Those rumours of him going to Chicago for $12.5m to play with Bedard made them cave. Shanny is truly f***ing clueless. It is becoming clear and clearer to me. I think it started when he was brainwashed into hiring a galaxy brained stick boy who convinced him they needed more Malgins.

I'm betting Tavares is not coming off the books at all. He'll re-sign for something like $4-5M less, at least some of which will go to Marner's raise.

That'll leave the Leafs with at best $3-4M in freed up cap space and that doesn't include any extensions & raises for existing players like Knies, Woll, Domi? Also, Brodie won't likely be back which frees up cap space but also means his spot on the top pairing has to be filled, and probably for not any less than his current $5M (Lilegren is not that option, at least not yet)

So everyone please get past this notion that once Tavares is gone (and he may not be at all) and the ceiling is raised it's going to be raining cap space in Toronto and all the teams' worries will be taken care of. It's not, not even close.

You take a hard line on Tavares, the number is X and that's that, otherwise thanks for your service but this is Matthews' team now. Ideally they take the same approach with Marner but I'm definitely not holding my breath, they'll give his camp whatever they want again unfortunately.

I doubt it, more likely the board had some serious fomo and didn't want to lose the player after failing to find a trading partner last summer. If Nylander really wanted to join a tank job in Chicago in the prime of his career we should've packed his bags for him, weeds out the pretenders.

I'm surprised they couldn't get it done with most money upfront and come in lower.

Kind of nothing to do with Nylander though as he just plays, his team management handles the business side. Kind of like Keefe doesn't do contracts, but he's certainly supported Nylander in this ride with his comments recently.

I will be pleasantly surprised if he earns it in years 7 and 8.

Maybe all the reports were all wrong, but a couple of the same guys who are (and have been) reporting 11.25+ x 8 years for the last week or so were reporting that he was asking for 10/low-10s back in July.

I like Nylander, but last summer was the time to move him and make fundamental changes to this roster.

I still think this team can win. But I also wouldn't have minded a retool built around the return and cap space moving Willy would have created.

It is not a matter of wanting to go, it is a matter of making Shanny think he is willing to go. You know like the rumors of Matty getting a max OS from Zona or Mitch getting multiple OSs.

Losing Nylander to keep Tavares would have been a huge mistake.

Next year we will be suck with Tavares and Nylander making 11 and 11.5 but the year after Tavares is off the books and things will be fine.

All 3 will be overpaid, but raises covered by Cap increases, and Tavares decrease.

One of them appears to be making a career commitment to the Maple Leafs, while perhaps others are making a commitment to cash in again when the Cap has gone up $10-12mm.
