Post-Game Talk: NYR @ WSH Game I: An Implosion Of Modest Proportions

I miss Staal so bad. Still wearing his jersey to every game (and I have many others)

I'm a bit saddened how underrated he is by some people here

Judging from the fan feedback after every. single. game. you'd think he was hockey jesus

True, but the Asham call was bogus, and the resulting PP turned the game around. Can't talk about the game w/o mentioning that.

I'm not saying the reffing was bad, all I'm saying is that if that's the case, the team needs to pull up their bootstraps and over come it.

But what does it matter? They know they lost before the 2nd period was over.

Some team.

It rolled into Holtby's hockey pants.

The puck never entered the frame on the only net cam they showed on NBCSN.

TV replays may not have shown the puck but I feel it was in the net because Holtbys body and glove were both in the net.

Was it? MSG didn't show anything other than the original one which clearly looked like a trip and a bunch of the beat writers were saying it was a bad no call. If not, then I guess the refs made a good non-call there but regardless it doesn't change the fact of the Asham penalty.

Also is there any use at all for our 4th line other than taking penalties? Honestly, we should just play with 3 lines. The 4th line only plays 4-5 minutes a game anyway so that could be dispersed to the other guys and only add like a minute or so each. Whether it's Gilroy, Asham, or anyone else they are incapable of scoring and just end up taking penalties.

It was a good hockey play for sure. I don't remember which, but either Edzo or Pierre called it right when they said that Stralman HAS to get rid of the puck in that situation and the problem stemmed from the fact that he didn't. Spot on analysis. By the way, Stralman had an AWFUL game.

Our 4th line looked good on most of their shifts.

Careful of what you say...dpon't wanna be imffracted for hopes of injury etc...

But yeah.... man up players.. I hate blaming refs but they were sketchy tonight

I'm not hoping for injuries.

You run a goalie to get him off his game. Similar to what Avery used to do to Brodeur.

Making a guy "eat a stick" isn't wishing injury, it's making him realize that you're not going to put up with his bull**** anymore.

Textbook how to beat yourself hockey.

"we want to stay disciplined and stay out of the box" <<< LOL That worked out for thirty seconds.

Score on that 5 on 3 and it's a completely different game. Hagelin cashes in on that breakaway? Completely different game.

That third goal though was as back breaking as they come by Lundqvist. You knew after that the game was over. Was nice to watch McD and Girardi continue to have their heads up their ***es.

Hope to see Staal back in game 2. We need one in Washington.

agree with every word. Why can't we just run over them after Haggs scores? Looked like we tried to ride a 1-0 lead, and thats not going to be a winning formula against this Capitals team.

Caps looked like a perfumed pimped not-so-good-looking girl you end up with only if everything else fails. Just man up and win this series god dammit.

In regardas to the wrong players being used on the powerplay.

Girardi wears an 'A' (albeit temporarily), he has power, and when he needs to use it, he should.
I wore the captains armband before (soccer), and when something isn't going right, it's up to you to fix it. If you, the player, recognizes that something the coach is doing is clearly wrong, you have the power to fix it. I don't expect it to happen, but what Girardi has to do, is tell Tortorella that he won't play on the powerplay. He has to recognize to problem, and if the coach doesn't, he has to take the matter of fixing it into his own hands.

its the playoffs...stats mean nothing, anything that has happened before the playoffs mean nothing....its a new season, you look towards game 2

What? Assuming the number he stated is correct it means exactly what it says. Throughout history of the playoffs the team that has won the first game has won 68% of the time. This actually does have a decent enough sample size to have some meaning (15 game ones per year). Obviously it's an average and will change dependent on the matchup but the point stands.

Same old...Holtby activates God mode vs the Rangers in the playoffs and the Rangers are unable to score. Frustrating. Scored more than 3 goals ONCE last year in the playoffs...Nash and co. need to step up.

Felt Nash was trying a little too hard tonight. He was shooting it into guys skates all over the place.

You can't force a shot that just isn't there.

The officiating is part of the game and should be able to be fairly criticized as well as any other part of it. They missed/blew some calls. It happens. It happened to hurt us tonight. Long run it should even out and happen the same to everyone. Saying that it didn't hurt us tonight though is just neglecting an important fact of the game. Obviously we needed to score more goals and convert on powerplays but all of those things were important in the game. Not just one or the other.

#NYR General consensus in Rangers room? That four-min span in which NYR failed to convert on 5-on-3 then surrendered 2 goals was the game

Even THEY knew it was over after they gave up those 2 goals!

So they're a bunch of sad little losers that gave up, after going down by two goals, with half the game still to go? They deserve to get swept. Pathetic. Low morale leads to this kind of stuf. There are still internal problems, the cause being unknown.

The rest of these guys need to look up to Brad Richards. He realized he was playing like crap. He got mad at no one but himself, he worked hard, and he started producing again.

Some points

Moores "goal " seemed inconclusive but almost certainly in. cannot go againdt the rules - no goal. Thought Moore played well
Ashams penalty was a total hose job. Huge miss by the refs. Asham played well in limited time too.
Nash did not look worthy of the huge bounty we gave up. Perimeter shots yes.
Callahan, Zuccarello and McD did not look that great either
I actually thought Richards looked OK. Along with Girardi and Stralman too
Hank cannot let in a goal like this. Although Snowblind is ranting way out of control with total dellusions and iffy personal issues - he is right about the fact that the 3rd goal is totally inexcusable in a game like this.
Tortorella is the best PP coach in the league. Doubtlessly. And an offensive mastermind when down by a goal or two. The tactics he employs in these 2 fields where he has excelled for years would marvel Merlin into submission and surrender. He is such a great coach
Kreider had an allright game for being Kreider this year. That being said, he does not belong on this roster at this point...
Hagelin was by far the best Ranger, HM to Stepan.

No, not "so" that at all. You made up that entire narrative. In hindsight, that was when the game was lost. Anyone could and should have seen that.

We know the cause.

"We don't practice offense"

leadership issue.

Everything that could've went wrong did in that second period did go wrong.

-Danny G and McD looked awful
-In fact, most of the D looked awful.
-Hank was beyond human (that third goal...oh man.)
-Nash was clearly not on his game.
-Richie looked like he did earlier in the year
-Flower Play made its triumphant return
