OR

Hags, Stepan, Nash
Kreider, Richards, St.Louis

Don't like option #1. Nash and Kreider can both play either wing, but seems like they prefer RW and LW respectively.

yup, you got it right. Richards and MSL line need grit and Kreider brings that.

No. I'd rather trade Callahan for someone who could help this team for more than 2-3 seasons.

What makes you think he's worth that? Teams now how crazy his demands are so he's basically a rental.

Amazing how many people don't get it.

I would give up a 1st just to NOT have to pay him that contract. We get an ELITE player back.

HUGE win for us.

For everyone complaining about the draft picks. Here is a list of all the Rangers first round draft picks since 1989.

Year Name Games Played (Season/POs)
1989 Steve Rice 329/2
1990 Michael Stewart 0/0
1991 Alexei Kovalev 1316/123
1992 Peter Ferraro 92/2
1993 Niklas Sundstrom 750/59
1994 Dan Cloutier 351/25
1996 Jeff Brown 0/0
1997 Stefan Cherneski 0/0
1998 Manny Malhotra 914/35
1999 Pavel Brendl 78/2
1999 Jamie Lundmark 295/6
2001 Dan Blackburn 63/0
2003 Hugh Jessiman 2/0
2004 Al Montoya 81/0
2004 Lauri Korpikoski 382/30
2005 Marc Staal 440/43
2006 Bob Sanguinetti 5/0
2007 Alexei Cherepanov 0/0
2008 Michael Del Zotto 303/32
2009 Chris Kreider 78/26
2010 Dylan McIlrath 2/0
2011 J.T. Miller 54/0
2012 Brady Skjei 0/0

1.) Of those 22 picks, 7 of them did not play a single regular season game with the Rangers (not including Brady Skjei)

2.) I would say only 2 performed/are performing at a level that is anywhere near how high they were drafted: Alexei Kovalev and Marc Staal. (Chris Kreider in time will probably be in that category, but it's still early in his career).

3.) So 2 picks since 1989 have not turned out to be complete busts (I understand we still need time to evaluate the class of 2009 and beyond) for the Rangers and people are complaining about the picks in the St. Louis trade? This fantasy world in which the Rangers draft well doesn't exist.

Callahan is a 2nd line rental. What do you realistically expect to get for him that doesn't involve strong bust potential?
Usually, one does not need to throw away draft picks when dealing a second line player for a playoff push.

Typical Jackass move. Short-sighted, with no thinking of what the team needs......all for a new (though old) shiny new toy. Woo-hoo!!!

Lawton just tweeted this.

I hope no one buys that iron on ****.

The team doesn't need scoring? News to me.

This is more of an indication of the inability of management to properly develop or draft.

Let's look at the bright side - Sather is a day older today, one day closer to retirement. And he'll be a day older tomorrow too!

I'm thinking maybe only 10-15 more years of this Barnum and Bailey stuff, and he'll finally retire. I forget what having a real GM is like...

+1 for the "doesn't get it" club. Don't worry, you have a lot of company.

history doesn't lie

HUGE win for us.

What I mean by this is we trade Callahan for younger assets. I do not think we are an MSL away from the cup. It is not a huge win for us. Letting Cally go for nothing is better than trading him + picks for yet another short sighted miracle run.

Other teams make trades like this when they're one player away from winning the Cup. We make trades like this to solidify a low playoff seed.

Show me a softer top 9 in the league? We will throw no hitters every night

hagelin needs to play with goal scorers...he really should be playing with Nash imho.

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Pouliot - Brassard - MZA (when healthy)
Kreider - Richards - MSL

To me, thats a damn good top 9.

upgrading pouliot would be my next goal if im Sather. might as well go for it, this move already proves we wanna win now.

Maybe go get Moulson and stick him on the Brassard line?

Tampa is downgrading. Of course the Rangers would have to send picks.

Look, I'd prefer Callahan was traded for futures. But that was never an option. This trade is better than keeping him for two more months then letting him walk, IMO.

wow +1 for the "REALLY doesn't get it" club

:shakehead

pretty sure anyone would rather have 2 years of an ELITE player over a pick that, history says will probably suck.

oh and we don't have to give a grinder 6m x 6 to sit in the press box with a broken something

Yeah, teams trade current UFA captains who demand outrageous prices for older elite wingers who demand a trade to that team with an ntc when they're one player away from winning a cup.

This isn't a trade teams normally make in any situation. There is a ton of context here that is being completely brushed aside.

It's trades like this that illustrate how it is that the Rangers are such a successful organization. Past. Present. Future.
