Worth it IF he maintains the pace he's on this year.

I'd rather have him than Marner.
See Huberdeau, Gaudreau, Tavares, Panarin. It is not likely but possible (JT Miller). Pat Kane had one other big year. Marchand had 3 really solid years. But then you get into guys like Sakic and Selanne who had awesome years in their 30s. Willie has always been healthy so he is a long ways from losing a step. I would be thrilled if he could manage a couple more seasons like this one.

Right now Shanny is just trying to hold onto his job so I don't think he is too concerned with how the deal will age. But he won't deal Marner to mitigate the expenditure on WN. The talking heads suggested Mitch's next will come in around $12.5 so they really need some hard cap growth to build around the top guys.

Anyone trying to rationalize this as a good deal need to give their heads a shake. This management group is so afraid of possible change that they just cave completely in every negotiation. Nylander makes more than pastrnak, that is comedy gold

It’s January and Nylander is 1 point behind Pastrnak and McDavid in scoring. Somewhere in the top 5 range depending on the day. I’d say this is a new level of stardom for him… this level of scoring race production would be a hit if it was Matthews on his $13.25 million deal.

The closest comparable player is 30-goal scorer Panarin with 11.64... A team like the Rangers could offer Willy something like that. The Leafs management group is not the only incompetent in the league. Willy's contract is actually movable (at the moment). The weakest link is Marner who is basically useless in the playoffs. Mentally weak... I'd trade him.

It is not a matter of wanting to go, it is a matter of making Shanny think he is willing to go. You know like the rumors of Matty getting a max OS from Zona or Mitch getting multiple OSs.
I doubt very much some made up scenario is what caused this perceived panicked signing.
He was always going to sign, it's not like this was out of the blue.

It is was it is.....Agents are not dumb....players want what the market dictates.

Take home pay is what agents look at.

But we will hear constant moaning and groaning about overpayment....etc and the Leafs are the only team that does this.

Enjoy the ride.....hopefully Nylander outplays this contract like his last one that had the forum up in arms about overpayment.

Just find it funny that armchair fans know more about how contracts work then agents and GM's

To make you feel better........the Habs will be paying Anderson and Gallagher 12.5 mil for the next 3 yrs or so and they are bums IMHO

I like Nylander, but comparing him to McDavid and Pastrnak half way through one season is a bit of a stretch.

Now twiggy is licking his chops and about to cash in big time

28-35

If it comes in at that amount ...

I'm surprised they couldn't get it done with most money upfront and come in lower.

Kind of nothing to do with Nylander though as he just plays, his team management handles the business side. Kind of like Keefe doesn't do contracts, but he's certainly supported Nylander in this ride with his comments recently.

I will be pleasantly surprised if he earns it in years 7 and 8.

His dad had two of his best NHL seasons at 34-35. Hopefully it's in his genes

i'd argue willy is just a bit better than panarin due to his overall game.

as far as i'm concerned nylander is just 2nd to mcdavid for ice tilt. just controls the game with such laser precision

if mcdavid jumps from edmonton to toronto in 2 years... omg

Honestly, that number feels like what Nylander's agent would have started negotiations with. How in the world can't the GM negotiate it down at all?

I’m not doing anything other than pointing out McDavid, Pastrnak and Nylander each have 55 and 54 points and it’s January 8. Maybe our guy is actually really special?

I always maintained going back to 2016-17. Nylander looks like he could be the most skilled out of Matthews and Marner but his point totals just lag behind.

92/8 = 11.5
92/7= 13.14
No team is giving Willy 13.14 over 7 and full NMC

Unlikely he gets 13.14 from anyone, but are you suggesting he's playing the 8th. year for free in Toronto?

The more accurate calculation should be:

11.5*8 years = 92

X * 7 years = unknown
Y * 1 year = unknown.

Would any team go 12*7 (84), or 12.5*7 *87.5) ?

At age 35 would/could he land a contract for $7 or 8?

I think it is overpay, but he did make a commitment to Toronto.
He didn't give himself an out or option to re-up for more money after 4 years.

They're sunk man haha.

I didn't ever think I'd hate this team after watching them in 2016-2017 but holy cow I'm getting close to crossing that line.
Toronto needs another team ASAP……….

Willy is my favourite out of the 3, but I knows it s only probably $1-1.25 too much per year, but if you do that with 5 players, that’s an extra $5million player, so it does matter, and it also shifts the internal salary cap, and we all know how special Marner thinks he is.
