Confirmed Signing with Link: [NYR] G Igor Shesterkin signs extension with the Rangers (8 years, $11.5m AAV)

Defence wins cups, not the goaltending. Vegas, Colorado, stlouis, Florida, had likely the best d core in their respective seasons when they won.

That's a lot for a goalie. Such deals have never been worth it in this league. Let's see if this will be.

“You can’t win a cup paying a goaltender too much!” - people who don’t realize how much cap Bobrovsky and Vasilevskiy were taking up when they won the Cup.

so we've established it can be done in perfect weather low tax states where players routinely take less to stay

meanwhile the Rangers have to pay Lafreniere almost as much as Sam Reinhart

I love Igor, but our cap situation is really unenviable. You have to get rid of Mika somehow... but he has an NMC for the next 50 years.

Pretty much guarantees we lose our young guys actually carrying the team like Kakko and Cuylle.

How many cups did he get you guys? And brodeur outplayed him in the playoffs when he was like 39 so yea…. miss me with that weak ass shit.
No he didn't lmao. Lundqvist was the only Ranger who showed up to that series. His 2 shutouts were the only games they won.

Best player on the team by a long shot but that’s rough. I guess if any goalie is worth that, it’s him.
With the league shifting towards even the best goalies starting 50 games a year, no goalie is worth that kind of contract. When you factor in Shesterkin’s age and the Rangers window, it makes it worse.

The cap is horrible, blaming players for the cap being horrible is dumb
Your boss comes to you in the morning and says "Hey Jimmy, we can't afford your raise right now because of our salary cap, sorry."
Stupid.

He got 4 million more than those who said he was stupid for turning down 11.
I was surprised how many people replied with comments like that. I couldn't imagine a scenario where a rough 8 game stretch by an entire team would cost their undoubtable MVP $$$.

Big money and big term are a guarantee for any team's best player. And there is no doubt who the Ranger's best player is.

And his save percentage in the playoffs is insane!

I have no problem with the $. It's just the term due to Shesterkin's age.

Lots of goaltenders go into their late 30's. They don't have the career timelines of forwards/defensemen.

Patrick Roy won a Cup at 35. He retired at 37 but that year he played 63 games with a 35-15-13 record--a 2.18 GAA and a .920 save %.

Martin Brodeur played until he was 43 and went to the Stanley Cup finals as a 40 year old starting goalie.

Dominik Hasek won his second Stanley Cup at 43 years old.

Henrik Lundqvist played until he was 38 and only retired because of a heart issue.

Roberto Luongo played until he was 40.

And there are a number of other goalies in the last 30/40 years who have played into their late 30's and early 40's.

Marc-Andre Fleury is 40 years old now. Jonathan Quick is 38. Sergei Bobrovsky is 36 and won the Cup last year at 35.

I don't think anyone here has a crystal ball and can say with any certainty that Igor will or not live up to this contract he signed particularly towards the end of it but it wouldn't really be all that surprising if he was still playing at a high level 8 years from now and FWIW the Rangers haven't been playing him 60/70 games regular season like most of the above did. He's more in the 55 range.

Considering he is the heart beat of the team good on him.

$1.5M more than what Bobrovsky signed for 5 years ago. It's not a death sentence to the Rangers at all.

Florida had their franchise players on contracts the Rangers don’t have

It’s going to be tough to be competive during this contract

Shisterkin is clearly as good as any other goalie in the league. Just not seeing the rest of the Rangers (especially their core) as equivalent to other top clubs’ cores. Shisterkin will need to be the reason they hang in there with the other top clubs.
