Wow, it looks like Ottawa is putting a lot more stock into what happens over the next couple of seasons.

Don't like the 2nd being thrown in. The player exchange makes some sense for Ottawa though. Needed a lefty center, playmaker and he's posted some good postseasons. I think Zibanejad has a good future ahead of him, but it doesn't look like Ottawa wanted to wait for that peak.

This is a Melnyk deal. When I say the deal I went straight to Fanager. Brassard's contract is front loaded. 5m this year, 3.5m the next 2. Zib is gonna make more than that on his next contract

His signing bonuses were paid off three days ago. It was definitely a Melnyk deal.

Fair deal. Zibby is more into DJing and has shown up fat to camp every year. He is also going to get a raise next year. Decent player though. 60 pt ceiling.

I'm not a massive fan of either of these players. Anyone expecting Zibanejad to take another step or two will probably be disappointed.

I'm a bit surprised Sens had to throw in a second round pick in this trade, seeing as Rangers were the ones getting cap relief here.

Why are you surprised? Brassard is quite a bit better. He's an excellent player and a premier second liner. I'm surprised we didn't get another pick, frankly (a 3rd or so), as well.

Does Ottawa management think they're a Cup contender? Value aside, seems odd to get older when you're a middle of the pack team who could just as likely end up back in the lottery as they could finish 8th.

Yeah im not crazy about the 2nd being thrown in there. I'd feel much better if this were a straight swap or a lesser pick were involved. But we all tend to overvalue picks around here, so what do I know really.

At the end of the day, Ottawa got more consistent down the middle, and hopefully Brassard will find better chemistry with some of Ottawa's wingers than Zibby did. Hell he could start the season with Stone and Hoffman on his wing. That aint bad.

Brassard is a bonafide 1st line center who's dynamite on the PP. Pretty consistent and is good for roof shattering celebrations.

He will be very sorely missed here.

I mean he was only there for 3 seasons and wasn't even drafted by NY

And....?

He was arguable our best player over that 3 year span he was here. And, the guy had balls and showed alot of heart and passion as a Ranger.

Trade value aside, it sucks to see this guy go.

Says the guy with a Brassard avi and title of "BrassGod"

Denial is a *****

He was a huge part of our team. It is quite ignorant to say he can't be a fan favorite after only being here for a few years. He instantly became a fan favorite and was huge for us in our cup run.

Now that my emotions have subsided, I think this was a good deal for us. We get younger, we clear capspace and we get a 2nd rounder. Brassard scored 58 last year. Zibanejad scored 51. The 7 points are negligible when you consider the cap space that we gained as well as getting younger and a 2nd.

This was a very smart deal for us.

That good on the powerplay eh? Im glad to hear it. Ottawa needs help bad on the predictable 'everything through Karlsson' powerplay. Another area where Zibby struggled big time.
