St. Louis will be on a line with Richie, to begin with.

I'm not certain i'd like Hagelin with them, though.

I still don't know where Hags should play. He shouldn't be on the top 2 lines. Our 3rd line shouldn't be broken up too.

cally for 6 more years at 6 per is worse than not having msl on the roster 2 years from now. if its a 1st and a 2nd for 4 years of cap space and 2 yrs of msl, thats still worth it to me.

well win more games with msl than we would with cally. hard to argue that.

of all the options, this one is the best we could have asked for. too many people are hung up on the draft picks.

the market for cally just wasnt there.

I'm thinking the posters that will continue to whine about this trade just don't understand the scenario Sather had on his plate.
Callahan demanding/looking for $6m per alone is enough to show him the exit let alone the 6/7 years of a new contract he was seeking. Yes, Callahan was the Captain. He was also a 3rd line grinder who put up points in the mid 40s. Investing that much in that little production would hold this team back.
Wonder if those same posters that are whining about this trade would be happy with Sather have extending Callahan at $6m for the next 6 years. If you're one of those posters, please post your age after every post from here on out.
You would think its rather fortunate that a player like St. Louis and his remaining contract for next year would want to be traded here.
Now Sather needs to be careful this off-season... getting Richards off the books, deal with resigning some players, perhaps a shrewd trade here or there and go after a couple of top FAs... ideally a top C so Stepan can drop down and play with Hagelin and St. Louis and see what next year brings.
As for this year? Another 1st round exit? Perhaps some other teams get/have some key injuries? Who knows???

Nash, Richards, St. Louis
Kreider, Stepan, Hagelin

or

Nash, Stepan, Kreider
Hags, Richards, St.Louis

?
OR

Hags, Stepan, Nash
Kreider, Richards, St.Louis

Don't like option #1. Nash and Kreider can both play either wing, but seems like they prefer RW and LW respectively.

None of the above. Kreider-Richards-St. Louis looks like the most logical place to start. Pairs two old friends and linemates with the most physically gifted and dynamic scoring youngster on the team.

I haven't fully wrapped my head around this deal, but one thing I am certain about...

I am extremely glad we did not re-sign Callahan at that price.

Putting aside the fact he is not worth it, I am glad I will not have to watch him slowly be hated by Ranger fans.

I can understand fans buying in and hoping, but management doing the same is such a joke. Clown car driving the team.

I imagine the same stuff being thrown around in the Rangers war room.

"Ya know, if you take away the first 10 games, and the last 2, and most of December, I really think we've got a contender here!"

Ryan Callahan's original ask of 8 years at $7.5 late last summer should be marked as the starting point for his New York departure.

.....and this explains everything! Sather did his job because Cally wanted out. That kind of demand says I bleed blue if you nourish me with green. On what planet and what team does he think this type of payment would endear him to anyone, including his team mates? Rangers had no choice.

Is it not understandable that a team with a new coach and a new game plan struggled at the very beginning of implementing it? It's not like people are willing to brush aside the start of the season for completely arbitrary reasons. New coach, new system, from Torts' insane game plan to a modern, possession based one, big change on D strategy as well.

“@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Callahan and Rangers were really close at the end, just $200,000 apart a year or so... lack of NTC in deal apparently big issue though...â€

$200k TOO much still.

Glad he's gone!

MSL is an amazing player. You guys forget he the league MVP last season and he's going to further improve our PP. Hopefully he brought Brad Richard's left nut with him. He definitely needs to play with a finisher but he's quite an accomplished scorer himself. Shootouts got a lot better too. Hopefully he can rub off on Zuke. What better role model? The first sucks. Two 2nds was more my flavor but he has 1 year left and I'm confident he's going to be playing a long time like Teemu Selanne has so hopefully Sather can get him resigned at Teemu numbers (Teemu signs 1 year deals $3-4M, 2 this year). Also, our drafting hasn't really proven to be game changing. We get some decent players but we really need that 1st line center (that Richards was supposed to be) to get to the next level and I don't have confidence in Sather and Gordie that they will ever find one in the draft positions we always end up in.

this is just sad

probable 2 first round draft picks. Wouldn't one first round pick and cally have gotten this deal done?
Looking down the road 3-5 years from now this can't be a good trade.

That's probably exactly what they are saying. That's exactly what the argument on this board was too. Exactly.

At the end of the day it's just excuses. Ultimately they sit 1 point away from being out of a playoff spot. Yet they are now buyers of this magnitude and "contenders".

Don't like this trade. MSL does not push us over the top. Not this year. Not next year. Not the year after.

Sather seems to finally learn restraint during contract negotiations. Still hasn't learned not to give up futures for 30+ year olds. The shortsightedness from him never ceases to amaze me. Poor gamble after poor gamble, we are always only one piece away from the cup. Nash was supposed to be that piece. Richards before him. Gaborik before him.

This team still has glaring issues to address if they are to beat BOS/PIT/ANA/STL/SJS in a prolonged series.

Just Sather being Sather. Mortgaging the future and hoping and praying for a miracle.

Hagelin wasting those scoring opps will make my blood boil

hags may have claws for hands but his speed and hustle can change the dynamic of that line.

hes a guy that makes his line mates better with his wheels. he creates time and space.

that line has 2 shooters with beev and msl. hags can do the grunt work.

i like that line.

I read it more as that he wanted out of NYR, specifically, and not that he'll get that type of payment elsewhere
