evil greedy billionaire narrative. They had to move

if we're going by cities that people wouldn't feel safe walking around, then there are a handful of other cities who also don't deserve pro teams then

Sad day, grew up with the Oakland A's but moving them to Vegas does what?
Fisher was a bad owner in Oakland and he will be horrible in Vegas, he'll sell that team to the highest bidder.

Moves them to a viable sports market

Oakland on different level right now. Small market, economic crisisunsafe city. People don’t wanna go there or do business there. It’s continuing to decline

Building a new stadium there or in the area isn’t going to magically fix their problems.
A pro baseball team can’t salvage the city

economic crisis is not just limited to the city of oakland. same with crime

there are a number of other major cities with pro teams that are suffering from the same issues that oakland is in regards to the economy and crime. oakland is certainly not on a '"different level" than other places
