Stadium to open in 2028. $175m committed to infrastructure for both stadium and new Trop. Still waiting on MLB relocation approval.

The one law I like in California is their stance on giving billionaires money to build stadiums.

I mean, I agree with not giving owners any public money whatsoever, but...
the Chargers left San Diego
the Rams left Anaheim
the Raiders left Oakland, Los Angeles, Oakland Again
the Warriors left Oakland
the Kings almost left Sacramento
the Giants almost left San Francisco
the A's are about to leave Oakland

The Warriors left Oakland for San Francisco. Which is where they wanted to be all along. That one doesn't really count. They never moved markets.

And the chargers left San Diego for Los Angeles. They didn't leave the state. And Spanos had delusions about the popularity of the team in LA. Plus the demands in San Diego for a new stadium were stupid and likely intentionally so to give him an excuse to move to LA. Rejecting a proposal for a new stadium at the same Mission Valley site where the team had played for decades, a location that is well suited for football, was stupid. There's no reason Snapdragon Stadium couldn't have been built for the Chargers as well.

My point is that it's SMART for the cities to not give billionaire free stadiums, but that doesn't make your team leaving suck any less.

This isn't either/or. I think the "hot take" culture of sports talk has turned everything into a binary debate. Real life is a million shades of gray:

Is it stupid to spend city dollars to build a stadium-- for a dick -- to keep the A's in Oakland? Yes.

Do the people of Oakland WANT the A's to play in a nice stadium in Oakland? Also yes.

Is it stupid for the owner to stay in Oakland if Las Vegas will build you a stadium and Oakland won't? Also yes.

A's shift blame. Paywall

It's a tough situation because obviously as a sports fan, you don't want cities losing teams; and you want the owners to be committed to the community, and you want a good partnership between team and community.

So I both agree that Oakland politicians failed miserably in taking care of the A's.
AND that the A's ownership is a bunch of jerks.
AND that previous A's ownership stayed in the Coliseum a crazy long time.
AND that the team is smart/justified to bolt for Oakland.
AND that the A's fans and Oakland don't deserve to lose their team
AND that the A's leaving for Vegas is really bad for baseball.

And of course, the Giants are jerks for not letting the A's build in San Jose, which would have solved everything and been better for baseball.

Nevada teachers union/PAC challenging public funding.

Claiming A's will spend more after move
Fisher never met a dollar he didn't want to hoard.

He'll sell the team before he spends on them.
