Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] G Igor Shesterkin signs extension with the Rangers (8 years, $11.5m AAV)

Shesh is an amazing goalie . Don’t get me wrong. Nothing to do with the player , it’s to do about paying that much on the goaltending position . He can only play so much . He plays maybe 60 games a year plus playoffs ( if they make it ). And I dint think an elite goalie is that much of an impact over a “ good” goalie .
However , that can change in a hurry come playoffs if he can steal games / series .
Would it be better to pay less on a good goalie and upgrade on D or a forward or two ? Who knows . I personally think I’d rather have the good goalie and better depth than an elite goalie

Fabulous goalie and he can very well steal you a series or two the question is the team in front of him gonna be good enough in the future, sure they certainly have a few solid pieces.
I guess time will tell congrats on keeping him in the fold.

The worst take in sports is that the goalie is the most important player on a team.

Ask the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights (and their fans or media) to rank their most important players, see how high up the list their goalies are.

Do the same for the Blackhawks or the Penguins. The Red Wings before them.

I could go back to the 80s Oilers.
We don’t have to go back 40 years, recent history shows that you can pay your goalies like a top skater. Vasy, Price, Bob. In 2021 the stanley cup final featured the two highest paid goalies ffs.

And for everyteam that won a Cup with average goaltending that got hot, there is 10 that lost their shot at a Cup due to average goaltending going cold.

Goalie has always been the most important position in the playoffs, how could it not be? Which other position can completely take over a game, good, or bad?

Florida surrounded Bob with a lot of great depth scoring and defenders. All of whom play with an edge.

You think Drury or any other Rangers GM is going to be able to do what Zito did? Get real.

They offered it a few months ago. He turned it down

If he relented and accepted with *NO* clauses that bar trades, demotions, buy outs, benchings, charity night exclusions, a bowl of only red M&M's every game...

Then whatever, its a win I guess.

Just please. For the love of God. No more movement clauses. These players need motivation to be their best when dollars are raining like, well, water.

11.5M is a ton of money, but I think it's fine as long as the contract is not a buy-out proof anchor like Price's was.

I'd assume some sort of trade protection is involved. Not many 8 figure contracts are signed without it. Also, this contract appears to be about a half a million a year more than the one offered in the summer.

He’s 1st or 2nd in every major goalie category among starters the last five seasons (Win%, SV%, GAA). And his numbers are even better in the playoffs over a not insignificant 44 playoff starts where he has a 0.928 SV% - which would be an insane season in itself, except that’s what he does when all the chips are on the line. And that includes three different playoff runs of 7, 16 and 20 games where he was 0.931, 0.927 and 0.929. So it’s not like just one magically playoff run. It’s just what he does. Every. Time.

Anybody sorting “24-25” stats and saying “oh geez he’s not even a top goalie, his save% is only 0.908 through a quarter of the season” is either an idiot or being purposefully obtuse.

For all the folks saying “you can’t pay a goalie because they are too wildly variable from year to year”…this IS the goalie you can justify that for because he IS that goalie every year of his career so far, including being even better every single playoff run.

If they gave a goalie a cap strung contract till he's 37/38 and movement clauses too after the PITA BS Trouba put them through and the inuendos Kreider and Zibanejad keep dropping then they deserve the headaches they get and they deserve the fans like myself that will/may eventually walk away when we get sick of watching players mail in seasons and power pout coaches away every two years.

We want wins. Not retirement homes.

Everyone kills the Rangers for their decades of Mercenary contract malcontents, but now we are reaching an era where because of The Cap and Parody, every team is facing piss poor attitudes from these millionaire brats that just want to play pond hockey and hold their teams hostage with immovable clauses that kill any leverage coaches or GMs have to effectively build and manage winning teams.

Its a bastardized version of the hockey i grew up loving.

No heart. Just, pay me, punch in, punch out, go home. 9 to 5 clock watching Office Space hockey.

For reference:

When Bobrovsky's 10M contract debuted in 19-20, he was eating 12,27% of the cap.

If the cap stayed the same next year, Shesterkin would eat 13,07% of the salary mass all by himself. But the cap is very likely going up.

To get in the ballpark of Bobrovsky's deal, percentage-wise, the cap needs to be around 93,5M in 25-26.

That would be an increase of 5,5M for the cap, a number the league will likely surpass.

lol 11.5 million for a goalie is insane idc how good he is will never live up to that contract

We are screwed
If Shesterkin leaves the Rangers are no longer a playoff team for years to come. They didn't really have an option.
With that cap they will have to fill the team with young players with low contracts because they contract is gonna kill them and there ability to get better players

Wasn't that long ago, but I remember Bobby Holik and Scotty Gomez as Rangers. Although,I don't know your age.

Not a Rangers fan, but given the way the team is built, I don't mind this signing.

Hellebuyck is a steal
Def, but let's say the cap is upped to 97m within 2 seasons, he'd already be the equivalent cap% wise to what Hellebuyck is today, I'm pretty sure.

Shesterkin is 2+ years younger. Of course if Hellebuyck is still elite at 33-35 he'll be but a drop in the bucket and even more of a steal.

Is what it is, last season's Cup winning goalie is being paid 10m and the cap's going up a good margin here fairly soon.

Price took the Habs to the finals
Bob has a cup win

They were making right around the same % of the cap

Shesty's absolute bottom is 10 mill, whether the Rangers saved 1-1.5 million makes very little difference to their team. Especially when Shesty has proven he can single handedly win games, the likelihood of a player even 2-4 million (forget 1-2 mill that people wanted to nickle and dime him over) ever winning team games is very very low.

The best players get paid and not only is he one of the best in the season, he is arguably the best in the playoffs.

It's not going to kill them. It's $3M more than the absolute lowest you possible argue he should get ($8.5M). That's a single $3M dollar player.

All it does is raise the degree of difficulty a tad. Only a tad.

Shesterkin is great and all but $11.5??? Really? That’s $2 million more then Vasi and $3 million more then Hellebyuck. That is a bad contract.
