There is no such thing as a young 38...he's only going to play 2-3 more seasons. Mark Recchi was a good player until his final game and played into his early 40s. Thats not the point, the point is that you just traded your captain and a freaking 1st possibly another 1st for a 2 year rental player on the downside of his career.

Welcome back to the dark ages holy ****.

Much hyperbole here. Marty can play till he's 42-43 years old. He's also an elite player still.

I hope we either lose in the 2nd round or win the cup.

Whatever, I don't like the idea of never having 1st round picks, but Hank is gonna be 32, and now's the time to make a run (2014-16)

I didn't realise there was a 2 years from now, according to the Rangers, there isn't.

My point was not getting your "So much for St Louis with Kreider bla bla" statement, which I'm assuming was directed at people saying he would play well with Kreider.

i dont understand that statement. He wont the Art Ross trophy last year and he is now our team's leading scorer. How is that the downside of his career?

I hate the 2015 going to Tampa Horrible deal by Sather ,.Tampa had one option only 1 and Sather got fleeced..

Sather basically blew up the team that was 1 goal away from game 7 in the conference finals.

Torts is not the coach anymore, we got a new system and need to adjust the line-up to it. Love the trade. A late 1st is no guarantee. I want to see a real attempt for the Cup.

St Louis demands a trade and Yzerman has no choice but to send him to the Rangers. Sather holds all the leverage here, and this is what happens.

Our pathetic GM giving us yet another sad day in our history.

Lundqvist is signed for another 7 years. Do the Rangers trade Lundqvist in the next few years?

The Rangers better add some size and strength to the line-up AND get a major upgrade at center AND get an offensive D.

What is the plan?

Is MSL just the replacement for BR who will be bought out? BR needed to be replaced, we destroy this team by just dumping him.

Will we recover youth by moving Zucc? Of even Nash? (Can't see the later)

Where is the offense from the blueline going to come from?

Where are we getting size from?

Is this Slats or Gortons work?

Can't believe we gave up this much for a 38 y/o.

"gut the franchise" ... "giving up hope" ... "trading the future" ... "we are ruined" .... I can't take this seriously

I cant take this move seriously when the thinking that bringing in ANOTHER RW, who happens to be 38 years old, is a positive step.

This team isn't winning a damn thing until they upgrade at center and add a playmaking defenseman.

The business plan continues to be to cherry pick the players that become available, regardless of position.

Your captain would have been lost for nothing if this deal doesn't happen. he is a rental because his demands are ridiculous. MSL wanted to be here; he will have an immediate positive impact cause he's a great player. As for how long he plays, we'll see. He may go for 4 or 5 based on his durability and health. If we capture a cup in those years, it will be worth it. I'm more bothered by the picks then Cally.

Hes a young 38 with a lot to prove

Wayne Gretzky is coming to the Rangers !!! :p:

This is a star player we are getting during the season. This is somebody coming in that is playing well ALREADY!!!

There's an old saying about young guys coming to NYC(or Wash DC) with alot to prove, coming here is unlike anywhere else, you never know what that change will do to ya(said Brad Richards).

Sign me up right now for an ECF appearance...please!

And after all, the ECF is where its at, we all aspire to get to the final four, thats good enough for now right ?

Its easy to hate this deal when we've seen so many veterans come here and burn, but MSL is a freak of nature. Im going to enjoy his time here, which I feel will be 3-4 years of high level play. That's not guaranteed of course, but id have said the same thing a month ago when he was playing for another team. There are only a handful of players with his skill level. enjoy it

We have had a lot of vets come in and burn, but a lot of it has to do with the fact that we paid these guys contracts they could never live up too.

Even Scott Gomez improved his point total his first year with the rangers compared to the year before.

Drury declined a bit but was not far from his career averages, us ranger fans just expected these guys to do more because of the insane money we gave them

1. Can you prove that the team is somehow going to collapse when MSL leaves?

2. What makes you think a few extra mid-first and 2nd round picks was going to make all the difference between a successful and unsuccessful future?

Adding MSl for this helps our chances marginally in the short run, and hurts us marginally int he long run. The impact isn't nearly as extreme as your hyperbolic assertions.

In the salary cap world, you need a steady stream of young talent to replace older, higher priced players. Without those picks, and the picks we gave up for Clowe, and the pick we gave up for Nash, where are these young players coming from?

Yeah, the draft is a crap shoot, but the more picks you have, the better your chances of selecting good young talent. And conversely, with less picks, the less chance we have.

So again, where are these young players coming from? Are we hanging all of our hopes on Duclair, Kristo, Fast and Lindberg? Or are we going to go back to signing the biggest free agent every year?

Nash hasn't been great for us. He isn't a difference maker. Clowe did nothing for us. What exactly do you expect to get out of MSL besides some slightly more entertaining hockey for the next couple years?

I'm sorry, but unless we win a cup with MSL here, this is an abject failure, and I don't see us winning a cup any time soon.

Extremely mixed feelings right now.

Points will be debated across this board, but one thing strikes me as eerily consistent with this franchise:

Bringing in aging vets at the end of their careers is the time honored tradition: Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur, Bernie Geoffrion, et. al.

Giving away high draft picks and or young talent to get old wine... and in this perhaps, fine wine.

What's done is done as they say. Just seems the Rangers will never do things differently.

Sigh. Yup. Spot on.

So funny that people have gnashed their teeth about losing Dubi and Cally and other "homegrown" types, but no one is willing to show the patience and effort to acquire and groom their own stars who play here in their prime.

Look where we pick usually in the 1st and then show me who we've picked over the past 10 years. Outside of Staal and Kreider, we've traded just about everyone else already.

No big thang...

Love the trade.
