Ottawa fans, rest assured that you're getting a skilled player who is going to work his tail off and bring a ton of passion and enthusiasm to your team. Plus some leadership from the playoff runs he's made.

The guy brings it in the biggest games. When the chips are down, he plays his best. So many huge goals in the playoffs - more than Stepan or Nash or almost anyone else.

You guys will absolutely love Brassard.

Huge fan of Mika, but this makes a ton of sense.

Left handed centre, (Last year we had 4 righty centres in Turris, Zibanejad, Pageau and Lazar),that should put up 60 points or so.

Mika likely gets a contract around 5M next season, which is fine, but when you have White and Brown in the pipeline, along with the need to re-sign Turris in 2 seasons, it would have been hard to swallow.

Local boy is a bonus.

Why are you surprised? Brassard is quite a bit better. He's an excellent player and a premier second liner. I'm surprised we didn't get another pick, frankly (a 3rd or so), as well.

He is not quite a bit better than Zibanejad. You'll see soon enough. Good trade for the Rangers.

Brassard
Turris
Pageau

With Colin White and Logan Brown coming up through the ranks, the Sens now seem fairly deep at center.

As a Sens fan it sucks losing Zibby, but the thought of having a Brassard/Turris one-two punch down the middle is pretty encouraging.

Why does Ottawa want to get older? They aren't a Cup contender.

It's a business. Teams first want to become playoffs contenders, before they become cup contenders. Teams make money just by getting in the playoffs. And that's important, especially for a budget team that uses the Canadian dollar.

As for the trade, I only know Brassard, became a pretty good player once he joined the Rangers.

Another move like this and he should be fired :help:

Originally read this as Stepan and for Zibanejad and a 2nd, but since it's for Brassard I'd say the Rangers won this trade.

Makes sense for the Sens considering the Phaneuf trade. Brassard is better then Zibanejad for sure. And he's a local

I think this a good move for both teams. I feel like Rangers got the slight edge though with the 2nd (despite it being in '18). Lateral move.

I'd imagine the sens hope to make a few more moves after acquiring an older more expensive player though

Feels kinda even. Yeah Zibby is younger but Brassard can carry a heavier workload. Maybe trading some future for win now in Ottawa? With White and Brown as prospects maybe Ottawa feltthey could afford this?

Brassard has a very cheap contract for the kind of player he is and we just paid out the rest of his signing bonuses.

Probably had something to do with it.

This. It's clearly a money move on the Sens part. NYR already paid Brassard $2M in signing bonus, so Ottawa is only paying Brassard $3M this year, and then $3.5M the next two seasons.

You can debate the trade, or debate if Brassard is a low end 1C or high end 2C etc... all you want but no matter what $3.5M is a steal for Brassard's production.

I'm not even going to comment on the trade itself, but I feel bad for Ottawa fans that it seems every move the team makes is purely financial and money saving, sometimes to the detriment of the team.

That's the opposite of Zibby, basically.

I like Zibby, but he's inconsistent becuase of his work ethic, not his skill.

Some games he just doesn't give it. When he does give it he's a very skilled player though.

I'm not getting the "NYR saved cap space angle". Zibanejad is likely going to be getting $5m or more in 2017-18, so any savings here are just for this season, when all the prime UFA's have already signed.

Ottawa gets Brassard at a real $ cost of $3m, $3.5m and $3.5m That's not bad at all.

As someone who doesn't love the trade, this is really encouraging. :)

How does this affect Brassard production going forward?

He's going to be playing with 2 of Stone, Ryan, Hoffman and MacArthur. My bet would be Stone and Hoffman, or Ryan and Hoffman to start.

Plus he's going to have Karlsson playing with him half his shifts. I think his production will be fine.
