That's probably exactly what they are saying. That's exactly what the argument on this board was too. Exactly.

This is a team thats 14th in the league in points.

How many more times is management going to spit in the face of reality and go for the big "over the top" move??? Its happens every ****ing season.

Ryan Callahan's original ask of 8 years at $7.5 late last summer should be marked as the starting point for his New York departure.

.....and this explains everything! Sather did his job because Cally wanted out. That kind of demand says I bleed blue if you nourish me with green. On what planet and what team does he think this type of payment would endear him to anyone, including his team mates? Rangers had no choice.

It's called negotiating......

Don't like this trade. MSL does not push us over the top. Not this year. Not next year. Not the year after.

Sather seems to finally learn restraint during contract negotiations. Still hasn't learned not to give up futures for 30+ year olds. The shortsightedness from him never ceases to amaze me. Poor gamble after poor gamble, we are always only one piece away from the cup. Nash was supposed to be that piece. Richards before him. Gaborik before him.

This team still has glaring issues to address if they are to beat BOS/PIT/ANA/STL/SJS in a prolonged series.

Just Sather being Sather. Mortgaging the future and hoping and praying for a miracle.

What?

So you would have rather kept Callahan at that amount, and his lack of production?

Ive been outspoken about Callahan deserving a $6m contract, but if the sticking point was a NTC that Sather didn't want to give, that's fine with me. That'd be killer.

hagelin needs to play with goal scorers...he really should be playing with Nash imho.

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Pouliot - Brassard - MZA (when healthy)
Kreider - Richards - MSL

To me, thats a damn good top 9.

upgrading pouliot would be my next goal if im Sather. might as well go for it, this move already proves we wanna win now.

Maybe go get Moulson and stick him on the Brassard line?

guts guys dont deserve 6 mil a year contracts. no, no no.

im sorry but 6x6 was a GROSS overpayment for what Cally gives you.

Id give him 5x5, thats all.

Dan Girardi, a top pairing defenseman, got 5.5 a year for 6 years...on what planet does Cally deserve more?

I dont have a beef with this trade for today. we just got a LOT better. I have a beef with this trade for tomorrow...esp if we make it to the conf finals and lose...thats cally and 2 firsts for esentially "nothing"

we need to win the cup in the next few years. go get me another top 9 player.

No. I'd rather trade Callahan for someone who could help this team for more than 2-3 seasons.

and who did you expect to get that is locked up for 5 years at a reasonable cap hit with a rental callahan?

We're not trading alexander ovechkin here. It's ryan callahan, for goodness sake...

consider Girardi:

- Plays the #1 spot in his position on our team
- Asked for less years, and less money
- Eventually Negotiated to a reasonable cap hit at the length he desired

Consider Callahan:

- Plays the #3 spot in his position (just factoring right wing, if you look at the forwards as a whole, he plays a #9 position)
- Asked for max years, at VERY high cap hits
- Took a "discount" still equivalent to a massive overpayment

I can understand fans buying in and hoping, but management doing the same is such a joke. Clown car driving the team.

I think the majority of people here, as well as the management, are in the "win now" camp aren't there because we think the team is now the best in the league. It's because the team has an elite goalie in his prime, a strong defense core signed and in their prime, and a pretty decent group of forwards in their prime.

More accurately, this is a team that is not a cellar dweller who needs to rebuild like the 03-04 team was. As long as they have Hank and that defense, anything is possible. Trading away a beloved yet glorified shot blocker for last years Art Ross winner gives this team another offensive threat. Essentially, this team got back what they lost in letting Torts ruin Gaborik last season. With Nash and MSL, this team is a lot more equipped to score and play with the good teams in the league. Getting pushed around isn't nearly as bad if you're outscoring the teams you play. Last time I checked, scoring more goals than your opponent means winning the game, not blocking more shots or throwing more hits.

I'm not saying they will win the Cup, but for this year and next, their odds got better. How much better? We'll find soon enough.

At the end of the day it's just excuses. Ultimately they sit 1 point away from being out of a playoff spot. Yet they are now buyers of this magnitude and "contenders".

I disagree. At the end of the day that's a very reasonable reason for a team to take a bit to put it all together.

I don't get why we're disregarding context while we have it. They started rough with a new coach and complete strategy overhaul. Not that strange. They lost 2 games to 2 good teams last. Not that strange or unusual. They "bought" an elite star winger who they got for a low, low price due to circumstance. That's not nearly the same as buying a star at full price to win right now.

Callahan had to go. Maybe the alternate dream scenarios people would have preferred didn't even exist. If they can recoup that 2015 before the draft, they traded a rental who demanded absolutely ridiculous money and a second for a star winger with a reasonable amount of contract left. Putting where the team is aside even, that deal makes sense. Young players need a good team to hit their stride fully. Kreider will get some time in with MSL on his wing. Fast/Miller/Allen/McI whoever else will come up on a team that isn't paying Callahan an albatross contract, and very likely will have MSL, who is a great leader in his own right and who fits AV's system far better and can actually score, helping to solve this teams most obvious problem for years now.

You're free to think what you want but I really don't see the logic to all the doom and gloom posts about this.

Does MSL kill penalties? Losing Callahan could really hurt the PK. Makes it hard to dress Carcillo over Boyle, Moore, or Dorsett (who hasn't been used much on the PK this year for some reason).

We now have Boyle, Hagelin, Moore, Stepan, Zucc, and Nash/Dorsett

This trade is a "win-now", "one player away" trade. That is not what this team is. This team is not in a position to give away draft picks for a 36 year old.

Typical Jackass trade for a fantasy hockey team. MSL is not what this team was lacking from being a true contender.

Trade our under 30 captain along with multiple picks for an aging superstar .......hmmmm where have I seen this before? Can't say I'm happy about this move right now I might need 24 hours to absorb this one.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but, we should agree that it takes time to adapt to a new system, correct? let's say it take 10 games.

if you take the first 10 games outta the picture because of "adjustment time" and then backdate those points to the same level theyve produced at since then, they go from 10th in the East to 3rd in the East.

So this is a good team, theyre just not an elite team. For us to win, we need a lot more to go right than the better teams.

Callahan is a 2nd line rental. What do you realistically expect to get for him that doesn't involve strong bust potential?

This isn't typical Sather stuff at all.

MSL demanded a trade and demanded to come here. A rental who nobody in their right mind will resign, a first and a second is way, way less than MSL would cost in normal circumstances.

This wasn't trade the farm for an old guy, this as jump on an opportunity to turn a player you can't resign into a far better player who actually provides what your team lacks.

Cally at that asking price was absurd. I don't blame management. But it's still sad watching him go.

Cue sad Billy Joel songs being played on loop all day by me.

Our under 30 captain that wanted under 30 elite superstar money. If he wants to handcuff someone with that, go to toronto. They already have clarkson

The under 30 stuff is nonsense because neither the Rangers nor their trade partner have any interest in signing him.

Callahan was a sunk cost for the Rangers, whether he was 19, 29, or 39.
