The timing (pretty much after Traverse) is what really gets me thinking here.

The more I think about it the more I think they really like what they've seen out of Hajek and plan on giving him 3LD, as long as he doesn't fall flat in preseason.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I could totally see it.
That makes it even more confusing. If Hajek makes it, that means 2 of Smith/ADA/Pionk either sit or are in the minors.

I am curious to see how they handle the NHL/Hartford/ECHL defense depth

If they keep 8 D on the NHL roster, that leaves 9 guys fighting for 6 spots in Hartford, and Maine has 7 D signed already

These guys gotta play somewhere

1.) There's no such thing as "minutes that should be going to Pionk or ADA." If they can't beat out Adam McQuaid, they aren't ready to play in the league full-time.
2.) There's nothing stopping Quinn from using McQuaid in some games and using another player in others, depending on how the young guys are doing. Roster deployment is different when you're rebuilding vs when you're trying to compete and it doesn't require having the same lineup game-in, game-out. You can more effectively use a rotation.
3.) Injuries are going to happen
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Injuries are going to happen. I bet that McQuaid will play a lot of games against the shithead teams like the Islanders, Flyers, Caps, etc. and the like, while Pionk and/or ADA will play a lot of other games.

I'm also not as sold as some may be that Smith is ready to go. I'm skeptical until I see improvement on the ice with my own eyes.

Listen, I don't disagree with either of these takes.

But why can't we target someone who isn't terrible?

There isn't a single available player who would be significantly better than McQuaid for the role he will be filling (3RD/7th). I don't even see that being a factor.

I'm not sure how you could disagree with me saying there will be injuries.

If Quinn and Gorton want some muscle in the lineup, I'd much rather it be McQuaid, who can be a serviceable 3rd pair guy, than McLeod.

They'll prob flip him at the deadline. Good protection and competition for DeAngelo and Pionk. Can't gift them spots, they have to earn it.

I do wonder if someone is on the move. Not that acquiring a 6/7 D should be seen as "dominoes..." but that's 8 guys who should all be on the NHL roster this year.

Skjei
Shatty
Staal
Pionk
Smith
DeAngelo
Claesson
McQuaid

He's a negative value add.

I said I didn't disagree. Double negatives. That's my bad.

I'm really flabbergasted by people just ignoring the injuries issue after we just had a season where both of our top 2 D missed significant time.

This is a great get. Good trade for this club. Will return a similar package as Holden at the deadline. Will also allow them to not rush anyone and keep guys like Hajek in the A. Or they're petrified at what they're seeing out of Smith so far.

Either way its a good add for a year where we have to have legitimate NHL bodies. He should add some legitimate grit to the lineup (a guy who can play and fill his role while being able to protect the lineup) and keep locker room spirits high.

Personally I'd doubt it has anything to do with Traverse and performances there, usually these deals have been in the works for a little bit.

For whatever reason the Rangers are stockpiling D to some extent which honestly leads me to believe they're not particularly confident in the players they have. They've got basically 3 actual NHLers (Skjei, Staal, Shattenkirk) and a bunch of guys with question marks (Claesson, McQuaid, Smith, older prospects like Bigras and O'Gara), and young players that may or may not be ready or may never be (ADA, Pionk, Hajek, Lindgren, Gilmour).

That's not particularly confidence inspiring. I think there's going to be a lot of "throwing this big bunch of crap at the wall and seeing what stinks the least"

You're probably right, but it could be that his play at TC was a deciding factor after how he was last season.

I'm probably reading too much into it

Ah, I misread it.

You still care too much (for this season) about the quality of our veteran players.
What I care about are the types of players the FO continues to target. Part of me believes that even when this rebuild is over, whenever that is, they'll continue targeting this type of player.

Listen, I don't disagree with either of these takes.

But why can't we target someone who isn't terrible?

Bottom line is that they want some players who can "protect" the younger players/rest of the roster. I think it's a BS thing, no one really is protected by having a guy like McQuaid or McLeod around, but players seem to like it and coaches and GMs seem to like having someone who can throw hits and rough guys up occasionally. Right or wrong, that's still just hockey at this point in time. Guys who don't suck and also bring those qualities are a lot more expensive (and that's why management seems vaguely excited about Lindgren, who might be able to be a decent player who plays with an edge).

And honestly I do think it makes a team harder to play against if they have some physicality. I know we crap on this idea a lot these days because the NHL definitely has shifted away from the rough stuff as much, but having a team that can play mean and actually *hurt* the other team is not actually a bad idea as long as you're not trying to build that around your top six and top 4 being no skills pugilists. THis is my roundabout way of explaining to myself why coaches and GMs are still infatuated with these kind of players like McQuaid...send him out there to throw some hard hits and rough some guys up, put the other team on their heels a bit. It's not a bad concept, the execution is just...iffy sometimes.

This is why Tkachuk went so high in the draft even now when we know how much the NHL has changed. A guy who is skilled but can also pound the crap out of the other team is still the holy grail for hockey

I'm okay with the deal provided they trade him at the deadline. A 4th is really, really low value if we look at our drafting record.

He may not be great, but he has 462 NHL games under his belt. He's averaged being on Boston's second PK unitn so they'll expect him to do that here.

If DeAngelo or Smith outplay him great.

That makes it even more confusing. If Hajek makes it, that means 2 of Smith/ADA/Pionk either sit or are in the minors.

Hajek is a LD, ADA and Pionk are righties, Smith plays either side...

Basically, there's technically an open spot for Hajek that doesn't impact ADA or Pionk assuming they can beat out Smith

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Staal-ADA
Hajek-Pionk
McQuaid

Though I question whether they'd want to run 2 rookies paired. I still think it's more likely we see someone like Smith or Claesson on the third pairing LD spot and Hajek will start in Hartford.

As long as they're targeting them for 3rd pairing and 4th line duty, I'm fine.
I have little problem playing McQuaid and Mcleod against what I deem the shithead teams. The Islanders in particular are going to be looking for trouble every time the Rangers come up on their calendar.
