I disagree that he's much of an upgrade at all outside of physicality and strongly disagree it's a "huge" upgrade. Kampfer has always been a 6/7 swingman throughout his career and McQuaid is nothing more than a 6th defenseman at this point. He adds nothing offensively and struggles to get the puck out of his own zone.

I don't like giving up the 4th when we should be focused on stockpiling youth, but it's moot if we're able to flip him for a 3rd come the trade deadline.

I agree he isn't a huge upgrade, but he's an upgrade.

Kampfer has played 160 NHL games and is getting ready to turn 30. The reality is that he's a bubble NHL player and probably more of a AAAA player than the 6-7 swingman we'd like him to be.

I think a 4th is a reasonable cost to upgrade the depth.

I don't know if he necessarily brings back a third at the deadline, but he could bring back a 4th or a fifth. So the pick probably isn't going to be a factor long-term.

I'm fine with this trade.

BTW, when was the last time Gordie Clark and Co. hit on a 4th round pick?

Maybe Shestyorkin?

Weise in 2008, Pyatt in 2005, Callahan in 2004.

So there is some precedent for finding players there.

But I think we seem to forget that McQ probably brings back a pick at the deadline as well.

If it means that chicken**** McLeod is gone, then I’ll he happy. Seriously, **** Cody McLeod.
I still believe that Mcleod will be in the line up on the 4th line. I also believe that McQuaid is a solid third pairing defensemen. He can lead in locker room. He can be moved at the deadline when try contenders try to add depth and grit. Nothing wrong with the trade.

And frankly if ADA or Pionk cannot play better than him, then why are we even discussing them?

See, I get this argument, but every pick is a lottery ticket, and the more you have, the more of a chance to win. So throwing them away isn't the best strategy, although there is the chance to recoup at the deadline

That said, Shestyorkin, Weise, Callahan to name a few

Kampfer always seemed to play a couple of good games when he got back into the lineup and then fall to pieces with more usage.

I don't have anything to back that up, just what it seemed like.

Shestyorkin and that's about it. Graves was also a 4th rounder and he could still make it.

Gross was their latest 4th rounder, has some potential, but it's always a gamble

e: only went back to fairly recent picks, I'm not sure Clarke was running the draft when Callahan was picked? That was the Maloney days iirc

The only thing Kampfer really had at a NHL level were his wheels. He was a pretty good skating defenseman, in transition too.

Do you think those three are competing for two spots?

They did not make this trade to waive or continually scratch McQuaid.

He is likely the default 3rd pair RD.

Given Shattenkirk is a RD, that leave one spot for either ADA or Poink.

The options kind of become, send Poink to the AHL as he does not need to clear waivers, or waive ADA (or trade him but for what?)

This.

If Pionk and ADA cannot beat out McQ, that's a reflection on them.

It's also worth pointing out that if start the season with Shattenkirk, Pionk and ADA, we're starting the season with our RHD corps averaging a shade under 6'0 and 200 pounds. Which says nothing about that group being heavy on the puck moving, and light on a hell of a lot of other attributes.

might be worth considering the "leadership" aspect since it sounds like they were less than thrilled with the locker room leadership last year

for a team that was trying to contend I'd be worried, for a rebuilding team eh

Gorts has stated that he wants us to be a tough team to play against. The leadership core was too easy going. Bringing in a guy like this changes the dynamic a bit... Tough on the ice, great in the lockeroom (apparently).

I don't see the issue.

As others have stated, if the kids can't beat this guy out, they don't deserve to be in NY and should be in CT

It's also quite possible that if ADA or Pionk has an awful camp that they have a chance to phase McQ out. Though that would certainly not be the ideal scenario the Rangers are hoping for.

To your firsr point: just let me have this, please. I f***ing hate Cody McLeod. At least Glass was a likeable dude

To the rest, I don’t disagree. He’s definitely a legit tough guy and solid PK option for your 3RD/7D, and he has a history of being a true leader. I’m fine with that part.

I honestly don’t think McQuaid has any effect on them for the long-term outlook of this team tbh. I’m not sure how they plan on managing ADA and Pionk, but I’d prefer to find them both meaningful minutes. Pionk is waiver-eligible, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends a lot of time in the AHL this year, especially since Hartford has no RHD. I’m probably higher on ADA than most guys, and I think he should see NHL minutes this year. I’ve said that I wanted him to be paired with Skjei to see if they can build on their success as a pairing from last year. Maybe the team sees him as an option to play with Staal, similarly to how they used Dan Boyle.

beginning of the season is a pretty good time to be more flexible on who plays where and to help shakeout the lineup, so yeah you could see both ADA and Pionk with McQuaid as the 7th. I don't think the Rangers are going to let those guys go for nothing at this point...hell, they just acquired ADA a bit over a year ago. Even if they're disappointed with his development I don't think they're going to ditch him for nothing at this point.

I know the response is always, "well I guess young player XYZ is done for."

Gorton just made those remarks about how if a kid is ready, they're not going to keep him out of the lineup because a veteran is in his way. He literally just said that. I'm going to give Gorton the benefit of the doubt, that he's just hedging his bets, and that he'll really give the opportunity to the kids to make the team, and move older guys out if he has to.

I'll give it to December. That's enough time for kids to establish in Hartford or in limited minutes that they deserve a spot. If we get to that point and kids are pushing and we instead stick with the old guys, then I'll bring out the pitchfork.

Give a reasonable justification for your point of view, and I won't call it fleeing.
I think the FO and coaching staff are on the same page with how they view the team and the personnel. I don't think Quinn gets hired if that's not the case. I don't think the FO views McQuaid as a third pairing or 7th d-man. There are plenty of other more efficient ways to acquire these types of players that isn't targeting them in a trade and spending draft picks, inconsequential draft picks for sure, but draft picks nonetheless, in a rebuilding year.

I think the organization as a whole continues to place value in players like McQuaid. We see it every time. When we claimed McLeod last year, everyone was in the thread saying who cares, he's never going to play, and McLeod saw more > 10 TOI games here in 23 games than he did in the last two seasons combined before he came here. AND, the team went and re-signed him.

So, excuse my hesitation to believe this team thinks McQuaid is a third-pairing guy. I'm allowed to have that viewpoint, and I'll be more than happy to be wrong if he's not among the D leaders in toi/gp come October.

I don't think they traded for McQ with the plans on him being the healthy scratch often, or to just waive him.

Similarly for McL, they did not re-sign him just to waive or never play him although I think he will be scratched more often than McQ.

It's not a simple competition in my mind, they want some toughness in the line-up.

And it's not that I totally disagree with them, getting beaten on the score board and intimidated is a bad combination, it's just there is a trade off to making those moves. They want toughness, I am fine with that to an extent, but that means it's one less spot for a developing player as none of the developing players are going to provide them with that toughness they are searching for.

The rebuild is over. Now's the time we round out the roster with Vets.

On a more serious note, I love this trade. We'll get back more than a 4th. Great locker room guy. Tough. And is a decent player. There will always be a demand for RHD that can play. This is a gritty guy that teams will want during the deadline.

Gorts is on point.
