I think people are really underrating Ottawa as a team.

They are extremly solid in their top 6 and top 4. Oh and they have this kid named Erik Karlsson.

Ottawa's biggest issues for the last 3 years have been not having a good top 4.We have one now, and also potential top pairing d-man in Thomas Chabot coming up.

I think its fair and actually like the deal for both teams, short term Sens win and long term Rangers win.

Dorion got owned here.

Brassard is the better player today, but the Sens aren't a Brassard away from anything special.

Gave up on a good, controlled young asset for no good reason.

This is my take on it too. Brassard doesn't bring much that Zibanejad wasn't going to anyways.

What the hell were the Sens thinking???

Only a 7 point difference last season and Zib were finally starting to come into his own - and they trade him for a much older player who has pretty much met his peak already?

****ing idiots.

As a Sens fan I'm really disappointed we traded Zibanejad.

He's a big, fast, rugged centre with a huge shot (Clocked at 106 MPH). When Turris went down last season, Zibanejad took over the #1 C spot and put up 20 points in his last 20 games of the season. I think Zibanejad would've put 60 points in a Sens jersey as soon as next season.

If we take a look at advanced stats we also see that Zibanejad had better Corsi Rel (1.2) than Brassard (-0.8) which is not all that reassuring if you ask me. I think Brassard is the better player today, but I don't think he's better by much.

I think the Rangers will win this trade in the long run, right now it's fairly close. I think Ottawa made the trade because Zibanejad didn't really have much chemistry with our wingers. With Colin White, Logan Brown, Filip Chlapik and even Nick Paul coming sooner than later, Ottawa made a commitment to getting better right now and I do like that but the age difference is quite big and the question will really become how much better will Ryan/Stone and Hoffman/MacArthur be with a guy like Brassard.

I'm shocked Ottawa added here. Yeah Brass is better right now but Mika is just as skilled. Also yeah Brassard is a great guy and OTT will love him, but I'd rather have the guy who has more potiental and younger.

I hate giving up the 2nd, but it's obvious that it was to compensate for the Rangers taking on the extra couple million. Had the Sens taken on those dollars, it wouldn't have been a 2nd. Basically using our draft picks as currency - the internal budget strikes again!

Just goes to show the asset-management benefits of frontloading contracts for teams that can afford to do it.

Why do the Sens do this? seems like a very very minor upgrade in terms of offense and overall game for a player 5 years older and more expensive?

Not actually more expensive, and you're getting the better overall player (and someone who takes being a pro athlete seriously).

Just speculation for me, but I think Ottawa was willing to trade away some upside (the chance that Zibby really pops in a year or two is the only thing they're giving up) for a better character player.

Brassard will cost them 10 million for the next 3 years. Zibanejad maybe cost controlled but he will cost more than that for next three seasons. There's actually more to it than just money as well. Brassard is a playmaking left hand centre. Ottawa's top 3 C's were right handed, to go along with Stone and Ryan. I liked Zibanejad and this year will be an important year for him, he really needs to sort out his consistently but he was never much of a playmaker. Bobby Ryan took on that role and while he is capable, he is better off being a shooter.

Ottawa gets better, but how much better? Marginally, IMO. I remember what it was like cheering for a team that always treads water. Purgatory for a fan. You have to hope for a miracle.

I like Brassard and he's easily a better player then Zib right now but I for sure wouldn't of made this trade considering their ages and that the sens actually traded down like 5 rounds in the draft, terrible trade.

its a fair trade but one that doesn't really make sense for the team...Rangers need to win now, sens aren't gonna win anything anytime soon..i dunno.
