I'm definitely not a fan of a NMC given for the duration of the deal. Realistically though, what might the trade return look like for a player with an 11.5M AAV contract?
If he plays like this and you need to pull the trigger on him in 3-4 years with the raised cap, I bet it would be a healthy amount of picks and prospects or a solid defender. He's quick and dynamic on the ice, scores a bunch as well.

I understand why Nylander wanted that amount of money

Marner got 10.9M x 6 as an RFA for worse numbers than Nylander the previous season + contract year

From that aspect, why shouldn't Nylander get 11.5M as a UFA pacing for 120 points - more than Marner has ever produced?

However -

WHO THE HELL WAS GOING TO OUTBID US FOR THIS? We just outbid ourselves. No team could give him 8 years. No one was going to give him all the money upfront. No one was going to give him 92M (13.15 x 7)

If you're going to pay him the absolute highest amount of money he's worth, give him the maximum protection, give him the absolute best payout structure and give him the maximum term, which only *you* can offer - why not wait until the end of the season?

Nylander is 27, players with strong skating abilities usually play longer. Not to mention who knows where the cap will be in years 6 to 8. 11.5 million might be a normal salary for a second liner.
i really doubt 11.5 will be normal for a second line player considering 8 players make 11 million or more currently. yes the cap is going up but this isnt the NFL, MLB or NBA. theres no crazy tv deal coming along that can bump the cap enough to make that type of salary the norm in the near future imo

depends on performance, a top 10 scorer im sure the return will be huge, a sub ppg player, probably much less huge lol
As a top ten scorer, he probably wouldn't be getting traded though, right? The AAV (and term?) will potentially serve as its own form of NMC if the team is seriously looking to move him (particularly due to subpar performance).

Why might they move him though if he's playing that well?

so many variables, if this team continues to fail in the POs then theres definitely a path to such a trade, or in 5 years matthews leaves and we want to rebuild etc etc.

I don't know how anyone can look at the 7 years of playoff data, see having over half the cap spent on 4 forwards who regress and play well below the level of their regular season and cap hit peers come playoff time, and be happy with this complete and utter bullshit

at the end of the day, the big ongoing issue is outside of morgan, not one of our "star" players has made one concession in any negotiation, not one single act of capitulation on a single contract. thats a huge problem.

and for all the hard line stances they have taken, what have they delivered? what has it gotten this fanbase in 7 years? one lopsided 5 game series in the second round.

Fair enough. My guess is we'll either win with this group or the next management team in charge may have quite the mess to clean up.

typically how it goes, GMs never think 8 years ahead because nearly no GM lasts that amount of time with a team.

WHAT IN THE ACTUAL SHIT THERE Treliving? WTF? You gave full NMC/NTC and are now throwing spewing philosophical quotes like WTF

Right after being taken to the cleaners for max dollar, max term and full NMC... I guess you're left with counting on the goodwill of Nylander to follow through.

Unfortunately, based on his history as a floater, I wouldn't count on it. It's like 75 to 25 this contract is a disaster.

How? They are all have a NMC. All you can do is wait it out.

Meh we’ve been in far worse predicaments. I’d love to win a cup but winning more than losing during the 6 month regular season isn’t the worse thing that can happen. If the playoffs end early at least the weather will be nice, time to golf, fish and get outdoors.

They might be willing to move in the event of a rebuild.

I did also mention that the situation has the potential to get ugly if things ultimately and unfortunately fail.

No kidding.
If I was a con artist this would be the place I hunted for victims.

Currently if you look at league leaders there's only a select few in the top 40 over the age of 30. Kutcherov 30, panarin 32 are the only ones in the top 20. Crosby at 24th then next player over the age of 33 is in the high 40's .
Like it or not players numbers all drop off once they hit 30. Maybe not a steep decline but certainly off the pace of being paid in the highest echelon.
Decline isnt just about skating either . Its eye sight and how fast it reacts , its just will and drive aren't the same . Hand eye isnt as fast ect.
All that said , it's only a couple years that most likely he won't live up to the contract but by that time who knows, maybe no mathews or marner around either .

Avoids the distraction heading into the playoffs.

Edit to add and I’m sure he was told that was our very best offer, if William didn’t take it we probably trade him

The thing is we're already at the stage of the next GM having a huge mess to clean up. But this dipshit looked at wasn't working and decided to pay even more for it

Although you may very well be right about that, time will tell. This group should certainly have a number of kicks at the can now.

Can somebody please tell me what William Nylander has done to deserve an 11.5M dollar payday, for 8 years with a NTC? Please, anyone?
He had to take the subway, how bad was that? Now he can afford Uber

The cap would have to double for Willie's deal to be second liner money. But none of these deals are expected to age well, look at Benn ffs. Matthews deal is the timeline. One he's done thats $13.5 off the cap and whatever Mitch and Willy are getting is old news. Five playoff runs should be enough chances.

Hey man I usually like your posts but that’s a pretty low bar to accept especially when the 4 Amigo's are paid like world beater yet haven’t won squat.
