This is a trade where Ottawa is obviously desperate to get back into the playoffs. Zibanejad has more room to grow and will likely become equal to Brassard. Problem being its probably going to be in 2 years. Ottawa doesnt want to wait.

The 2nd pick might give the overall value to the Rangers and definitely long term it will be better for them, but Brassard is DEFINITELY the better player right now and probably for the next 2-3 years. The Rangers are not exactly a future team. Maybe they have something else planned with the extra cap space though.

Rangers win, but so funny how mixed and all over the place reactions are

Also funny how value and perception of any Sens player ALWAYS goes way up when he is traded in order that we might ALWAYS be hosed in every single trade.

Ah, HF.

I've never seen so many mixed reactions before

Imo, this largely depends on that #2 pick... At the moment, Brass is the better player.

Great move by the Rangers. They get a younger version of brassard with a cost controlled cap hit. Plus they get paid a 2nd round pick for doing this trade.

great move by rags managements

Zibanejad is the sexier name but Brassard is easily the better player imo. I wouldn't say either team won or lost the trade but I really like his deal for Ottawa... definitely improved as a team.

Brassard is a great player performing at high standards but so is Zibanejad and is 5 years younger cheaper only going to get better and would have been in Ottawa longer. Brassard has 3 years left on current deal. Not sure wtf Ottawa was thinking here .

I'm thrilled to have Brassard out of the division and I've never been terribly high on Zibanejad...but I still think the Rangers win this one long-term. This doesn't feel like a trade that really needed that 2nd round pick...but given the bonus money the Rangers just paid out it makes a bit of sense...that's peanuts (for the Rangers) to get a decent pick, though.

I first was going to defend Ottawa by saying that maybe Ottawa doesn't believe Zib can truly put it together despite having had a good season last year but after reading about the bonus... yeah, long term money saving.

Sens have been rumored to have wanted Brassard since his days in Columbus so this came as no surprised. Brassard also has better possession and shot suppression numbers which will help Boucher`s system and the Sens over a full season. I also think mgmt thought he would be more of a consistent set up man for Hoff and Ryan on the 2nd, plus playing with Karlsson should help his numbers.

Every year Zibbys knock on him was that the came into camp in poor conditioning and a bit nonchalant. Plus he never showed consistent stretches of great play, which he was know to show flashes of every now and then, but never had that "fire in his gut".

Long term we could very well loose out, but were one of the younger teams in the league so it adding some experience isn't the worst thing in the world.

All in all good trade for both teams. Ottawa get some consistency and Zibby gets a fresh start in NY.

I think its a win/win for both.

Rangers needed to do something to shed some salary. Brassard is not at all on a decline and will see top line minutes in Ottawa. Zibanejad will likely get around the same money as Brassard on a new contract next year, if not more. Its a good move for the Rangers, but they're still stuck with Nash, Staal, and Girardi. Rangers could win in the long run depending on Zibanejad's further development and if he can maintain his output of last season, but I like the deal for Ottawa in the immediate.

May be a set up move by the Rangers for a bigger deal involving one of the albtrosses but its a step in the right direction although Brassard's departure impacts them immediately and Zibanejad is no guarantee to replace him completely.

There's no clear cut "winner" yet. There's positives and negatives for both teams, but I think there's more ifs for the Rangers espc with Zibanejad needing a new deal shortly.
