Great trade. Hopefully Tarasenko's friendship with Panarin produces results on the ice quickly. Last season he had 29 goals and 30 assists at even strength. He adds a lot of size to that line and the forward group in general. You'd like to keep the 1st round pick, but Tarasenko should have a much bigger impact than Copp had last year and at a lower cost.

Bingo.

I can't understand why people are so upset at this deal. Kane is dogshit wrapped in catshit. Meier is going to be way too expensive.

Drury addressed two needs, for a very reasonable price and did so before the deadline prices got crazy. It also gives Gallant some more time to find the right spot for Tarasenko and tinker with lines as needed.
You know how it is with prospects and picks around here.

I get that but Lafreniere and Kakko coming along slowly should illustrate that nothing is easy and nothing is guaranteed.

Skinner wasn't making it here because we're set at RD for the foreseeable.

Yes, it's a good draft, but even in a good one, there's more Galchenyuk's than Robertson's. We had an extra 1st to sell, so it's not like we're out of it like back in the day.

Does this move make us a "Cup contender?" Eh, I think the playoffs are so random that no move does that. People look at things black and white. You either mortgage the future or you don't. It either makes you a favorite or it doesn't.

I see this as a move being very much in a middle ground. We're not running away with the Cup now, but we're better. We paid a fair price, but we didn't sell the farm or tear down the future. It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other.

In all my years of watching hockey, which is double then most of you….
Sammy Blais is one of the worst players to ever skate in NYR Blue.
And I was rooting for him especially after than scumf*** hit his knee .
But even before the hit - he was unimpressive.
I hope he scores 20 in STL - but @ msg he was a terrible fit.

i wouldnt hate a Goodrow-Brodz-Gauthier 4th line in the playoffs but it would be nice to find one more bottom 9 forward, maybe even a guy who can score a bit to put with Kreider and Trocheck and move Vesey to the 4th line.

Blais, Goodrow, Gauthier did some damage. Cullye is better than Blais in the facets needed for that line.
What scares me is all the cross ice passes likely will be increased with Tarasenko over there . We likely be better served keeping the C back to defend on the picked off passes LOL.....oh well....they will figure it out and we'll hope for the best . He is a sniper and we never lost a roster player....bright side of that . Plus we have a Finn buddy for Kakko ....and that should not be overlooked and Harpur has been bad although he did try hard . The rest of the traded guys just fodder . The picks are always a crap shoot late in the draft ......now.....are we done ?

It is possible to trade first rounds picks for non-rentals…imagine if all the draft capital the NYR had spend on rentals over the years actually was used to add to the team over the medium/long term.

Last year was extremely fun and extremely fluky. I thought most agreed with that. This year Boston, Carolina are clearly ahead of the NYR. Toronto likely as well. Then I’d put Tampa, Devils, Rangers in the next tier. Maybe lightning will strike again. To me feels more like case in point of why the NYR trophy case looks the way it does.

I think part of the flukishness of last year's run was the degree to which they got owned by Pittsburgh who they owned all season prior. We definitely outplayed Carolina imo.

And in this assessment, I think you have to consider that if the rangers were firmly in that second tier with a gaping hole at RW and Harpur as your 6D, did they improve enough correcting that to at least fall on the threshold of that higher tier?

And the rangers have the key ingredient that makes them a viable candidate to win a series against any team, including Boston, and that's their goalie. Couldn't say whether he'll make up for that difference but I don't think anyone should suggest he couldn't.

The Rangers have had 4 1sts outside of the top 10 since 2017.

Chytil
Miller
Nils
Schneider.

All of them are playing in the NHL, 2 are borderline stars.

This meme is dumb.

Yeah, they actually have done well recently with late 1st defenders (Miller, Schneider, even Nils is in the NHL with potential) and in the more distant past, have done well with late-first forwards (Kreider, JT Miller).

@Machinehead you have any graphs comparing Harpur and Mikkola?

They're both devoid of offense but Mikkola is at least replacement level defensively.

He's not Rod Langway but we were desperate. He's at least an NHL player.
Here is one for Mikkola and Hajek.

"These two are basically the same except Hajek is two standard deviations worse at defense."

Sometimes good analytics does not mean good analysis.

But one less than we had this morning.

Since the trade wasn't Lundkvist to Dallas for Tarasenko, then the argument that "well it's just like trading we swapped Lundkvist in this deal" doesn't hold water.

We acquired excess value through a shrewd move. That's good.

Today we handed it back. That's bad.

The two moves are evaluated independently because one doesn't necessitate the other.

If you like the deal then make that argument. "We swapped Lundkvist for Tarasenko" isn't an argument that has merit though.

You talk about late first rounders like they are guaranteed to be on the roster in 3 years. They arent. case in point, Nils Lundkvist. Today is an exciting day for the franchise. We spent 5 years stockpiling picks and building this pipeline of players (0 of which we traded), and on the anniversary of the Letter they trade for a star player with a playoff pedigree. How excited do you think the team is?

Dont let the loss of a pick that may become nothing ruin what should be a happy moment. Cheer up buddy, the Rangers are back.

We could get anything, it could even be a Nils Lundkvist!

I do love a rangers deadline move though. Think I can skip the exercise bike today with that hour waiting for the trade details.

Keeping Kravy, Jones and Robertson is brillant

In modern hockey you need to hit on a decent number of your first round picks to be a good contending team.

The more we give away for rentals (nothing, essentially), the worse off we are.

The Rangers are a hair better today than they were yesterday. Not sure how much they are "back."

This could be Eric Staal all over again.

Even if it's MSL, how'd that work out? No hardware.

Yeah but that's a pretty sizeable list when you are talking about playoff teams.

And yes NJ has the look of a team that exits early, but at the same time, they also have our number so far this year. That's not a team you should just count on playing us differently come the playoffs.

So I'd prefer to do something that's not foolishly bad value even if everyone else is doing it.

If you think you can win the cup, you make short sighted moves to win the cup. I think we can win the cup and don’t think the move is foolish at all. Do you think we can win this year?
