I don't understand the 'Sather has two years to get a 2015 first rounder back'. Really? REALLY?

So we're going for it the next two years by sacrificing the future, but during that time frame we're going to trade a major asset for a first rounder?

That logic makes zero sense. Either go for it or don't go for it. We all know there is no chance we will recoup that first round pick.

There is a better chance we trade our 2016 first rounder too, while our window is perpetually closing.

St Louis demands a trade and Yzerman has no choice but to send him to the Rangers. Sather holds all the leverage here, and this is what happens.

Our pathetic GM giving us yet another sad day in our history.

I don't like giving up the draft picks either but Yzerman still does NOT have to trade St Louis. He was smart to get what he could as he knows Callahan is probably not signable. Tampa Bay will take the salary slot Callahan occupies, maybe go after Vanek or get another pick (compensatory) for losing Callalhan.

Yep. Callahan signed the trade himself with his demands. He left the team over a couple of hundred K on a contract he didn't really deserve in the first place.

Bye, Ryan.

....That quote just said it was over a NMC. He didn't want to be traded. They money was just about set.

Where this team is at even with MSL's addition, is still not a strong cup contender. I could understand this deal better if there was more in it for the Rangers. But with all the other top teams--Chi, SJ, Pit, Bos, etc. We are not going to make the Finals this year, MSL or not.

Yeah, that Strang report means to me that at least Sather realized that even 6-for-6 was waaaay overpaying and at the end of the day the Rangers didn't even really want to do that (and especially not without the ability to move him elsewhere).

I guess they deserve credit there.

I hate giving up that first round pick though.

Yes and that NMC was a big deal ... reason why ... what he wanted was more than his production was being valued + most players regress as they get older they don't improve.

Stop defending the trading of picks. Its not what the picks become. Its the friggin failed strategy.

Sather just gave up two assets for one year and a postseason for Bernie Federko.

The rangers are looking at 3 straight years without a 1st rounder and the last one they got was 28th overall.

Maybe all of those reports about the Rangers being close to signing him was just trying to drive his trade value as high as they could?

I think Callahan and his agent tried to play this down to the wire but underestimated Sathers willingness to make a trade.

Waiting until the last minute to close the gap when Sather was keenly interested in MSL was probably foolish if Callahan's real first choice was to stay in NY

The draft picks make me nervous, can't deny that. The Rangers will have to really make some good later round picks, but I'm glad they didn't give up guys like Miller

Not just that, but St Louis' NMC expires over the summer.

I don't understand why people equate "Win now" and "No future." We still have all of our current prospects. We'll still have a first this year and a second next year, or some variation depending on how well we do. We'll still be able to draft good players. We have more flexibility under the cap than had we retained Callahan.

It's not in any way mortgaging the future. We sacrificed a piece of the future (the "three or four years from now" future) to have a better present and better immediate future. We're in a good spot.

Love Cally, but love the trade.

You can't pay the kind of money that Cally wanted for a guy that doesn't produce for that sort of money without hurting a team's depth.

That 2015 1st wouldn't be in the NHL until the year 2018 unless it's a top 5 pick. The Rangers can sign UDFA to fill the void. It's not as if the farm is barren.

Going to miss Cally, grateful for all that he's done, and I hope he cashes in as UFA.

MSL contributes towards a goal a game for the team, and is a significant bump up in terms of offensive production than Cally, and that is a world of difference when you have a goalie like Hank.

Heart and Soul leader at 50pts a season vs Heart and Soul leader at 90 pts.

Rangers win today, while making a playoff team weaker.

Deal sucks for TB no matter how you look at it. They'll have 3 months of Cally and a couple of draft picks for a walking hall of famer who is an impact player.

Definitely not a part of the ageism crowd here. Aahhhh draft picks.. aahhhh.

Here is another interesting question:

Would you rather ...

A - Sign Callahan for 6.5 x 6
B - Trade Miller or another prospect INSTEAD of the picks for MSL
C - Stand pat and not get anything for Callahan

Would I rather have kept the 2015 pick? YES OF COURSE, but I am HAPPIER we didn't sign Callahan and kept our youth and added MSL for 2 years possibly a third.

Why are those our only options? How about we don't trade for MSL and we instead trade Cally for a young player or two on the cusp of making/breaking out in the NHL? How about we look further than the tip of our noses when building this team?

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Hagelin-Richards-St. Louis
Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello
Carcillo-Moore-Miller/Dorsett

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Stralman
Moore-Klein

Boyle out for a 2nd
It could be better, and we are only hanging onto playoff position, but there are few chinks in that armor. A lack of size is one.

Sorry they are trying to win a Cup. MSL will score a ton and he will resign, he will be another Jagr.
