i wouldnt hate a Goodrow-Brodz-Gauthier 4th line in the playoffs but it would be nice to find one more bottom 9 forward, maybe even a guy who can score a bit to put with Kreider and Trocheck and move Vesey to the 4th line.
How about Vesey on 4th with Goodrow and Gauthier and Kravtsov on third with Kreider and Trochek?

In modern hockey you need to hit on a decent number of your first round picks to be a good contending team.

The more we give away for rentals (nothing, essentially), the worse off we are.

The Rangers are a hair better today than they were yesterday. Not sure how much they are "back."

This could be Eric Staal all over again.

Even if it's MSL, how'd that work out? No hardware.

Explain to me how filling their most glaring need is similar in any way to the aging Lundqvist Rangers adding Eric Staal.

I mean hardware isn't the end all be all. Some of my favorite moments as a fan involved MSL (sniping it over Tokarski in OT), worth the price to me.

This is ultimately entertainment. If Tarasenko scores some memorable, clutch goals I'm happy.

We're back, as in going to the playoffs (extremely likely) and having a non-zero chance to win when we get there. That's gonna be fun. That's what it's all about.

The hardware is luck-based and most cores come and go without winning one. That's just the reality.

No ones fault - please remember the last deal we made with the Blues
Again. Done and over with. People have every right to go full negative temper tantrum.

I choose to be excited to watch Mika, Zib, Tank.

Bread is here for at least 2 more seasons. At least try to get someone on his level to get some value out of Artemis contract.

I mean Sammy, Hunter ECHL Skinner? The only thing that always sucks is giving up a 1st for a rental. We have another. The better one.

For the life of me I can't see how he can possibly be resigned if he thrives here. Goody and Lindgren would have to go I guess. Who knows?

Unlike some others. I think Tank has some more left in the tank.

Im stoked, until i realize that gallant will f*** up his usage or screw one of the kids over.

I have no faith in him to make the best of this

One team wins each year. Chances in any given year is you don't win. Give me deep runs and hopefully one year we get the breaks. There's nothing you can do to guaranteee anything. And that includes having all the picks.

I think this was a good trade. Sucks giving up a first but Tarasenko @50% was always going to be a first +. Skinner has no future in this organisation and Blais is a cap dump. The 4th rounder I don't care about.

You know how it is with prospects and picks around here.

I get that but Lafreniere and Kakko coming along slowly should illustrate that nothing is easy and nothing is guaranteed.

Skinner wasn't making it here because we're set at RD for the foreseeable.

Yes, it's a good draft, but even in a good one, there's more Galchenyuk's than Robertson's. We had an extra 1st to sell, so it's not like we're out of it like back in the day.

Does this move make us a "Cup contender?" Eh, I think the playoffs are so random that no move does that. People look at things black and white. You either mortgage the future or you don't. It either makes you a favorite or it doesn't.

I see this as a move being very much in a middle ground. We're not running away with the Cup now, but we're better. We paid a fair price, but we didn't sell the farm or tear down the future. It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other.

Eh, I think it's all about philosophy of team building. Your "we had an extra 1st to sell" might be my "having two picks increases our chances of landing on one of them" (see Lias and Chytil--I know I'm happy we had two picks that year). I'm not generally a fan of the "big" deadline addition, as I (like you) just don't think they move the needle that much. Shoring up some issues on the 3rd pair/bottom six? Sure (loved the Vatrano and Motte deals last year). Picking up someone who will or might be in the picture long term (like Copp last year)? Sure. I'm just never keen on moving a 1st rounder for a pure rental. I believe it's important to keep a constant stream of young/cheap talent coming through the system.

Having said that, if I WERE a fan of higher end rentals, the value on this trade could have been far worse.

We still have plenty in the tank that we have a chance to hit on.

That includes Lafreniere and Kakko still. Looks like Chytil has a good chance to get there. Othmann and Sykora are bullets in the chamber.

If you're getting a kid now, with a late pick, you're hitting on him in 2027, 2028. We don't know what the situation will be then.

Sure, you could say that the timeframe is a bit slower here than in other orgs, but what can we do? We do our best to work with what we've got.

Long-term improvements in development will be, well, long-term.

You know what deep runs are great for? Developing our young players. Chytil would be Vancouver Canuck right now if we didnt go on last years run.

Drury gave up a 1st to rent both players. Tarasenko at 50%. Blais was added for cap reasons. Skinner was a scratch in the AHL. Another mid round pick. The value isn't bad but hate giving up #1 pick. It would have cost 2nd or 3rd to rent a D but the rental D market is bad this season. 2nd for someone like Barbashev. Drury made his trade deadline moves 22 days before the deadline.
