What did people expect?

Matthews got $13.25 mil.....

I believe last offseason, it was suggested that Nylander wouldn't leave money on the table, if the others didn't.... and Tre paid Matthews, probably more than he should have.

So, it's Nylander's turn... since the start of last year... Nylander has 65 goals, and 86 assists, 151 points. Matthews over the same period has 75 goals and 66 assists, 141 points. How much less should Nylander accept, based on being nearly as good with goals, and better in assists?

If Matthews was in the $12.5 range, we probably get Nylander for $10.5... but nobody wants to leave some money on the table to win... it is what it is.

Honestly, that number feels like what Nylander's agent would have started negotiations with. How in the world can't the GM negotiate it down at all?

I can promise you it was not the number the Nylander camp started with. That's not how negotiations work.

Willy is my favourite out of the 3, but I knows it s only probably $1-1.25 too much per year, but if you do that with 5 players, that’s an extra $5million player, so it does matter, and it also shifts the internal salary cap, and we all know how special Marner thinks he is.

To be honest, out of the Big 4, Matthews and Nylander are my guys and the ones I wouldn’t be happy moving on from due to a cap crunch.

Good news, about time.
Now we can move on to complaining for two years on Marners extension.
Good times.
News flash, your season ticket’s subscription just went up significantly, enjoy the next 8 regular seasons………

Anyone trying to rationalize this as a good deal need to give their heads a shake. This management group is so afraid of possible change that they just cave completely in every negotiation. Nylander makes more than pastrnak, that is comedy gold
The timing of it screams caving too. At this point why not wait until the end of the season? It's Nylander who would have more to lose. That way this keeps him hungry, no one is giving him a better deal on the open market over 7 years.

Friedman doesn't think it's very different, if at all.
He might be right. I listened to what he had to say and he didn't have any compelling evidence for that, though. It was mostly centered around how other people feel about how Lewis Gross negotiates and he doesn't budge from his ask. That's likely very true, but I bet he moves up from his number when his client plays like Willie has. Couple that with multiple people who seem to be on top of this signing saying something completely different in the summer and I'm skeptical. If they come out and say the same thing, sure. I'm inclined to believe. Friedman also said a couple of more things that he just thinks and doesn't have evidence of, it didn't sound like "I know this" but more of "this is what I think about the signing."

Friedman might be 100% right, of course, but he's the only one saying it and multiple reports/tweets/podcasts from the summer suggest otherwise.

It’s January and Nylander is 1 point behind Pastrnak and McDavid in scoring. Somewhere in the top 5 range depending on the day. I’d say this is a new level of stardom for him… this level of scoring race production would be a hit if it was Matthews on his $13.25 million deal.
What's this supposed to mean? Those are far better players than Nylander.

I thought in the summer they did throw around a $11.5 million number but it sounded like crazy talk. The Nylander put up.

I hope Leaf Nation holds him accountable when he doesn’t come close to living up to this supposed contract………….

Many are holding him to the same standard as the double digits when they make 50+% more than he does.

We've seen it for years, the "Core 4", when he's actually the 5th. highest paid player behind Matthews, Tavares, marner and Rielly.

So what would change?

On his UFA contract, if as rumored, he's only getting ~600k more than marner's RFA contract.

Alright Treliving. Time to show if you can do this depth thing better than Dubas. Cheat code core ready to go.
Or in other words better be able to find several needles in many haystacks………

why should he be "held accountable"?. the front office gave him this deal, they, like always..should be the ones that own this.

Ya, I know that. I'm just saying, tongue in cheek, that this is on the unreasonably high end. There should have been no argument for more than this.

I am holding out hope( misplaced for sure) that Nylander reads the room and last minute knocks off 1.5 per year as a belated Christmas present to all long suffering fans

I think some people are fixated on what Nylander used to be in 2020, 2021 than what he’s been doing lately.
And that's illogical how?

As it stands at this very moment he's a career high 87 point player. That was last year, and he's a 27 year old player - smack dab in the middle of his prime. What he's doing now is the anomaly - not the other way around. I like Nylander too but we can be realistic about the player now that he's not underpaid anymore.
