I think they're going to take a very long look at Skjei and Trouba together and see how it plays out. I think they've been theorizing about that one for 7 years now. We'll see what happens though.

I think the real question will be whether to split them up, might be better to balance out the rest of the Defense than keep them together. But yes, they've been waiting to try this out for awhile and they have played together before.

He's been trying to force his way out of Winnipeg for 3-4 years now. He didn't force their hand to trade him to NY to come in and lay out demands he has no idea if they'll meet.

I'm sure a deal will get done. Not at all worried.

It's an interesting question for sure. I think many of those unknowns will be revealed as we see how Hajek, ADA, Fox, Miller, etc. come along.

Depth and options in the face of uncertainty are wonderful weapons to possess.

Would the comps for the contract be Fowler/Dumba/Ekblad? If Ekblad got 8 for 7.5, you would think Trouba can get 8M for 7, or 7.5M for 6 years?

Ekblad's contract was his 2nd, right after his ELC. Completely different. I think the Burns contract signed in 2011 is a good comparison. With a 8.96CH% that would come down to ~7.25m for Trouba.

Only thing that sucks is I wanted Seider bad. But that likely wont be happening now

Why do we need him now? Trouba, ADA, Fox are already NHL players or very close. There's Nils and Keane in the pipeline. Shattenkirk to hold the fort in case Fox needs Hartford time or ADA regresses. I think we're fine for another 5-6 years minimum. I would draft RHDs in later rounds, like Keane, but there are more pressing needs with picks in the first two rounds.

I endorse this trade and the people behind it.....

If top D are getting 10-12 mil, i can see Trouba going for about 9
I dont think Trouba is near Top D level. I dont know if he will ever get to that “level.” That is elite status. He has been a solid defenseman thus far in his career. I think $7 million x 6-7 years is fair

What are the more pressing needs? They have stocked up at a lot of the positions. RHD is a high in demand position.

Of course if they trade into the top 12-15 then I think they focus on the center position.

But to question why they would need Seider? Have you seen our defense? You build from the net out. You establish your a strong defense and focus on the center position. Wings last imo. Centers can always slide to the wing. But you can never have enough D. You mention Lundkvist and Keane. Miller. Those kids arent here yet. They are not depth until they are established. Heck, Fox isnt even here yet. Can never have enough defense in the system.

Given the market and his past history, I’m expecting a bit more for Trouba. We cannot sign him to an 8 year deal until next July, so I’ll guess we get him for 7 years between $7.85M and $8.35M.

It’s a huge investment, but Gorton said he had his ballpark for the contract, so I’m sure he’s comfortable paying the price. Maybe heavier movement clauses can bring the price down a bit to the $7.75M range?

Part of me says give him 7 (since that's the max) but the other part of me thinks about Staal...

I'd still happily take him but he most likely wasn't going to be there are 20. and I think if we traded up it would have been for a center. seider is one of my favorite guys in the draft but i'd given up any hope of landing him...i'd say after getting trouba the biggest need is another top center but you can never have too many good dmen

But that would increase their return. Teams will give up more if they believe a player wants to talk an extension.

Yeah, it don't quite add up, unless maybe there is only 1-2 teams there and those teams can figure that out themselves.

trouba wears a visor...so a puck to the eye is unlikely

Staal was 3 years older when he signed and his 6-year contract takes him to 34. A 7 year deal would take Trouba to 32.

As for the player specifically, there's always a risk that Trouba will have injuries that diminish him as a player like Staal did. But that risk literally exists for every player.

Judging by Gortons comments after the trade, it seems they have everything and more figured out with Trouba, additional moves and the rest of the D situation going into the season.

The confidence and assertiveness that Gorton and the rest of the front office has displayed lately is pretty damn incredible to me. They are putting in WORK and are getting shit DONE.

Win or lose you gotta be happy as a fan. Mainly because they have a PLAN and are executing it flawlessly right now. The years of Slats I felt there was very little foresight and planning and that became a big problem for the club at times.

Luckily they were able to get out of it with the amnesty buy-outs and AHL loopholes, but if not for that it could've been a disaster we may not have been able to climb out of for a lot longer.

THIS.

The, "not allowed to talk to him" thing is total BS.

There's no way in hell the Rangers traded the #20 pick in an uber-deep draft for 1 year of notoriously difficult Jacob Trouba, if they weren't 100% sure he's not going to sign a long-term deal. That contract is as good as signed.
