Exactly. This is the point I made during the summer. This is why I actually believe Dubas ironically. I think he wanted to make a change and Shanahan was not on board with that plan

Dubas ran away from Shanahan as fast as he could. He felt an aging Pittsburgh team was a better opportunity for him.

It is incredibly funny how I was gaslight all summer into think Brad was gonna turn this team around. Instead our cap structure is more f***ed than ever, AND we’re a worse team.

Like I’m good with moving on from Dubas, but maybe we shouldn’t have replaced him with a guy who’s teams were equally bad in the playoffs, and left his previous team in a completely f***ed state?

I doubt it, more likely the board had some serious fomo and didn't want to lose the player after failing to find a trading partner last summer. If Nylander really wanted to join a tank job in Chicago in the prime of his career we should've packed his bags for him, weeds out the pretenders.

Cap goes up for every team not just Leafs. Leafs are not gonna be able to compete in the market to get quality pieces

Tavares at 6.5 AAV is also quite a bit

There is also a world when this iteration of the team wins, and every single fan is ecstatic about having all of these guys under contract. Have to let it play out and see what happens. Will they become Tampa Bay...or San Jose?

This too is true... such a dumb move to go to Pittsburgh... if I were in his spot, I would have waited for a better opportunity... Ottawa, Arizona... other better jobs would have opened up... dumb.

I thought Dubas's firing had more to do with how he handled the extension offer and his request for things like board access (basically, more power) than it did withhow he actually did the job.

It’s January and Nylander is 1 point behind Pastrnak and McDavid in scoring. Somewhere in the top 5 range depending on the day. I’d say this is a new level of stardom for him… this level of scoring race production would be a hit if it was Matthews on his $13.25 million deal.

One point behind Pastrnak and Paanarin with a game in hand on each (so a better ppg) and making less of a cap % than either.
