Rumor: Nylander like Matthews unextended. Nothing to see here.

If, and this is a big if, the reports are true that Matthews wants to win, and Nylander will take less if the others do, then lock their two agents in a room. They can let us know when they’ve figured it out and Brad can focus on other things.

Seriously, the more you hear about how the NHL operates, the more it sounds like one of those bad movies where the entire thing could have been resolved in five minutes with a phone call.

I'm torn. I love Styles. If he stays and eventually re-signs I'm happy. If he's traded I want a dollar for a dollar. So far I'm a little torn on Brad. Term for Reaves isn't good. Keeping Keefe, I'm not a fan. Free agent signings, pretty decent. Still have to re-sign Matthews. Figure out Styles. Dump Murray. Sign a goalie. No pressure Brad. If you trade Styles I want a quality young defenseman. But sign him. :)
 
New Leaf Tyler Bertuzzi is a big physical net front presence particularly useful on the PP to play the Matt Tkachuk role.

Does that complicate things further with Nylander and his next deal?

If Bertuzzi takes Nylander's spot on PP #1 bumping Willy to the 2nd unit, his points could drop and as such Leafs wanting to pay him less and tick him off further.

This is a potential concern from both sides POV.

I'm still a proponent of evenly splitting the PP units. Matthews/Tavares, Marner/Nylander, Rielly/Klingberg, Bertuzzi/Domi, x/x (Knies?, Jarnkrok or Lafferty?). I believe there's enough to work with.

Interesting spot to be in. Our defense looks pretty bad, and Willy could probably get you something nice. However, I'm honestly shocked people think the team gets better replacing a 40 goal winger at under $7M with a dman. People are going to be in for a rude awakening when JT puts up like 25 even strength points. If he doesn't get his pp cookies then we're going to be in real big trouble.

I don't think he's looking at it as a comparable per say. I think he's saying. "I just put up 40 goals and im leading the team in playoff goals over the past 3 seasons. If I'm going to be on ANOTHER discount contract I want to know that at the least Auston Matthews (and hopefully Marner) aren't going to be using the money I'm leaving on the table to cash in on yet another mega payday.

I don’t understand all the overly dramatic hand wringing about Reaves’ contract.

It’s $1.3M - - that’s barely above minimum salary. And it’s only THREE (3) years. Not exactly a crippling boat anchor like the deals Dumbass used to hand out.

People like to bitch for any reason, Keefe and Shanny sure like it, I haven't heard on negative thing about Keefe or Shanny since the signing, the bet way to get someone's attention off one problem, is to give them something else to bitch about.
 
This is how it goes

1) They split the difference , case close

2) This goes on for a long time, both sides get bitchy.
  • This stretches out past October
  • Brad asks Willie to sign and trade, Willie knows if he does this he gives up his leverage point as the Leafs wont get as much in a trade
  • Brad either trades Willie with one year remaining, getting feathers for a return or Willie caves, which I doubt he will or he agrees to a sign and trade..

It's not more about team comparables, and team comparables and league comparables are the same thing anyway, because team comparables are based on league comparables.
Matthews is worth what he's asking, and nothing about any of this speaks to a "terrible culture", at least for the team itself. It's speaks to a fanbase that doesn't understand contract valuation or the quality of players they have, and media that's all too happy to throw garbage at the wall and insert toxicity into the market to put money in their pockets.
