Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

Why should Leafs fans care about Marner scoring a goal for any team other than the Leafs.

Leafs fans are fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Not necessarily a fan of team Canada at the wannabe Olympics. Furthermore being a fan of the team doesn't have to mean being a fan of the player.

It's entirely possible to distinguish the two.

There are lots of people who are fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs who aren't fans of Mitch Marner. It isn't a requirement to like the players to like the team. Some fans prefer to cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey instead of the name on the back.

It's sad Leafs fans are expected to celebrate this goal instead of any that Marner has scored for the Leafs in a big game.

Too many fans have way too much emotional attachment to this group of chronically under-performing players. If it makes them feel any better... congratulations Mitch Marner. You scored a goal that won a meaningless game in a meaningless tournament.

Now let's see you do it in the playoffs when it really matters.
I couldn't be more opposite of you. Team Canada is my #1 team and the Leafs #2. Why wouldn't you be both if you're a Canadian? Furthermore, don't you see how it could benefit the Leafs if Marner succeeds at the tourney?

Nice goal by Marner, but let’s not pretend this is some heroic feat. The guy was invisible, hard a hard time with the pace of the game. It was 3 on 3 ffs, that’s pond hockey. We can only hope it does something for his confidence going forward.

Mitch did what MacKinnon could not do in OT but Mitch needs to be better in regulation. He's had one game to adjust playing with 97. Big test Saturday to see if he and Reinhart learned anything last night.

I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way you do.

I'll cheer for team Canada at the Olympics. I don't care for this tournament though. Other than maybe a short term slight confidence boost I don't really see how any success Marner has here will carry over to his play with the Leafs.

If that's the case then the same could be said for everyone else in the tournament too.

Happy he scored the GWG; this should have zero bearing on his contract. I mean that sincerely.
Dominating in regulation would be more impressive. Everybody knows Mitch is really good when he has lots of time and space. Unfortunately for the 3 amigos there are no 3 on 3 gimmicks in the playoffs.

He showed last night that he is not in the class of 29, 97 and 87. As did Willie but he is not asking for Draisaitl money.

Not what I saw. I literally said to my buddy halfway through the game Marner doesn't look out of place on that line.

Exactly. It was so obvious and great to see first hand. If I had to pick paying 13m for 1 year of service. Give me Crosby. I think we would go a lot further.

If there was a trade right now on the table. Sid for Marner before the deadline where it's understood Sid will sign here for 2 years and we were never going to pull the trigger on 13m Mitch.

Done deal sign that trade all day long

This describes pretty well how I feel. Marner scored a nice goal, great. Do I care?

No. This tournament is a joke, and non-contact 3on3 OT hockey has nothing to do with how playoff hockey is played. Mitch disappears after 86 games so ... get back to me when Mitch plays consistently like a super star after 86 games because until that happens, he's still the same overpaid regular season wonderboy who plays like a wuss when the real games start.

Jon Cooper agrees, leave the ankle biters to their internal sadness. I'm getting a hoot out of it. Didn't watch the game, invisible, bad goal, nothing tournament, Crosby did all the work, it's funny. There's a reason the real world ignores people, this place is an illusion.

Looking forward to game against US, with all the tariff stuff and it being flag day in Canada, will be spicy in Montreal.

Like a bunch of players in this game, he got better as the game went on.
Yep slow start, thought he was great in the third.

I really hope there's no booing. The anthem has nothing to do with politics and the players have nothing to do with tariffs.

I don't love the fit with Marner & McDavid. I like Marner with guys like Point, Stone, Tavares and even Crosby. Guys not reliant on speed like McDavid. Tbh, like I said before, McDavid is a unicorn and I honestly don't know who he would be best with. Marner is a beauty but not sure he's best utilised with McDavid for Team Canada. With that being said, Cooper LOVES Marner and I trust his judgement more than possibly any other coach out there. If he's going to be with McDavid he'll need more than one game to adapt to the player he is. He will get there though.

Marner had a few looks with McDavid where he made a smart little small area play and nifty give and go but McDavid also has that puck hog mentality where he’s going to take the puck in deep at speed and not sure if Marner is going to go there with him. Not a lot of chemistry but that’s to be expected.

Almost a ppg in the last 3 but .5 ppg in the last two (2G 4A in 12 games)..

You need 3 data points to establish a trend. 1 or 2 years is a pointless comparison.

Players do not speak ill towards other players unless they are scrubs.

Coaches do not speak ill about other teams or players because they may one day be employed by them or have to coach them.

Coaches are aware of public perception of a player. The coach will appease and if it is beneficial to compliment even deceive if need be.

A coach or organization could pump someone's tires in the hopes that the rival team overspends and hurts their competitive edge.

Managers do not comment on other players generally speaking.

Don't take the wrong way but I think you are just a little wet behind the ears with how the games are played off the ice.

LOL, a little wet behind the ears with how games are played off the field? Oh do tell what is your experience in the NHL board room besides making up silly conspiracy theory's that assuage your creative imagination?

No I read about. Go check out some Ex GM books

3 points in 7 games last year. Held pointless in 3 of 5 against Florida. 3 points 5 games. Had a good series against Tampa but there was no defensive played in that series. Held pointless in 8 of 18 games.

Theres a few ways to look at that. When you look at the 11 points in the Tampa series then 6 points in the next 12 games that’s a tough.

So if we take away the good and only leave the bad, Marner is a bad player? That is some MIT logic right tehre? If you use the take away the good but leave the bad for MacKinnon and McDavid how do they look?
