Whose clearly ahead of them?

Boston? Yup they're a wagon.
Carolina? They're good too though they've been a consistent 2 and out for a while now.
Toronto? Sure but replace the 2 and out with 1.
Tampa is still Tampa so if you want to throw them in there I'll buy it.

Carolina is the only team in our division in that group. Some may say NJ but I'd peep their analytics, they've been ass for a while now and thats a team with next to no experience and they're really small. That never plays in the spring.
Truth is, most years, even with the best roster, you're not going to win the cup. I think this moves them closer to being good enough to beat any of those teams over 7 games.

I'm not losing sleep over a mid 20s draft pick even if it is a deep draft. We also still have one

Serious question. Would you rather make the playoffs every year only to get bounced in the 2nd round or have 3-4 year stretches where we are legit cup contenders but then are a seller at the deadline for 2-3 years?

Obviously the latter. To me this is much more in keeping with the former which is why I disagree w the consensus. The sugar high is always the highest right in this moment.

Really like the deal. Always liked Tank as a player, enough that I got his jersey when they won the cup. I think that he will be a great fit here

Full trade confirmed by team

The Rangers have had 4 1sts outside of the top 10 since 2017.

Chytil
Miller
Nils
Schneider.

All of them are playing in the NHL, 2 are borderline stars.

This meme is dumb.

Why did you ignore the firsts in the top 10, which have all been absolute disasters up until now? They’re all first round picks.

Two out of our 8 first round picks since 2017 are good players. I love Key and Chytil, neither are borderline stars. Maybe one day, I hope.

That’s a horrible rate, by any metric.

Not closing the book on the others of course. My point was I didn’t have expectations for that pick anyway.

Would expect them to get another bottom 6 guy. Probably a center so they can shoot Lechsychensurjen into the moon

You mean foolish teams who don't study the results of rentals usually give that up at the deadline and then don't win the Cup? Yes, that's pretty much exactly what happens normally.

Of course that’s what happens normally. Only one team wins the cup. Usually they have made a similar move.

Yeah but that's a pretty sizeable list when you are talking about playoff teams.

And yes NJ has the look of a team that exits early, but at the same time, they also have our number so far this year. That's not a team you should just count on playing us differently come the playoffs.

So I'd prefer to do something that's not foolishly bad value even if everyone else is doing it.

IMO you can't really just say "well we're not clearly the best team in the conference might as well tank it for next year"
Cuz...what happens if Boston loses some important players to injury? Carolina flames out again because their system is ass? Toronto loses in the first round again?

You don't HAVE to be the best team going into the playoffs to win the cup, you just need to survive the longest

IMO the situation the Rangers are in they need to take their shots now to some extent but I dont' think Drury is compeltely trading away the farm to do it either
Exactly...with 20-8-10 soon to move on it is vital to reinforce the team and mentor the Kids on how to play .

If the Rangers are in the metro bracket, only one of Boston, Toronto or Tampa is making it out alive to the ECF, even if you think all 3 are better than the Rangers, you only have to beat one of them.

And we still have a better first than the one we traded. You are grasping at straws
But one less than we had this morning.

Since the trade wasn't Lundkvist to Dallas for Tarasenko, then the argument that "well it's just like trading we swapped Lundkvist in this deal" doesn't hold water.

We acquired excess value through a shrewd move. That's good.

Today we handed it back. That's bad.

The two moves are evaluated independently because one doesn't necessitate the other.

If you like the deal then make that argument. "We swapped Lundkvist for Tarasenko" isn't an argument that has merit though.
