Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] G Igor Shesterkin signs extension with the Rangers (8 years, $11.5m AAV)

Right. But it's proveably way more predictable than 'find an elite goalie and pay him millions over 8 years'.
how is it more "predictable"? The Avs cheaped out on goaltending and they've gotten what they paid for. If you cheap out on goaltending, you have to hide it, which is not so straightforward because elite defensemen on solid cap hits aren't just floating out there if you don't already have them locked up.

But they don't. That's the problem. GMs allocate cap space to goalies like they can predictably rely on them to 'steal' games, but they never win on that bet.
I agree, but your premise I responded to was that goalies aren't important enough.
You're moving the goalposts at this point.

Just about everyone would want a Shesterkin in their crease nightly; whether they want to commit to his contract is the only question.

I watched a guy that fit that description named Niemi win a cup.
But the Hawks had a good goaltender in Crawford the next two Cups. They were pretty lucky to win with Niemi, who wasn't that good, but they were also very deep that year as Kane and Toews were on ELCs, and Keith was on a bridge deal that was basically an ELC. It's not a sustainable path for a team once they have key players that hit UFA contract year.

Don’t forget the Avs and the Knights constantly swapping to find a hot hand. But yeh you’re paying for consistency and reliability with Shesty. I just dont think that’s worth nearly 12M and it’s not like Shesty is putting up a consistant .940+ every year. He himself isn’t a sure fire bet.
If he was putting up a consistent .940+ every year, he'd be getting a max 20% contract.

Hope to hear more alfie music at the end of the game with this horrendous contract. I really thought the savings the rags got from trouba contract would go to help upfront or backend. Relieved. This is a albatross of a deal and any slip up by shesty the fans are gonna get the pitchforks. 11.5 aav wowsers!😮

A consistently year over year top 12 goaltender is the equivalent of a consistently year over year top line player that gives you top line production or top pair defenseman that gives top pair production.

12/64 goaltenders = 18.75 percentile, equivalent to a top 72 forward, equivalent to a top 36 defenseman. It's like John Tavares of Goaltending production to get that. Obviously you hope to get a bit more if you're paying out a big UFA contract, like top 5 production... but if people can say "Tavares is a bit overpaid but still a good player" they should be able to assess a goaltender in a similar way.

All the “goalies don’t matter” people in shambles.

It was a fair compromise for player and team. Igor wanted a little above 11.5 and the Rangers wanted to probably keep it below like 11, so everyone has to give a little to get a deal.

He would’ve gotten way more than 11.5 on the open market, but it might’ve not been a good fit or for the team he wanted to play for.

In the end this is a win/win for both sides. Terrific.

Your roster is trash. He is a fine player and maybe worth the contact, but it does not allow NYR to allocate money to actually improve the roster around him. Congrats on keeping him !

Shambles? Have the Rags won a Cup I wasn’t aware of?

That’s an exaggeration. When the contract starts it’ll be the tied for the 7th largest contract in the league.

I am a Rangers fan and I don’t believe he is worth this kind of money. Yes, he is a great goalie. But goaltending alone does not win you a Cup. Not in today’s NHL at least.

The other issue is he will turn 29 this year. So when he is 34 , 35, 36, and 37 this deal is going to look even worse than it does today …and it doesn’t look great even today.

I agree but Drury was in a tough spot. I am a hockey fan first and an Islander fan second. Some of my best friends are Ranger fans and most are on the fence about it. Certainly carries risk as well as reward.

Mentioned this like hundred times here already but Florida built the team they have around basically the same contract in Bobrovsky. Stop acting like spending 10% of cap on goaltending prohibits you from building a winning team.

Even Vasilevsky's contract was 11.6% of the cap and he was a damn RFA.

I don’t know what to think of the deal .
How can you let a goalie this good go ? But using that much cap on a goalie is not ideal either. I guess it’s the old argument - Does an elite goalie make you a better team than an average / cheaper one ? You can have better skater depth with the average priced goalie . Having an extra 5 /6 mil to use on another skater or two might win more games than having a goalie that only plays at the most 60 games a year . I guess it all comes down to if the elite goalie can steal yuu games in the playoffs and I think Shesh has that ability .
There are examples of both . Teams with elite , high priced goalies winning the cup ( Panthers with Bobs 10+ mil cap hit ) , and then there is the Avs and their bargain bin priced goalies
