While there is no shortage of credit for Gorton right now, let's also remember that he signed Pionk as a college FREE AGENT. No acquisition cost.

That's big boy management!
Same with Hayes. Incredible we basically got Trouba and Lemieux for nothing. That is a way to speed up a rebuild. (Albeit I am pretty sure that was Sather who signed Hayes)

Not only is the value on this trade way better than I ever imagined, we avoided a whole summer of “aggressively seeking Trouba” albeit it’s a great name.

That would surprise me. The Rangers have, thus far, seen him as a valuable long-term investment.
I'm going to have trouble ever liking the guy unless he undergoes a significant personality change, but I absolutely recognize how well he was developing over the 2nd half of last year, and I can see why they would be loath to trade him. Certainly it makes no sense just to clear a logjam. He's far too valuable.

(Likewise, I like Pionk, but he obviously struggled over the second half of the season. Frankly, I'm amazed they were able to acquire Trouba giving up only him; I thought for sure Skjei or ADA would be included – perhaps both.)

That said, with Keane and Lundkvist coming in the pipeline, and Fox now in the fold, there isn't room for everyone. And while we obviously have yet to see Fox play a single pro game,I have difficulty seeing ADA beating him out long-term. It may not happen this year, but I can certainly see ADA getting moved for value at another position at some point down the line. Especially since he'll start to be increasingly expensive soon. Only makes sense from an asset allocation POV.

Who is sitting there at 8?

Should be mentioned that Kreider has limited no trade protection and Edmonton is almost for sure on that list.
To play with McDavid for a season to pump up his stats so he can get a huge contract after next year? I doubt Kreider would object to going to the Oilers for a year..

Ummmm.

Just saw a breaking news notification. Saw Trouba and Rangers and closed it immediately.

Put my head down and said a small prayer. First saw #20 and honestly I got a little disappointed because I’ve been jonesing to see who would fall to us there but then I saw Pionk and nothing else and...

After I saw the tweet about no conditionals I had to smack myself in the face and pinch myself to wake up.

I guess Gorts found the Chloroform that Slats hid when he used on Gainey in 09’

I had serious doubts. I went to NHL.com, saw nothing. Then I texted a few friends while checking the site. The 1-2 confirmation was almost immediate.

I feel like Gorton is Randy from southpark right now... you know, the episode where he had to carry his cajones around in a wheelbarrow.

Hahaha or doing the hulk hogan in the middle of the match. Expecting more to go down.

If he trades out the pending ufa forwards for picks and signs current UFAs, then he call another presser to just do what Randy did

Yeah. I had no interest in Trouba but at this price who can complain? All of the guys I was hoping for at #20 are mocking such that they won’t be available, so I’m not going to cry over that pick other than this probably limits their ability to move up.

This looks like a really good trade.

The Jets board would’ve booted one of us for trolling. And no one on here, except maybe one or two people, would’ve had the cajones to go that direction.
I went on the Jets board a couple of times to discuss Trouba and they couldn't have been nicer to me. I sort of feel bad for them.

Not really.

Nils is still 2-3 years away from the NHL. Trouba on the top pair, ADA on the 2nd, and Fox on the 3rd. Absolutely zero reason to trade him right now. Kreider can go for another 1st.
He can go for another first but probably not a top 7/8/9 pick on his own. Yes Nils is definitely 2-3 years away.

Maybe..but if ADA starts racking up 50 point seasons, along with good defensive play and physical toughness...they will move someone else.

He called the Rangers as the front runners for Trouba and we got Trouba. Lay the hell off the guy Jesus. He's the only decent beat writer this team has that actually reports rumors. Of course they aren't always going to happen but he does his work.
Sure he’s our only legit beat but that doesn’t mean I can’t call him out for his speculation being incredibly off base. I’ll always read Brooks but his gauging is the potential price was wildly off base.

This is the situation that you want to be in though.

Either he plays his way into being a mainstay or he gets passed by someone else on the depth chart and is used as a piece to either restock the system or fill another hole.

Win-Win.
