Doubtful, they've wanted this guy for a long time.

RHD went from a **** show to a strength this summer. We're a frequent Staal scratching/buyout away from icing a pretty good defense.

Staal should be out when he actually gets outplayed by one of Hajek Lindgren or Rykov. Hes still significantly better than Claesson and Smith.

He called the Rangers as the front runners for Trouba and we got Trouba. Lay the hell off the guy Jesus. He's the only decent beat writer this team has that actually reports rumors. Of course they aren't always going to happen but he does his work.

And in fairness, how many people would dare have floated Pionk+20 for Trouba on this board or the Jets board?

The ridicule and backlash would’ve been a nightmare for that poor soul.

Chevy would be the one to grant, or not, the right to talk to Trouba and his agent. I'm not sure Chevy really knows what Trouba wants, other than to not be in Winnipeg.
Right. I read that as him not allowing us to talk to Trouba beforehand as to not scare us away.

It is a deal so bad that even I would have said "hell, I'll gladly take Trouba for that".

pionk just was the victim of being a righty on a team with ADA and shatty.

once fox deal was done, as most here said, the writing was on the wall.

ADA
shatty
fox

all better than pionk. not his fault, but seems playing him a lot and having him make some noise early perhaps helped us create value there. he's cheap, hes a minute monster and hes got some wheels. he can't play defense worth a lick but hes not without talent. hes not a top pair guy as we well know.

winy didn't want any part of jakes next deal and was between a rock and hard spot. i think they did well actually without any real leverage. 20th and pionk isn't a bad deal at all. 20 affords a chance to grab a decent player.

keep in mind, winy has some high end prospects. they are loaded with top end kids ready to make the jump from manitoba.

good luck too neal. and welcome jake to nyc. alls been one of my legit targets for us to upgrade the D quickly. hes a very good player and paired with brady makes for a potentially all american terrific 1st pair.

I think the market for Shatty is probably an equally ugly contract but at forward. Corey Perry still comes to mind since the Ducks need a RHD who can run a PP.
I would do that swap plus a few minor tweaks. Perry isn’t the same player he once was but he could definitely be a role model for the young forwards and provide snarl. Perry is a dick.

Was very against trading for Trouba but at this price it is more than acceptable. I just hope he extends for something reasonable.

Holy ****

Could no one else beat that return?

All hail Jeff

Beat? Yes.

I suspect there was a fear component of not being able to talk turkey with his agent.

I further suspect the Rangers didn’t have that fear, and are confident they can sign him.

A third factor, is this board’s underestimating how Pionk is viewed around the league. The kid had significantly more value than many believed.

Ummmm.

Just saw a breaking news notification. Saw Trouba and Rangers and closed it immediately.

Put my head down and said a small prayer. First saw #20 and honestly I got a little disappointed because I’ve been jonesing to see who would fall to us there but then I saw Pionk and nothing else and...

After I saw the tweet about no conditionals I had to smack myself in the face and pinch myself to wake up.

I guess Gorts found the Chloroform that Slats hid when he used on Gainey in 09’

Good news is we'll figure out exactly where he's at with that RFA contract.

I mean small sample sizes and all, but he's been outplayed by Hajek in every game Hajek has skated in at the NHL level.

He's not better than either of the other 2 you mentioned either. His on ice effects were the worst on the team by a lot.

Skjei
Hajek
Staal
Smith

Would be amazing to tie something to smith and get rid of his entire cap hit.

I disagree. But, we shall see.

@Inferno and I were leading the anti-Trouba train. Mostly because I thought the price to acquire him would be exorbitant. You can't get everything you want so considering the price we paid in a trade, If he ends up being $8-8.5, I won't be that upset.
@Gardner McKay @Inferno I diced with both of you on Trouba and you were both professional and intelligent in your responses. I enjoy those kind of interactions.

There are a few posters on the roster building thread who took to trashing Trouba for no reason. I cant wait to see them crawling back.

It is a deal so bad that even I would have said "hell, I'll gladly take Trouba for that".

The Jets board would’ve booted one of us for trolling. And no one on here, except maybe one or two people, would’ve had the cajones to go that direction.

Fox, Trouba, Nils in the pipeline. Don't think it would happen since I doubt a team would offer what he's worth. Would you trade ADA/ Kreider for the Oiler pick? Not sure I would but maybe Gorton wants back in the first round?

Who is sitting there at 8?

Should be mentioned that Kreider has limited no trade protection and Edmonton is almost for sure on that list.

Not gonna lie. I love the idea of Perry mentoring Lemieux in real-time night after night.

On a more practical note, the Rangers have shown they want gritty guys in the lineup and it's unrealistic to expect Lemmy to shoulder that by himself. (Though adding Trouba to the blue line helps that) Additionally, if they move Kreider, they'll lose some size up front and a very good net-front presence on the PP. Perry would replace at least a little bit of that.

Nils is still 2-3 years away from the NHL. Trouba on the top pair, ADA on the 2nd, and Fox on the 3rd. Absolutely zero reason to trade him right now. Kreider can go for another 1st.
