FWIW, I’ve talked to a few B’s fans who are sad they lost McQuaid. At this stage we need impact players (not necessarily game changers, just guys who can affect games in positive ways) and he provides more of that than Kampfer would. Tough as nails and a likable guy. We’ll get more than a 4th for him come deadline. Fine with this deal.

Not sure what to say about this one

Hoping they flip him at the deadline for more than a 4th a la Holden

Maybe Gorts felt bad about the Holden and Nash trades and decided to throw Sweeney a bone

Weird trade, but if we trade him at the deadline for more than a 4th, its not a bad trade.

Skjei-Shatty
Staal-Pionk
Smith-McQuaid
Claesson
Gilmour-ADA

I gotta think ADA is one of the big losers here. He was probably going to be above Kampfer, but I don't think we are trading for McQuaid to sit. I think ADA and Gilmour start the season on waivers, and hopefully they clear.

You have to play him to move him at the deadline for more than a 4th. Which means, in a rebuilding year, this guy is going to eat minutes that should be going to Pionk or ADA.

And we're all, for some reason, okay with this?

Not to even mention the fact that this FO continually slaps us in the face with the types of players that they covet, who are essentially shit players, and we all jump up and down with excitement.

I know I'm the crazy one, but I didn't think it was this bad.

I don't see McQuaid as an upgrade to Kampfer, to add a 4th round pick is bad asset management when we're supposed to be rebuilding. Adds some physicality I guess
He’s a HUGE uprade over Kampfer. Kampfer will never be a full time NHLer and Adam is 100x more physical and tough. Perfect bottom pair defensman.

Very happy with this minor trade.

I think a lot is going to be decided in camp though I also would not be surprised if Pionk is sent down at the start of the season because he's waiver exempt, even if he does well, since it gives them some flexibility. I think they'll give ADA a good chance unless he's bad in preseason and camp. They'll not just toss him away for nothing just 1 year after acquiring him in a relatively big deal.

I could also see McQuaid start as the 7th defenseman but I suspect the idea is that he'll be in and out of the lineup a fair amount

The timing (pretty much after Traverse) is what really gets me thinking here.

The more I think about it the more I think they really like what they've seen out of Hajek and plan on giving him 3LD, as long as he doesn't fall flat in preseason.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I could totally see it.

It's possible that they see Pionk/ADA/McQuaid as a 3-man rotation to start the season. Or they believe that Pionk could use a little more time to grow in the AHL vs the NHL to start the season.

I imagine it's frustrating but I think you perhaps are taking it a bit too personally.

But I guess we all get upset when we don't like how our favorite team does stuff

1.) There's no such thing as "minutes that should be going to Pionk or ADA." If they can't beat out Adam McQuaid, they aren't ready to play in the league full-time.
2.) There's nothing stopping Quinn from using McQuaid in some games and using another player in others, depending on how the young guys are doing. Roster deployment is different when you're rebuilding vs when you're trying to compete and it doesn't require having the same lineup game-in, game-out. You can more effectively use a rotation.
3.) Injuries are going to happen

Listen, I don't disagree with either of these takes.

But why can't we target someone who isn't terrible?

There's nothing wrong with Pionk being the #1RD in Hartford and being recalled at the trade deadline again. I've been pumping the kid's tires since before we signed him and I freely admit he has plenty of areas to improve upon.

You don't rebuild a team by forcing kids to play over their head due to a lack of options.

Chiming in from Boston, you won't find anybody with a bad word to say about McQuaid. He is the ultimate teammate, ferocious fighter. Solid bottom pairing, stay at home D. His game is what it is but he can still play. He will get hurt a few times each year, may play about 60 games because of that. And he will only be there for a year at most obviously. This was a cap move, $2.75m for a guy who wasn't going to be in their top 6. But the guy is genuinely loved by the fans. People are sad to see him go. His teammates will love him. And sadder that Kampfer is coming back, who sucked with the Bruins a few years back.

Personally I'd doubt it has anything to do with Traverse and performances there, usually these deals have been in the works for a little bit.

For whatever reason the Rangers are stockpiling D to some extent which honestly leads me to believe they're not particularly confident in the players they have. They've got basically 3 actual NHLers (Skjei, Staal, Shattenkirk) and a bunch of guys with question marks (Claesson, McQuaid, Smith, older prospects like Bigras and O'Gara), and young players that may or may not be ready or may never be (ADA, Pionk, Hajek, Lindgren, Gilmour).

That's not particularly confidence inspiring. I think there's going to be a lot of "throwing this big bunch of crap at the wall and seeing what stinks the least"

This is assuming both ADA and Pionk show that they deserve to be full time NHL players, which neither has done yet.

I mean I guess. But the state we're in now, they should both have a long leash with growing pains.

I'm not convinced on either personally, but I would rather find out seeing them a full year. There isn't much to lose in playing them. They're not 18 - it's not a LA/Chytil situation. It's now or never.
