1. Of course you can't prove it.

2. The assumption is that our current prospects will not pan out, but the players we would have drafted with the picks WOULD pan out.

It's Hockey's Future. While I understand that "Win now, at all costs!" is not a healthy mentality when it comes to running a franchise, HF takes it the other way--do nothing now other than develop players and stockpile draft picks. I'm not surprised in the slightest that people are on the verge of suicide over the thought of giving up a first and second.

Well said, my friend.

St. Louis - Richards - Hagelin tonight if they can get him here in time. They just said

Lines I'd like to see when healthy:

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Kreider-Richards-St. Louis
Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello
Boyle-Moore-Dorsett
Carcillo

Hagelin and Nash were great together last year, and Richards and St. Louis need some size on their line. Another negative about the trade is that Stepan is now the only righty in the top 9.

The first part is debatable. We have some good, young prospects at the moment, and either or both of those picks can be recouped at a later date. Say we move Boyle and pick up a second. Is the difference between a bright future and a bleak furture entirely based on having a first round pick in 2015? If so, then the team is and always will be ****ed.

Again, the future isn't mortgaged. I'd easily wager we acquire at least one of those picks back in a later trade. Are we on the cusp of winning a Cup? Maybe, maybe not. We're closer than we were before.
Yeah, he just took us from a 2nd round exit to a 3rd - you know, just far enough that the 2nd becomes a 1st.

We're in a better spot than we were yesterday.

Oh, that depends ENTIRELY on your perspective. My perspective is I want to build a consistent contender for the long haul. I think we're in a much, much worse spot now.

There is no such thing as a young 38...he's only going to play 2-3 more seasons. Mark Recchi was a good player until his final game and played into his early 40s. Thats not the point, the point is that you just traded your captain and a freaking 1st possibly another 1st for a 2 year rental player on the downside of his career.

Welcome back to the dark ages holy ****.

We have to hope that first rounder in 2015 was going to be a late 2015.

The fear is everyone thinking we are going to be like the Knicks of this season. I hope not, I hope Marty leads us

I will always think fondly of you, Cally. Good luck with your future.

Bit of reality. Still no top C, offensive D man. Team likely with a very low shot to win it all the next two years. Richards still needs to be cut. So a LOT can get ******** between now and the time St. louis is up for a new contract.

Lastly it better be a lottery protected first. Some people are severely overrating the value of a first round pick especially a likely late one but if it turns out to be a lotto pick and we were too stupid to protect it that'll piss me off. When's the last time a 1st round FORWARD of ours became half of what St. Louis is right now and what he likely will be for the next few years?

Trading Callahan is problematic from the get go because he's not a piece that contending teams are looking for in this year's market. Period.

He's not going to resign very easily with BUF up to giving Callahan money and term to become BUF's local leader for their youth group.

He's a crappy rental. You're not going to fetch a top price for Callahan. His contract here would have been absolutely disastrous. I mean, can you justify buying out RIchards over Callahan? :sarcasm: ?

We now have:

Three dangerous offensive lines and one of the best fourth lines

A beast defense

And Hank

We'll see.

I am generally FOR acquiring elite pieces like Nash... though when they are age 28, not age 38.

But, while I would rather have this Rick Nash than AA and Dubi, somehow the players we import are never what we hoped, either.

So I'll believe we have 3 elite offensive lines when I see it... this is the same team that has been struggling to score all year. One player gives them 3 elite lines? I dunno.

St. Louis is a top ten player in the league on a good contract that ends next year. I'm liking this more and more, as the NYR will never be in a position to draft a superstar themselves.

Put that C on Girardi's jersey

You did this to yourself, Ryan.

^This.

We've had much worse rosters and not finished bottom-10. Rangers almost never finish bottom-10.

Unless Lundqvist loses a leg in a drag-race accident, we arent finishing that low.

And this.

The Rangers will never be bottom feeders with Hank. This deal is wayyyyy preferable to giving Callahan what he wanted.

Exactly....highly unlikely that pick is top 10....to 20 even....and if your going for it.....this sets the bar.

Here is another bona fide elite player ....that didn't f up the roster....now go win

Not happy we gave up another 1st. Is the conditional pick whether or not St. Louis re-signs here?

So root against the Rangers if you don't want to lose the draft pick. Problem solved!

You want to build a consistent contender with unproven draft picks. With a roster that isn't rebuilding, you want to rebuild.

Extremely torn by this trade. CAPTAIN Cally I will miss. The player, not so much. Especially for that silly money he demanded.

Martin St. Louis is showing few signs (if any) of suddenly slowing down: http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8466378. But we all fear a new Richards scenario (even though I do consider his downfall to be a *tad* overstated here).

Hockey wise we made a stellar trade, future wise: not so much. But, what were our options really? Letting Cally go for a 2nd rounder or a Stewart-esque player (and that's if we were lucky judging by how much we had to pay for MSL with Cally included), or letting him walk for nothing? Or were we going to pay Cally 6 mill + for 6 years? Read on twitter Cally has missed more games THIS season than MSL had the last 5 years so..

Our core this and next season looks solid to me.. If Hank continues like he did before and during the Olympics, and if MSL is even remotely close to the player he was in Tampa... We might cause some ruckus in the playoffs. Our centers are our achilles heel now though, but hopefully MSL will raise the level of play from Steps or Richie. He'll be absolutely vital for our younger lads as a role model too.

Carefully optimistic.
