If the Leafs are giving MAX $$$ and MAX term and full no move clause what was the teams risk in waiting until after the playoffs to see if they wanted to invest all this $$$?
The player having a successful playoff performance and opting to sign elsewhere?

So even the 11.25 was low... not a fan of this contract but glad we get to see Nylander play for another almost decade.

Here is the thing. If Willy signed for 10.9 for 8 years lots of people would be saying great contract. Tree gave him 600k more to get him for 8 years. People are comparing it to the Pasta deal but that was signed at a different time.

Tavares is the key next year. If at the end of next year or anytime during the season he signs an extension for 7 million or less then it's a win for the Leafs. That $4 mil in savings pays for Willy's raise.

Now you are looking at Marner and I wouldn't give him more than Nylander. Willy had shown the ability in the last bunch of playoff series to elevate his game vs Marner who shrinks in the playoff. Let Marner walk if he is looking for Matthews' money and take that 11 mil and spread it out to fill the roster.

Time to play hardball with Marner and if you lose him gain the assets from a trade and cap space created by him.

Sounds like the justifications from the last round of signings. How'd that work for the Leafs for the last 6 years?

Really hope Nylander doesn't have a down year next year or he will be crucified by leaf fans and media...

Basically gotta put up 40 goals and 100 points per year for this to seem okay. Let's hope this year wasn't an anomaly

bargain...ish. Yikes. Let's hope he stays the Nylander from this year and not the one from past years where he disappears for 3 or 4 games

Pastrnak signed in March, not like it was years ago. Also, if you don’t think Mitch is getting at least $12.5, prepared to be shocked. This organization is a clown show

Oh the revision, he over played his hand and Shanny dumped him. Now he’s the mastermind h who orchestrated his departure lol.

love the switch up. It’s been clear Shanahan was unwilling to move off the core and that’s an issue. I’m not gonna say Dubas would have made a good trade. But it’s clear he wasn’t going to get the opportunity to make that move if he did stay

And the overpayments continue.

Over the course of the next 8 years, nylander better have 3-4 100 point seasons, 2-3 90 point seasons and a couple ppgish and 70 point seasons at the end

His expectations are no longer just being good, he has to be the best of the best, he better be rivaling pastranak, Marner, panarin year in year out. If he plays bad, he should get as much if not more shit than Marner does, as his expectations should now be as high or higher.

This also sets the stage for marners 13+ ask. Man this f***ing team isn’t winning anything

I am absolutely blown the f*** away

people were discussing 10 AAV in the summer and losing their shit; 11.5 AAV wasn’t even part of the discussion

Just WOW

Honestly, even if JT is off the cap you still need a quality 2C where the F are we gonna find it; while defense and goal tending also needs improvements

I am just lost for words

I am almost convinced that MLSE and Shanny don’t give a flying f*** aa out winning the cup.

They are happy taking in the mollah from ridiculously high priced tickets and booze; and Leafs jersey sales revenues

I bought its “ABOUT THE CUP”

I am just baffled

But I think his change was to get EK. Don’t think that’s a good change

Agreed haha in my latest post I said I wouldn’t have trusted KD to make the move, but how can a GM operate if he can’t even make personnel changes!?

News flash, your season ticket’s subscription just went up significantly, enjoy the next 8 regular seasons………
Why? The Leafs will still be paying out the exact same amount (give or take a few bucks) in player salaries next year.

The players on LTIR are the ones who aren't included in the cap, and are therefore more likely to affect ticket prices.

How much does a 2C cost? I’m confident we can get a 2C for $5million or less.

You know what's better than 3 of the top 10 cap hits in the league? 4 of the top 10 cap hits in the league.

Very on brand for this era of Leafs. Suck in the playoffs, overpay "stars", have no room for depth, repeat
But don’t worry, they “wanted” to play in Toronto
So the overpayments are fine

These guys love playing here cuz they get max dollars and that’s it, they don’t give a shit about anything else

Well at least he signed for 8 years. AAV still sucks.
At least? 8 years is kind of awful at tht caphit. Would have gone 5 or 6. The NMC added for that term and cap is also pretty rich. Willie got full value +.
Oh well...upwards and onwards. Lets win the cup now

Anyone trying to rationalize this as a good deal need to give their heads a shake. This management group is so afraid of possible change that they just cave completely in every negotiation. Nylander makes more than pastrnak, that is comedy gold
If we were gonna give him max term, money, bonuses, and trade clauses, why didn’t we wait till after the playoffs. He wasn’t gonna get more than this unless we won the cup and he won conn smythe, and then at that point I’d pay whatever he wanted.

This wasn’t a negotiation, this was Nylander’s agent asking for something and us saying sure, then him asking for another thing and then saying sure again and again.

also just to point out to people, JT is 25th in league scoring since joining the leafs and willy is 33rd in that same stretch.

people saying that JT is going to take 4 or 5 million are crazy imo.

I agree with you.
It is also something Leafs GM will face. If I let AM, MM and Willie walk, who are available for replacement? Or trade them, who is the key player who is coming back?

I joke around about MM might be trade now due to Willie’s deal but I doubt the GM is willing to trade MM bc the player coming back won’t be as good.

Now if McD or Drai pulls a Tkachuk with the Leafs, that’s another story.
