That doesn’t sound very promising, but Swedes do tend to peak later and age well. I expect Nylander to out-perform Benn in his 30’s.

benn is also more of a big PF, willy is agile winger

PFs fizzle around age 30
agile wingers around 35 or later

so there is risk on the last couple years but i don't think it's a big risk

Wish it was lower but can live with it, will be a steal by year 3. To me, this means Marner is done as a Leaf. Yeah yeah NMC, he will waive it and if not, his 13M is better spent elsewhere. I am not concinved Marner gets much more interest than Gaudreau where a small winger with questionable playoff history might get to choose some undesirable spots on bottom feeders to get his money.

To me, I extend Tavares 3 years @ 4M aav on July 1st. Even if he is a winger for that deal, he will score 60 points easily for us. As long as Treliving is not a complete idiot, we are setup to retool and have a second window pretty well.

And that's illogical how?

As it stands at this very moment he's a career high 87 point player. That was last year, and he's a 27 year old player - smack dab in the middle of his prime. What he's doing now is the anomaly - not the other way around. I like Nylander too but we can be realistic about the player now that he's not underpaid anymore.

I think Nylander traditionally struggled to put up the point totals that accurately reflected his skill level. I don’t think he struggles with it anymore and he seems to enjoy kind of being The Man. I think he’s found a new level.

Not great of course, but no surprise really and out of all the core 4 contracts this is the one I am least disappointed about for a number of reasons:

1. I think Willy is a gamer and is going to be a beast in the Playoffs in the coming years of his contract.
2. He's the only one who committed to 8 years and I feel like there's a good chance he'll retire a Leaf.
3. Ultimately, our mgmt. absolutely blows at contract negotiations going back to the Dubas era where we set our own standards with large pay and short term contracts - that too with RFAs! In turn we created our own internal cap issues with contracts & a culture of over dependence on 4-5 players. If Matthews gets paid 13.25 for 4 years, Willy at 11.5 at 8 years in some ways is a bargain assuming he keeps his current standards of play (I believe he will be more or less as good as he is right now for atleast the next 6 years, after which he may start to drop off a bit)

So lets just enjoy Willy. I think we can play more hardball with JT for sure and assuming Treveling has some balls (so far I'm not seeing it though), we should with Marner as well.

I agree.

Leafs would be my team, but I'd be okay with others moving on.

I often wish we had a Toronto II because the storyline with the Leafs is a little stale after all these years. The playoffs unfold in similarly unsatisfactory style every year.

But I think what we need the most is a low skill, defensive grit grind team that practices ultra fiscal responsibility. Kind of like what Eugene Melnyk sort of envisioned for his era of unparalleled success. I think a lot of people just want to see the opposite thing.

Ya, I know that. I'm just saying, tongue in cheek, that this is on the unreasonably high end. There should have been no argument for more than this.
The reality is that we cannot accurately judge this deal until we see how other comparable players are paid this summer and beyond. This may very well be the first of many contracts like this, in which case it's better to get out ahead of it.

I am holding out hope( misplaced for sure) that Nylander reads the room and last minute knocks off 1.5 per year as a belated Christmas present to all long suffering fans

He's just following team leadership's direction.
It was said he'd base his decision on what others did. If they took a discount he'd take a discount.
Well, except he made a career commitment to the Leafs.

It is like me and you staying close to Usain Bolt for the first 5 meters of a 100-metre race. Pay me!!
If Nylander had a 50-goal (doesn't even need to be 60) season prior to this contract and showed that kind of ability - I wouldn't complain.

Pastrnak was putting up seasons like 95 points in 70 games and 81 in 66, while being a top-5 goal scorer. Here in Toronto we pay our stars for what we hope for them to be.

Avoiding contact all those years will pay off.
hopefully he doesn't revert back to that now that he's fat and happy.

Pastrnak just signed for $11.25, and is a superior player…so there’s that

It's been amazing watching him out it together, a work in progress every year. Last couple, it's finally clicked.

Exactly what we have been hoping for when people talk about internal development to help the team get better.

I feel the media drives the price of our free agents. It's rather annoying.

I'd personally prefer Nylander over Marner, especially come playoff time. However, we all know Marner is not producing to what he's capable of.

I don't see how we resign Marner for less than 12M. In which case, I cannot see this team doing much better in the playoffs. We need a solid 12M defenseman (or two 6M dmen).

Basically all the cost savings on Tavares next deal is gone.

Not a good deal at all, but its probably how much multiple teams where going to offer him come July 1st and he is worth that if he basically plays like he's playing this year. But Willy...not even 11.25 per? LMAO

I'm still thinking Marner's gone because of this.

Love the player but that's an ugly contract.

I want Marner's next contract less and less.

Schief signed this summer for 8.5m with a team that he was rumoured to want out. Look at those huge bonuses. Leafs management is a pushover because they are a cash cow.

Oh and BTW did you know Schief and his Jets are in 1st place and they actually can afford a goalie and depth.

Nylander is better than Schiefle though. Not really a comparable.
