Tarasenko is having a down year for counting numbers but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

First of all, the underlying numbers are showing poor shooting luck by his standards.

It also kept the price much lower versus if he were tearing it up.

Moving to a team more in the thick of things might be a nice reset for him. I was less inclined to buy that with Kane because the analytics tell us that Kane is just ass and has been for years. Not the case at all with Tarasenko.

Counting numbers aside, he has space-opening skill which we desperately need. It's going to help us even if he doesn't put up a ton of points.
Poor shooting luck? He'll fit right in!!!

Whose clearly ahead of them?

Boston? Yup they're a wagon.
Carolina? They're good too though they've been a consistent 2 and out for a while now.
Toronto? Sure but replace the 2 and out with 1.
Tampa is still Tampa so if you want to throw them in there I'll buy it.

Carolina is the only team in our division in that group. Some may say NJ but I'd peep their analytics, they've been ass for a while now and thats a team with next to no experience and they're really small. That never plays in the spring.
Hughes is injured week to week. The time to strike is now.

Top 5 in odds for the Cup is about where I’d do it. Not sure they are even too 5 in the East.
The first round pick doesn't get us closer to top contender status, and likely wouldn't for several years. Sometimes those assets are better used in the present. This team could have--IMO should have--won the ECF last year. There's no reason with another tweak or two that we can't be back in that spot.

Huge W imo. People upset at the Brett Howden/Libor Hajek late 1st are insane. Tank is a huge upgrade over Vesey in the top 6 even in a statistically down year, and Vesey gets to do his thing slotted down lower. Not to mention the upgrade over f***ing Harpur. I like the move a lot. Meier was 100% going to cost Othmann. And they still have Krav as an asset for the TDL. Yeah it'll probably suck when NJ lands Meier, but whatever. Hoping Tank lights it up here.

Like I said before I recently saw Kane play. Looks like a shell of himself. Hip injury or not, he just didn’t look good. But like you said it hasn’t been just this year.

Glad we stayed away .

This trade is such a huge win I really don't understand anyone being upset about it. It stings to lose the 1st but it's the lower of the two we had and we didn't give up any of our top prospects.

This isn't an Eric Staal trade. This isn't just chasing after a name whether he fits or not.

Tarasenko is exactly what we need to add to the forward group to slot the rest of the top 9 into place. Shoot first player, lethal from distance (something we lost in Vatrano) who commands respect all over the ice, him and Panarin weaving around is going to have defenses scrambling. Having them on a line together, then the kid line and then the Trocheck line gives the opponent 3 legitimate scoring lines to worry about and will create favorable matchups.

And then we get Mikkola who is a huge upgrade on Harpur.

Deadline Drury is a stone-cold ninja. Dumping Blais back on them is great too.

I would happily give up Othmann for Meier , the problem is it would have cost even more (2 1sts) and then signing him would be impossible.

Now that the full Trade is announced, can the massive overactions get flushed and plunged?

Krav, Jones, Robertson, Othmann, Cuylle still here.

Imagine if we resigned Andrew Copp? Good gawd.
No ones fault - please remember the last deal we made with the Blues

This is why I take trade deadline day off from work. Have work in 15 min and not gonna lie gonna suck not reading posting on here for the most part

Now that I'm cooling down..
I really like how Drury is targeting players for certain roles and not going for the big fish a'la Meier or Kane. Mikkola is a beast and a role player. Think of Lindgren lite with a bigger body, he eats pucks for living. Panarin - Zibanejad - Tarasenko has potential to be one of the best 1st lines in the league, and we still have two good scoring lines. This bumps Vesey to 4th line and lets him play in his role. A later of the 1st's, Skinner, 4th and Blais gone. Makes me wanna give my sister a kiss, on the cheek of course!

I also love the timing of this.

If things gel quickly, with hughes out week to week we could challenge for the home ice in whats looking more and more like the first round matchup

Update with complete trade

This is the key for me, and why I didn't want Kane.
Exactly right.

@Gardner McKay and I had a conversation on this - Kane should bring what we need because he profiles as a skill player than can cut through D, but he just doesn't open up space like you'd think he would. If he did, he wouldn't be an offensive drag on the Hawks.

Nobody will accuse Tarasenko of defending, but he's an offensive boon at even strength in terms of shots and scoring chances.
