Offense has dragged the Rangers kicking and screaming to the playoffs in two consecutive years and looks even better this year. How big does the sample have to be?

Howbout a tangible amount more than 6 games? Howbout 20-30? This season hasn't gone the full length of a playoff series yet.

It doesn't matter what any team has done X # of years in a row. Personnel changes. Pittsburgh is currently 29th in the league in scoring. Does anyone think they'll finish down there? Washington is 24th.

A strong start is no guarantee of a strong finish.

Pittsburgh won the Cup with three top 4 defenseman, and a bunch of bottom pairing defenseman.

I'd like to add a top 4 defenseman, but I think we have a good enough defense. People exaggerate how bad our defense is. The way our players are playing, we have a top 10 defense in the league, and even last season when our defense was very bad, we were still 15th, so it wasn't as bad as some people think.

They also had Letang. There are quite many bluelines I'd take over Rangers for playoffs.
Pens also had Crosby, Malkin and Kessell.

I wouldn't use Pittsburgh as an example for Rangers.

I'd be happy with this lineup:
McD-Klein
Staal-Clendening
Skjei-Girardi

Not ideal, but solid enough that the forwards can mask the serious issues (Girardi).

Send Holden to Hartford, McIlrath as the 7th or flipped for picks.

Unless a team is good enough to compete for the Cup, this really isn't the year to invest in extra defencemen considering the upcoming expansion draft.

I'm sure if they're looking to upgrade the defense, they're not worried about protecting them in the expansion draft.

Is 170 enough? Because that's how many games the Rangers have had an offense near the top of the league for.

Okay, in the entire NHL they were 7th last year and 3rd the year before that. They have one of the youngest forward groups in NHL, so it should be expected for them to continue that pace and possibly improve upon it. 6 games and they are Top 5. Sooooo????

Rumor mill must be soft for LeBrun to be throwing spaghetti at the wall like this.

The defense is really in need of a skater or two. A reliable two-way guy that can skate.

The Rangers look like the better team, but the blueline is getting too old and too slow.... although the team's made systemic changes to get much quicker as a team....

They have a zone exit philosophy that's done a good job of masking some defeciences...

The team ideally still needs two good skater and puck movers.

I think they go after younger guys like Kukan or R. Murphy; and swing for a bridge player like Bieksa or an attainable piece like a Sustr or a Marchenko.

No, it is not.

Yeah. It really is. Until Lundqvist consistently plays poorly, he is still a top 5 goaltender. Raanta is a great back up

We were one of the best 5 on 5 teams last year scoring goals and right now we are 1st in the NHL in goals.

Is 170 enough? Because that's how many games the Rangers have had an offense near the top of the league for.

And 6 games in we are right back near the top.

Wouldn't it be wiser for NYR to wait until he is a UFA at the end of the year.

Wouldn't NYR be considered a top contender for him considering he wants to come out East as is from Connecticut?

Why give up futures?

Rangers won't go HAM for Shattenkirk being a FA. If they trade for a D it will most likely be a guy like Trouba.

It doesn't make sense to trade for Shattenkirk unless it is something around Nash (which STL doesn't want). The only way a trade makes sense is if we trade for a young defenseman.

Anything they can do and there's nothing they can do are the same thing except one makes it sound like there is something to read about while the other doesn't. This is the hockey writer's version of, "if there's something there that makes sense and will improve our team, we will do it" from a gm. Meaning there's nothing there and we are done.

I still think Shattenkirk will be a Ranger before the end of this season. The question then becomes, what do the Blues get back? Which has already been discussed into the ground multiple times.
