ahhhh, HFboards where 1st round picks are solid gold...

I agree, but to be fair, it's potentially 2 first round picks with one of them definitely being in the McDavid draft. Even I have a hard time swallowing that.

They didn't dismantle the team or anything. The difference between Callahan and MSL is being understated around here. I'm not sure I like the deal, but we'll see.

It often takes a long time to build a team after a move like this.

Will we make the POs this season?

You mean a move where you give up a 1st and a 2nd in a different draft for a 1st line player? How many times have you seen similar trades go down and had the team collapse not long after, then take a long time to build back up again?

Or are you exaggerating?

I'm not worried about it being the "McDavid draft," I'm worried about the one-in-fifty chance that nothing works for us next year and we suck. I would have rather seen the picks flipped but I guess Slats would agree.

I view this as a commitment to Lundqvist. We're gonna make a push for it as long as he's in his prime. I like that.

On the other hand, there's that thing with giving up our 2nd 1st rounder in 3 years. I know a pick is far from a sure thing, but I don't exactly like it.

Then again, we gave up none of McI, Lindberg, Fasth, Miller. If they can make an impact this year and next year, we could be good. Also, the Callahan situation has been solved. It'll be interesting to see how this team does without him.

What is gonna be interesting now is, what are the Rangers gonna do with Richards? Are they fully committing to the win-now mode, or are they half-assing it and buying him out?

It's a risky trade. Anything less than a SCF appearance while MSL is here and I'll say it's a failure. The LA Kings showed 2 years ago, though: Sometimes you gotta take risks.

St. Louis becomes the leading point scorer by the Rangers by 27 points and he hasn't even played a game for them

LULZ .... perspective .... :)

Everyone keeps harping on the picks and forgets that picks ... are just that .... picks ... and it's not like we finish in the bottom of the league where that will be a TOP 10 pick. If we were a "borderline" playoff team who could tank I could see this being disastrous ... but we are not.

Trading a UFA for an Art Ross winner is dismantling the team.

Pls, look at this without bias. Complain about tyhe picks, fine. But the main thing you're concerned about is moving Callahan for an elite player???

I'm a little upset, Z.

I really do love MSL. One of my favorite players. He's also just under 40, and his contract expires at the end of next year. If it was straight up, I might be able to stomach it. But we turned from sellers to buyers, and used a rental as a chip. In no universe is that a good idea.

Sather had the best year of Rangers hockey in nearly 20 years, and then relapsed into his old addiction. A MSL who's only got a few years left, a Richards who's about to be bought out, Nash, who I don't think will ever win anything. I don't even mind Richards, actually.

Sell the future for an aging superstar. Sather found the only way to outdo himself. Sell the team captain, AND the future for the aging superstar.

Really doesnt matter. The difference between a CF and an early exit is Henrik Lundqvist.

Maybe. But in 11-12 Henrik played great and we simply couldn't score enough to beat the Devils.

The picks that we gave up--assuming they turn into good NHL players, which is a big assumption--when would they be ready to help us win the Cup? Four years? Five years? And what does the team look like then? Is Lundqvist still elite? Richards is probably gone. Is Staal around? How is Nash performing? Is Girardi almost done? We could draft a great player with that first in 2015, but would there be a good team left for him to help?

Say we recoup a second or third round pick for Boyle. We're out a first round pick. That sucks. Is it the difference between a successful future and one where we're cellar dwellers? Does one prospect make the difference?

Does MSL make the difference over the life of the window? Why is the window always closing? Why is it ever sustained for more than a season? It's a deeper issue than just this trade. It's the entire culture of the franchise.

I liked cally and if not for his insane price demands, would have liked to keep the guy but at this rate this is great news because i love watching St.Louis play.

Sather is obviously modeling his team-building philosophy from all those teams that built Stanley Cup champions by consistently trading away first and second round draft picks.

We just traded a grinder for one of the most elite playmakers in the world and people are complaining about trading a couple picks hahaha

I think the real trade is MSL for 1st and 2nd. That is fare price, although many would disagree. Cally is an addition, a free one. He could be had back in July, I don't think there is any bridges burnt. I can't believe Yzerman will sign him for anything close to 6 million. Heck, Steve may have already a trade lined up to move Callahan today.
