I hate it, but it is what it is. I guess we'll have to resign ourselves to enjoying a generation of regular season heroes. No Cup, but no draining years of mediocrity or cellar dweller either.

Correct, 2025/26 is where the window reopens. Next season is no chance at a cup, likely to miss playoffs
lol lol lol the hot takes on here make me pee laughing.
likely to miss playoffs next year??? Window opens 2025?
Bertuzzi, Domi, Klinberg, Samsonov all coming off cap. Reeves to the minors.
Cap goes up almost enough to cover Nylander, the others gone give us space to add where needed.
The year after Tavares drops dramatically, more than enough to cover Marner
AND the cap goes up.
wow, here is the thing.

DONT WASTE CAP SPACE
Most teams have a bad contract or two.
We have none, except Reeves who is mostly buriable and Kampf who can be dealt with.
What we need to do is not waste money on the Reeves, Kingberg, Domi, Kampf level players that are no better than replacement level.
Even Beruzzi may be gone for next year, that is ok, play more kids.
Next year Minten can be our number three centre real cheap.
The year after Tavares either re-signs on a good contract or is replaced.
Our real issue is finding steady goaltending, which we tried very rationally with Samsonov, and we need another top four d man.
This team will contend, and make the playoffs every year for years.

yeah even if they make a conference or cup final I probably won't watch because this contract guarantees they won't ever win a cup
yeah, this contract guarantees they won't win a cup this year, eh?????

There is zero chance that happens. None. The idea is absurd.

I suggest either more or less beer. Whatever the current level is, isn’t working.
Maybe not the deadline but his new NMC kicks in July of this year. A lot can happen between now & then including the playoffs & the draft. It’s not an absurd thought especially given the player’s primary thought was about maximizing his earnings. It’s dog eat dog given the way these guys like to negotiate.

So tired of people b*tching about contracts. This is the best collection of home grown talent the Leafs have ever had. Can we just enjoy it?

Let’s face it there are 32 teams now, Bettman probably won’t stop raking in expansion fees until it hits 40. Every new team that comes in drops the chances of any one team winning a Cup. We just saw an expansion team come in and take a Cup away from a longer tenured team. Its the reality of the league now. No matter what Willy or whoever gets paid the odds of the Leafs winning are slim just by virtue of the size of the league and parity. I want a Cup as much as anybody but if it doesn’t happen at least I can appreciate the careers of Matthews and Willy and Mitch and Reilly all these guys we drafted ourselves and are lucky to have. That counts for something too.

What your saying is technically possible but highly doubt but atleast I know where you stand right trade Willy for piccs n prospects right and sign marner for 12.750,000$ Per year?😭

I´m a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, not of player A or B.
This franchise has won nothing in almost 60 years. Our recent PO performance has been piss poor, to put it mildly. We continue to make the same mistakes we have commited in a recent past, when it comes to dishing out huge contracts to players. 4 players being paid over 10M is untenable and severely hinders (proof is in the pudding) our PO chances of sucess.
But hey, lettuce all sing the Kumbaya and hope for the best.

Not picks & prospects but an actual hockey trade, as for Marner you’ve got no control over that at all

This folks is Stockholm Syndrome

If we had a few cup final appearances with superlative performances from the core forwards this would be much easier to handle. As it is it’s too much for too long. If we go on a dynasty run like the late blooming 80’s islanders then it’s all worth it. So I’ll reserve judgement. They have until Matthews contract ends to do something. And we better hope Woll turns into Billy Smith. (And Keefe into Al Arbour …cough)

What a garbage take. Hate the term, hate the AAV, whatever, but this character assassination of Nylander you present here is utter nonsense and not remotely accurate.
Have you watched him his entire career? Last year and this year great,.. he was useless after his last big contract (after he sat at home half the season demanding more money btw) only starts to play well with a new contract on the horizon. Its pretty accurate. Good player but not a team first player and unmotivated without an incentive.

Woll will HAVE TO find a mean streak and be able to HACK opposing players hard on their ankles for him to turn into Billy Smith.

Somewhere, Billy Smith is still whining for me to keep my elbows down and stop trying to play like Gordie Howe !!! Yes, he played on D when playing pick-up hockey.

Lucky you still have use of your eyes lol. That’s pretty cool. He was a battler for sure.

When Tavares signed for 11 m a lot wondered how they'd sign Matthews, Nylander, and Marner and build a contending team. Back then it was expected Matthews would have been the only 10 m player of the three.
Now what? Do they move Marner to shore up the D? Or ride it out?

This mindset is what happens when you put stars before the team. It’s nice to see positives but this is sports and the goal is to win.

A “Participation medal” mindset has spread throughout the team and now fan base like a virus.

Forget the cup, these guys can barely win a round.

Yet they get paid like they have won three cups in a row.

What makes this signing and others acceptable at this money level.
Willie needs 3 , 100 point seasons out of the next 5 years.
We need to win 2 Cups in 5 years, preferably in the next 3 seasons, before AM needs more $$$.
Anything short of that is failure. 4 × $11m players is the standard. Now win.

Haha 2 cups is a lofty task. I think getting one cup is good enough. Just give us one cup, a few conference finals finishes. I don’t think the players understand how low the bar is. If they win one cup they are legends forever. All the salary will be justified. They need to hunker down and get it done for 1 year.

I think most fans Would sett for one

Why would we trade for a dman when we have Benoit?

2 Cups in the next three to five years is not very likely. As they are currently built one or two conference finals would be considered successful. Anything more would be an over achievement.
What they need isn’t available unless they move Marner and even then it’s doubtful.

Why would we trade for a dman when we have Benoit?
That’s a good point. And as long as Hildeby doesn’t play they have a Vezins goalie in the making.

Would have given them more late series experience. That would change things moving forward alone.
We could have faced a Stanley Cup finalist!.... Just like we have in 4 of the last 5 years.
Rounds are pretty arbitrary, especially in this format. We have plenty of experience in long series against top tier teams/performances. Would change nothing.
Why do you think this? Would it not give you more confidence in sticking with this core for long term?
Why would it? Future playoff outcomes aren't dependent on past playoff outcomes. We stick with the core because it benefits us to do so.
We could have faced much easier situations like many other teams and reached the cup final one of these years, but that wouldn't do anything to help the team now, and without the cup, all it is really worth is the extra month of fan entertainment in the moment.
