Confirmed with Link: Nylander signs extension of 8 years - 11.5M AAV

Yeah, particularly since it is very likely that he will still be a near point per game player when his current deal ends. I have no doubt that he will give the team a discount because he won't want to leave Toronto, but there will be a limit to the discount.

The whole, but he makes the least out of them all argument doesn’t hold up anymore. Before he could’ve been put in the bottom 2 with Rielly and the big 3 of JT MM AM. There’s none of that now, he’s one of the big guys in the league too, better smarten up

40+goals 95+ points, year in year out for 5 is needed for this to be only a slight overpayment. His shitty consistency issues better not ever come up again

Yup that’s fair. I knew it as soon as AM34’s contract was announced that it would be a crapshoot show

I also sympathize with Willy as an individual and player but in a team sport, IMO, on a grand scale we are screwed ! unless there is a miracle which given Leafs history is leas probable

I think signing bonuses are supposed to give us and other teams than can give them an advantage. Get your money upfront to invest it right now to make more over the course of the contract.

In the grand scheme of things, doesn’t really matter how you pay the player, spread out or all in one, but it feels like paying more upfront should lead to a tad bit better contract for the team

Which one? Not being sarcastic but there are never a bunch of these guys on the market. Last year having OReilly and Duchene both out there was pretty rare. Colorado had to sign Johansson. If you want someone decent its a sellers market. Look at the top 60 scoring centers. Who's available? I don't think JT will be the only game in town either. They really need to develop someone.

Please take a look at all the contracts that were signed the last few years.

If you were Nylander would you take less when. Players like Cole Caufield make $7.85M
Brady Tkachuk $8.2M
Johnny Gaudreau $9.75M

Even the crappieat player like Pat Laine is making $8.7M

There’s no way in hell Nylander will take less than 11M

As some of have said before Matthews contract is not an issue, nor is Marners, nore is Willy’s even JT’s contract…….on their own it’s having all 4 of them together that is the killer of this teams cup aspirations .

Like I mentioned before.....a lot of teams have bad contracts......alot of them have two players making 5 mil each and are bad

We are so fixated on comparing one player to another. How is Meir's contract working out in Buffalo? Do you think the Habs did wonders with their contracts? Gallagher and Anderson making a combined 12.5 mil contract and basically untouchables to trade as they are bums and play no D

Ottawa has a handful of contracts they wish they could redo or get rid of.....It happens everywhere.

We are just lucky to have 3 of the top players in the game. Enjoy it. :)

He's still a lowly paid Tier 2 guy until after the playoffs end.

The Cap was $80 mil for the 2019/20 season. The big four had a cap hit of $42.12 mil.. or 52% of the cap.

If Marner gets $12 mil, the three combine for a cap hit of $36.75 mil. For 2025/26, the cap is expected to go to $92 million. The same 52% would be $47.84 million... suggesting if Tavares comes in under $11.09 million, we will have allocated LESS to the big four, than we did when everyone received their last contracts. So if we get Marner at $12 mil, and Tavares at $5-7 mil, we will be well below where we were last contract round with these guys.
