Frank Corrado broke down the tax implications. Nylander is still netting less as a player than Matthew Tkachuk is, even though his cap hit is higher. That in itself is why we are seeing these bloated contracts. Until the NHL addresses this and allows for flexibility in the cap system for this, Canadian teams will always be at a disadvantage.

I don't hate the contract, might age bad. But I rather keep him than lose him for nothing.

Oh the other hand I wonder what the delta is between one young millionaire vs another young millionaire, lifestyle being equal when paying Canadian dollars vs US dollars over the course of a season?

Definitely a high Aav but I love Nylander. He's clutch and from my memory he has performed well in the play offs. If he can keep up his play from this year and even improve on it it's worth every penny.

I'm just a fan though, so it's nice to see one of my favourite players get extended. I'm not going to try to analyze his contract too hard.

Is Frank Corrado a tax accountant? There are loopholes players can use, marketing money in Toronto is higher, they are paid in American dollars. It’s not the anchor people think it is

well 1. Corrado is a former player, he isn't some scrub off the street and he referenced a hockey tax site. That calculates the taxes for NHL players.

another positive is he signed and committed for 8 years. isn't that what fans wanted lol? We wanted a star to commit to us long term.
I'll still maintain that max term isn't exactly going the extra mile once the team has committed to an 11.5M AAV.

I think all NHL players get paid in USD regardless of market, so it's probably very similar lifestyles to be honest.

I always find the logic odd, assuming he won't earn anything in the 8th year.

What if he makes 4M in the 8th year? That means he would only need 12M per to end up with the same, and I'll bet there are several teams willing to pay him 12.
That is what scared Tre and Shanny but at 12x7, he'd need another $8m, in that 8th year to get to 92m.

Wish it was lower but can live with it, will be a steal by year 3. To me, this means Marner is done as a Leaf. Yeah yeah NMC, he will waive it and if not, his 13M is better spent elsewhere. I am not concinved Marner gets much more interest than Gaudreau where a small winger with questionable playoff history might get to choose some undesirable spots on bottom feeders to get his money.

To me, I extend Tavares 3 years @ 4M aav on July 1st. Even if he is a winger for that deal, he will score 60 points easily for us. As long as Treliving is not a complete idiot, we are setup to retool and have a second window pretty well.
The fantasy part of my brain really hopes we can swing a Marner++ for Makar type trade. That's the only type of core re-structuring I'm interested in.

I wouldn't look to a shitty ex player for tax advice.

I cannot believe a network allows a guy like Frank Corrado (???) go on television and comment on the application of tax legislation (including US tax legislation!) that he does not even remotely understand. My goodness.

Age difference at time of contract signing
The age at peak year is one apart. I'm not sure how relevant the one year would be. But Johnny was much more productive at a younger age and then had back to back toilet seasons preceding the breakout year. If you look at just the two years before it seems predictable that the breakout for JG was an anomaly. You can see why the Flames were not throwing big money to extend him early.

Willie has had more of an incremental improvement in a number of areas rather than a crazy jump in something like shooting percentage. Johnny's spike was a 3.58 pp60 with a previous best of 2.85 which is not a sustainable increase. For reference Matthews top 2 are 3.03 and 3.35. Marner's are 3.06 and 3.45 so a deviation of only half of what Johnny saw. Huberdeau's pp60 best were 2.56 and 2.95 so should have been close to a repeatable range.

Willie's pp60 is 2.40 which is actually below his career best of 2.62 from last season. His big bump is in the power play. He is pacing for about 44 ppp this season which would be a best ever number for the big 4. That would not be sustainable from year to year but his current best of 31pts is better than Marner, Matthews or JTs 2nd best so he could remain the clubs best pp producer for the next few years.

I’d trade Nylander for Makar or McAvoy today, but those top pair defenseman scenarios aren’t exactly available.
Yeah that's the issue and one I feel we will have presented to us again when Marner is up for a new contract

I would be fine with trading Mitch, but he's an elite talent and you need a somewhat similar return. Where are you going to find that?

Friedman on Marek said the Nylander camp never budged, this was their number all along and the Leafs basically had to accept it, which they did.
Sounds like the Pastrnak negotiations. He forced them to soften by scoring at a 60 goal pace. I guess it did not take as much for Shanny to budge and throw in an extra $4m.

I don't know why people are complaining about the AAV. He's 27 years old, durable, consistently gets better every season, easily one of our better playoff players, and probably our 2nd best player on the team.

The AAV is fair given where the cap is projected to go, and when JT resigns for less than half of his current AAV this contract will not even be a problem.

Love his commitment to the team for 8 more years. He is built to be a Maple Leaf.

I'm just happy he will retire a Leaf

If he continues to play like he has this season he is worth every penny. When Tavares' contract comes off the books our depth will be just fine. No complaints here. Willy is the real deal.

As much as I LOVE Willy; JT off the books means we will need a 2C how are we gonna afford that and quality depth and defense ???

Marner is already thinking 15 AAV

ROR is making $4.5 million in Nashville and having a near identical season to JT. So if he were to take $5.5 million with the Toronto pushover price he and Nylander as a duo would make less money than they are now. So those would be the goal posts.
But honestly it’s not even that important JT comes back.

Re: Marner. Not sure what happens with him. I suppose the good news is he’s already so overpaid that whatever next deal he wants is going to be a minuscule raise. For reference Matthews got an extra $1.61 million. And he’s Matthews.

You're applying logic to this. And everything that happens in Toronto is the opposite of how it's supposed to happen lol. I agree that Marner should get less of a raise.

But JT will decline. So the question is, is there an equivalent/better player for cheaper/same as JT that comes available.

I guess it depends how much the cap goes up and whether Woll + Jones + Hildeby can be the goal tenders we need. Then it's getting 1-2 good defencemen. Can be done I suppose.

All I can say Willy now the we have given you what . Give us want we want a cup.
You need to play this yr every yr.

JT GOODBYE IN 2 YRS

Marner 11.5 mil anymore and goodbye
