I'd agree, which is why I am not so sure he will sign an extension until a no trade/movement clause can be in effect.

Which I think can only be after he is on the NHL roster for 40 more game days.

Other than that he would have to trust the Rangers would not trade him before any clauses activated.

If think they are allowed to have that clause activate next season, but only after those 40 game days on roster.

By letting Wings and us talk to him they could've played us against each other and increase their return.

I could easily picture Gorts saying pick #20 and Pionk and not budge since you are not letting us talk to him.

I think the 1st round pick was a the differentiation between what a Detroit could offer versus the Rangers... and you also have the cap constraints Detroit has (lots of bad contracts). So I'm not sure how that helps drive up the price.

We haven't really talked about it much, but don't think for a minute that a significant factor in getting Trouba was the impact/benefit for a guy like Skjei.

So there's the elements of what the Rangers think Trouba can do, and then there's the trickle down effect.

Literally just thinking that before I read this.

Lighten his load and I may like him going forward more than I did yesterday.

I think this ^^^ is a significant factor that influenced how things went down.

Also consider that that like the Rangers with a pick in the 4-9 range, Winnipeg spent considerable time scouting players they felt would be on the board in the 20s. So there are guys there that they like. Getting the 20th pick back was going to be more attractive to them.

His agent is not going to mess with us. This is where the kid wants to be. Totally different than trying to force way out of Winnipeg for years.

We’ll get him on a good contract for both sides. I just hope we get max 8 years on it. Kid’s a stud

Yeah, they’re either paired together or Skjei is on the second pair, which is what we’ve all wanted

This is an example of why I've never liked using Edmonton, Colorado, etc. as examples.

The Rangers will have the resources to make moves and sign players, and New York will remain an attractive option for a lot of players.

Very few players put Carolina, or Columbus, or Winnipeg, or Edmonton, etc. on their short lists. New York typically is. That's our competitive advantage. And we will use it.

Looks like Trouba disagrees

Can't do 8.

Exactly, WPG drafts well and this will give them another asset to bring forward.

There is also a Duluth connection with Pionk, one of WPG's top prospects know him well. Dylan Samberg is going to play in the NHL, there is a connection there as well.

Would the comps for the contract be Fowler/Dumba/Ekblad? If Ekblad got 8 for 7.5, you would think Trouba can get 8M for 7, or 7.5M for 6 years?

You also see the focus on how they want to build a team:

Players with familiarity/comfort with one another

Guys who fill specific roles, even the unheralded ones

Higher end talent, supported by core worker bees

Balance and a focus on chemistry and combos

A snarl to their game, tough to play against (I've said for years its a mindset)

Finding prospects who have better odds of putting it all together post-draft, and finding young NHL'ers who are on the cusp of hitting that next level.
