Friedman on Marek said the Nylander camp never budged, this was their number all along and the Leafs basically had to accept it, which they did.
He also highlighted that the Nylander camp felt AM34 didn't take a discount, thus they weren't going to

It's tough to blame WN88 for that, but man this culture we've created is so awful. Those first RFA contracts murdered us

Glad we got term. Is their a no movement clause?
Term isn't really a win for the club here. 5 years would have taken him to through his 33 year old season after which he isn't likely to be earning that deal. Full NM.

another positive is he signed and committed for 8 years. isn't that what fans wanted lol? We wanted a star to commit to us long term.
It is nice that at least one of these guys wants to be here. Funny how Nylander was painted as the diva yet by all accounts he handles criticism the best, doesn't pout and he loves to play under pressure. He also clearly loves Toronto and wants to be a Maple Leaf forever. Meanwhile Matthews signs NBA style contracts while Marner will probably want 13 at 6 years or less.

As I said long ago, Treliving's marching orders were "get him signed, period."

There was zero chance MLSE would let Willie walk or trade him unless he demanded it. And knowing this, he had all the leverage.

I cannot believe a network allows a guy like Frank Corrado (???) go on television and comment on the application of tax legislation (including US tax legislation!) that he does not even remotely understand. My goodness.

It was a tweet LOL. Y’all need to chill. And as I’ve posted before Nylander isn’t a resident of the US. So Allan Walsh’s tax bypass doesn’t directly apply. Walsh’s tax bypass applies to those who split time in Canada and the US. Not Sweden and Canada

I don't have a problem with the
In four years he'd be looking for 14, so 11.5x8 is more palatable.
In 4 years he might want 14 but I'd be glad to move on from him at that point. He'd be 32 going on 33 years of age, on the downside at that point of production. So I'd be one what would want 4 years, not 8, but obviously they had to negotiate with him. If you wanted him for 4-5, the AAV would probably have been MUCH higher.

His contract last time was good. The other two were given the moon. Let's see what they do with mitch

The AAV is too high but the 8 year commitment and his ability to keep improving every is well worth the extension. He's been a beast for a long time.

At the end of the day I'd much rather overpay Nylander by 1M or so than to overpay for a 4th line forward.

I see you point but this is the kind of thinking that is not seen amongst cup fav teams.

They always get a deal that works for both the player and the team.

Leafs have been handing out deals that only works for the player

I’d trade Nylander for Makar or McAvoy today, but those top pair defenseman scenarios aren’t exactly available.
Love Nylander but I don't think he can land us those guys.

Marners 2-way game is more attractive if a team is giving up a no.1 D. The dip in team defence is not that significant if Marner is the forward coming back in exchange for your top D

If I was a player I’d 100% care more about making money than winning. The additional money can fund my other hobbies and interests, and an additional few million can go a long way in terms of the number of friends and family I could help, which would mean more to me than anything. In the words of Doc Hudson: “It’s just a stupid cup”

However…as fan…this is absurd.

I think this puts some pretty legit stress on Mitch. We already have a scoring winger that is a top paid player in the NHL. Although he is more well-rounded, he doesn't have the same finishing ability and we don't necessarily need Mitch for offense when we have a Rocket Player + Willy. Should be a decent contract negotiating chip.

I can’t blame Willy for not taking a discount when the other 3 amigos didn’t.
What the hell we have wasted the last 5 years with this awful cap distribution with this core what’s a bunch more. We can always rebuild in another 4-5 years

Yep don't disagree there.

Aav to high and a full nmc is to much . It’s like buying a house without an inspection . Market needs correction again

You know what's better than 3 of the top 10 cap hits in the league? 4 of the top 10 cap hits in the league.

Very on brand for this era of Leafs. Suck in the playoffs, overpay "stars", have no room for depth, repeat
