Why is Toronto being forced to trade him right now, this very second for a underwhelming return?

Much like the realestate market, During the winter when the market is slow, you wait for the spring/summer and sell in the hot market for a higher price.
except its a f***ing house and not a living person whos NHL career cant extend past 40 while a house can stand for hundreds of years

Maybe he wont be traded for scraps but i think it will be a lesser level Dman from the ones leaf fans are demanding for. But picks would be included as Leafs need as many producing players on elc on their roster in the upcoming yrs.

Something like

Justin Faulk
2nd rnd
3rd rnd

For

Nylander
5th rnd

Nope. This doesn't help the Leafs at all.

All this does is lose us Nylander and replace Gardiner with Faulk next year. And then the year after that Faulk is a UFA.

I like the 'no leverage' some fans are trying to use to make themselves feel better regarding Nylander.
It's absolutely correct he stands to lose a year of money and production if he doesn't sign, but it's not like this kid is hard up. His family is wealthy, he has endorsements and he could always play in another league for more money than most people posting here will make in the next 6+ years. He has leverage.

Both sides are in a really shitty spot. Being perfectly honest, if I was Dubas, I'd trade him versus signing him. When the coach, teammates and everyone else's cousin chimes in with the 'we expect him to sign, he should sign, team first' that bridge won't be easily repaired. Now, I agree, don't take pennies on the dollar; there's no need to trade him for garbage. But if I could get a good cost controlled younger (under 27) player that brings something to put my team over the top... I think you do it.

Nylander will get signed. Will be a Leaf and may end up traded after the season. That's how this plays out and I am 100% sure of it.

And this is why I think it has gone on this long. Willy wants to be a Leaf for a long time, but I don't think Dubas can make it happen with the other upcoming contracts to be signed next year. And I think Nylander realizes this/ trying to work something out/ he doesn't want to be signed and traded.

No I won’t. You are so set on wanting the Leafs to get ripped off on a trade. It is obvious with your posts. No way Dubas has the same mind set as you. He wants the best for the team.

Waiting until the draft is the BEST thing for the Leafs to do if a deal does not get down. Bar none.

I don't want any trade to happen because I don't know if there is a trade that makes both sides happy. I think Leaf fans are underrating Pesce and some of the comments I have read over the past several threads about him are laughably uninformed.

Nylander also doesn't touch Slavin. So what can the plus be to Pesce? Is there a plus? I think the Leafs will need one. So what can we add? Well, Waddell said he won't offer sheet as the pick could easily be top 3. I agree, first rounders are out of the question. So it would have to be either 2nd rounders or prospects.

I can tell you right now Svech and Necas are off the table. They are far too important for the future to move for someone like Nylander.

So who is left? Anyone who Toronto will value enough to consider the add on? I don't know.

I don't know if I see a fit.

Pesce and Nylander is pretty damn close.

I would say Pesce for Nylander is fair. Nylander is not going to get you Slavin. He is not signed, and this process IMO has brought down his value in a trade. I don't see teams rushing out and breaking down the door to sign or trade for him.

I can only say this from a neutral stand point. Pesce is signed to a good contract and he is underrated by some here. Nylander is looking for a contract that the Leafs and him have yet to resolve. To me this evens it out.

Once he's signed, I can't wait for all the basement dwellers to freshen up their Mountain Dews and then start discussing how the Leafs are going to lose Marner/Mathews next year.
It's crazy how much thought, time and energy fans of other teams put into the Leafs. It's kind of sad/pathetic.
Well the Leafs didnt put much time and thought into their own organization for 40+ years so folks are just helping out, yaknow?

I just don't know if he signs because I don't think either side wants to give anymore. Maybe the finality of the issue being near will make someone blink. Someone is gonna have to say uncle.

Ya, I don't see that. The plus would be small, like a 1st( which would be a very late first, in the Leaf's case). If the Leafs threw in Liljegren, then the Wild would have to consider it. They might even have to send a 2nd or 3rd back the other way. It really depends on how Fenton sees Nylander as a player, and how outrageous his demands are for a long term deal.
It goes w/o saying that no deal is done unless a deal is arranged first, or the team receiving him will be in the same boat as TML.

I can't help but feel that Dubas already two deals ready for Nylander to sign, a Bridge and a long term. It is in neither parties best interest to sit out the year.

If a deal is made for a Dman, then Dubas would want someone with a lesser cap hit, or a Dman that is so good that they don't have to worry about re-upping Gardiner( saving a boat load of cash).

I think someone like Spurgeon is a better fit than Dumba( from MN), myself.

WN is UNSIGNED. You could trade Dumba for him and he could hold out on you unless if you pay him 8M. Then what? Im talking about an unsigned WN. Hes worth half of Dumba. Unless if you really want to trade for him and his 60 points on Matthew's wing. Dumba can get 60 this season.

If Toronto needs a top pairing Dman that can move the puck and also plays a great "D" game then Spurgeon is a way better fit than Dumba is. If you want the raw potential of Dumba that lives for offense then Dumba is your guy.
